My New Setup

  • Mini PC - only app on it is Plex Media Server
  • Western Digital - 8TB External for media (Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos)
  • Nvidia Sheild - Apps like Plex, Hulu, Netflix, NFL, Amazon Video, etc.
  • HD Outdoor Antenna - Free HD Local Channels
  • HDHomrun - Live TV and DVR <--- Freakin' awesome

All controlled by:
  • Google Home
  • Alexa
  • Samsung SmartThings
  • Harmony Hub

All lights and outlets in the house are "smart" switches and bulbs.

Probably how I accidentally won a bid on a honker of a laptop some years ago.

The evening BEFORE a holiday especially a Major Holiday (when the biding will end during the Holidays.) make a bid! There is a good chance that the other people will forget about it in the rush to do whatever they are going to do!

Bought a Samsung s8+ recently and cannot for the life of me get gmail to display app badges showing me number of unread emails. Other apps(messages, tumblr, samsumg health, etc) have been displaying them.

Any suggestions?

Are you using Gmail, the built-in app? You should be able to long press the app icon to get into the properties.

Yup, built in gmail app and not the Samsung email app. I can get into app info with a long hold. It says notifications are allowed but no place do I see a badges option. Screenshot attached

Huh.

Get into Settings and then search "hide notification dots"

I didn't see a "badges" settings.
 
That didn't work. I'll keep fiddling around with it and see if I can figure it out. Upon further reading, I may have to download a third party app. :rolleyes:

You probably need a 3rd party launcher like Nova or ADW. I use ADW and love it.

Just a side note.

Your mom's panties that have a thicker than normal discharge after Monday, Wednesday and Friday and some Sunday's.... well, you are welcome. Do you charge kowboi more for those after you are done with them?
 
I live in an apartment building where every apartment has its own cable modem and, of course, a wireless router, and a minimum of half-dozen wireless devices chattering away.

I’m surprised I don’t sprout a brain tumor just walking down the hallway.

Anyway, as you might expect, the interference is a nightmare. Does anyone have wireless hardware to recommend in such a situation?

Is my only resort using Netstumbler (yes, I’m dated) to monitor which channel is most free of interference on any particular day? Do mesh devices actually make a difference? Should I just get a WiFi antenna designed for outdoor use and hook it up to a Raspberry Pi configured as a router?

Has anyone invented Faraday Cage wallpaper yet?

If your computer is a desktop, what about a powerline adapter from the router to the outlet you've plugged the desktop into? If a laptop, my office recently deployed a google mesh system that's wicked fast. Lots of other SSIDs on the floor too and still wicked fast. YMMV.

My new apartment will be Alexa enabled; I'm tentatively planning on getting a 2nd gen Echo Plus. Do you have any worries about Amazon listening in on your conversations without being asked?

I've given up the privacy angle long ago and enjoy the shit out of my connected devices. I now have 3 Alexa enabled devices and 8 Google ones. Android and Apple Auto in the new ride too.

There was a long article about that in Wired magazine a few months back.

Evidently there's a "short" voice recorder (less than 10 seconds) that listens constantly for the trigger word "Alexa" and once it hears the word, it immediately fires up the "regular" voice processor that interprets and processes commands.
