GeeBee Tech Support thread - pose questions, get answers

I'm disgusted that a new battery for a 4-year-old laptop costs $150. I should have decreased the brightness on the laptop when I bought it. Dammit.

Because M$ did a deal with the big manufacturers, primarily IBM back in the day.

PC manufacturers aren't locked into MSFT and haven't been since the Justice Department fined the co about a decade ago. Hell, android has made more of a headway in laptops than linux or its variants have.

Android is a Linux variant.

All I asked for was another program that opens Word/Office documents without scrambling the layout.
The gb gave me nuthin'.
So good luck with this thread.

Ubuntu is not popular. Period.

Ubuntu isn't popular because it requires a level of computer knowledge that most people don't have and isn't the standard OS. I had it on a laptop for a while and enjoyed it until it started pushing the boundaries of my computer knowledge. I think it was trying to get a movie program to function that I got stumped. I tried everything the forums suggested and couldn't get it working so went back to Windows.

Neither is the London Philharmonic when compared to Justin Bieber.

I doubt many people view Bieber as an alternative to the Philharmonic.

Just as many people don't view Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows.

Ultimately, the point is that PC manufacturers are not locked into MSFT and, yet, they still don't view Ubuntu worthwhile to package. This despite the fact that they would generate more profit per PC if they did.

Don't hate me because I have a 64.

Hate me because I am the center of the time universe.

Excellent timing for me.

I want to secure a D-link and/or Linksys wi-fi connection. Default gateway is 192.168.0.1 which is the default IP for a D-link router (which is wired only) but when I log in to the D-link router I can't find an option for encryption, SSID or suchlike. D-link firmware version: 1.4, 29 Jul 2005.

My wi-fi signal is provided by a Linksys wireless access point plugged into the D-link router. Linksys WAP model # WAP54G ver. 3.1. I have no idea how I might log in to the WAP. I can't find a separate IP for it. Maybe there isn't one.

Any help would be appreciated.

Linksys says the default IP for the WAP54G is 192.168.1.245

Thanks.

None of my wi-fi devices will load a page for that IP, which is weird because I'm positive that they're connected to the WAP. Right now that's my only network connection. The connection shows up with the name "linksys".

The WAP is connected to the router via ethernet?

Also, a wired router won't have encryption or need an SSID as the only way to connect to it is via ethernet cable. Those features, however, should be available on your Linksys WAP as it is wireless.
