Gardening: Plants, Flowers, Veggies, Trees and All Things Green

Rather than repreatedly buy mint for a mint tea (which is nice anyway and great for a bad stomach), I grow it - and it grows really quickly too.

My wife got me this cool little thing where you can make plant starter cups out of newspaper. They are completely biodegradable like a peat pot. I made and planted about 150 sunflowers for our farmstand. What we don’t sell we will plant at the farm and at our house.

Peat pots can get expensive and my mom is an old school newspaper reader so I just take her newspaper recycling once in a while…

Good luck keeping those plants warm! This can be such a tricky time of the year.

Oh man. How cold will it be? If it’s right around freezing, they may be ok…

Question - I see the fans, but how do you keep the plants from getting leggy in a greenhouse?

They are such beautiful plants - so large!

Thank god/goddess the forecast changed from mid 30's F to 40F. They're staying in the GH, I'll add another thermal blanket over the doorway and light a Crisco candle heater.

The rotating fan helps to strengthen the stems, move pollen, and keep any water from staying on leaves for long. The upper fan helps regulate humidity and lower day time temps. As for the leggy part- as much direct sunshine as possible. Which means as the trees gain foliage, I'll move the pots outside during the daytime hours, chasing after it and move them back indoors at night for warmth.

Thank you! ☺️. Those tomatoes were all started on Feb 20th.

Wow - that’s a ton of work to bring in and out. We do the same but with trays of peat pots.

Bring ‘em out during the day. During the night I either cover them or bring them back inside.

But it’s a labor of love - those plants look great! I’m planting some little tomato seedlings this coming week.

Been a beautiful, busy morning of moving plants and up-potting.
Sounds like my kinda day.

Will you plant those outside eventually? Or staying in the greenhouse?

I should have moved my pumpkins inside yesterday. They are warm weather plants and I need them to be ready for the 4H fair in late august. 125 day growing cycle.

Everything else is growing well. Getting ready for our farm stand, with sunflower, lettuce, tomato and marigold seedlings.
