Get a tattoo.......trust me on that.

I knew someone that had her husbands name on her leg, just at about the hip in a little cursivey number..they were getting divored so she decided to cover it up....with a knee to stomach dragon. the tail started at her knee and went up her leg and hip with it's head on her oblique. it was awsome work, I never got to see it finished, but it looked incredibly beautiful

Names are a bit naive. My ex had another girls name on his wrist when I met him, I paid for him to get it covered. Then the idiot went and had my name tattooed on his upper arm.
But to get something covered with something far better and more beautiful is very liberating. One of the most stunning I have seen is a wreath of flowers going from shoulder to hip over a mastectomy scar.
Out of the ashes???

I have a few tatts that I got when I was much younger. I now regret them all, but not too much as they are easily concealable. It's kind of embarrassing when I'm at the gym or wearing a tank-top/wife-beater and people can see them. Tattoos don't exactly reek of class.

Tattoos don't exactly reek of class.

I disagree with that. I think tattoos can look very classy, provided that the artyist does competent job and the design you choose isn't too gaudy.

Exactly -- I was going to say the same thing. My tattoos are works of art, on my body. I think only closed mindedness makes that perception any kind of reality. Now, say a confederate flag on someones breasts, that might not be a great idea. But there are a lot of beautiful designs out there, including the full body ones done in Japan.

We'll have to disagree as to the class or classlessness of tattoos. My issue isn't with the artistry of the tattoos, but rather with the idea of having something drawn on your arms when you're a 19 year old punk in the army and having it still be there when you're a 35 year old with a career and a kid in high school.

I have 7 tattoos on my arm. All of them designed by me. I even designed an Alvin the Chipmunk that the kids that see me love. Class is not what you look like but what you act like.

And a comment like this on what is obviously a pro-tattoo thread is classy?

I purposly waited to get my tattoo's until I was older, near 30's, an established business owner, hopeful parent...in other words, at a time in my life where I knew the choices I made would not be ones I would regret.

Therein lies the trials of youth. i was well into my 20's and had a clear idea of what I wanted.
If you are so unhappy with them, get them lasered off, it takes time and $.
Or commemorate a high point, like a childs graduation, or change in life, to cover them with an image that you want to sybolise yourself...
.I fear for young folk caught in the coolness of tats who cover themselves in images that are cool now but in 20years.. people wont remember the bands name or logo or violent images. people change, life is not static, ink is permanent. Tho in europe the are now using vegetable dyes that fade over a period of years...Turn something negative into positive.

Once they perfect lasers which can safely and effectively remove tattoos from dark skin, I shall do just that. For the time being, my tattoos--which cover my upper arms and shoulders-- aren't so obtrusive that they cannot be concealed with a shirt.

This is a Chinese character design meaning "slave". I think it's a nice ownership tattoo. My SO has it just above the crack of her ass on her sacrum.

If anyone wants the outline of it I also have that available too - much easier for the tattooist that way. ;)

That is great....definately a symbol of taking back control and moving forward.

Jeesh. Now everyone here has me wanting a tattoo even more. My problem was that I never knew of anything I felt strongly towards enough to get a tatoo. My sis has one or two, I know she has one on her ankle. I think now if I get one it will be very personal and meaningful, as they all should be. For the longest time I thought about gettinga cross, but my cross is permanently etched into my heart and I don't need ink to show it.

However, I'm now thinking about getting a nice design of a phoenix rising from the cross. The meaning to me would be that ultimately I died. In many ways that is true. Emotionally, physically, spritually, I've gone through Hell in my life, and parts of me have died in many ways. Out of the pain and suffering of those trials and tribulations I have rose to become a great person. Despite all the shit in my life, I choose to be a good person. It's my nature. I have God to thank for that in many, many ways. I would love to have a permanent image to show my eternal thanks to God, as well as the beautiful creature that rose from the ashes.

I'm just not sure where I would have the image placed. Also, if anyone can think of a site where I might be able to see a similar image to work with, or if any artists here could draw me an image of the design, I would be very thankful.

What I'm thinking is simply a nice decorative cross, nothing too fancy, with the pheonix wings exteding from the "arms" of the cross, the head of the pheonix fromthe top of the cross, and it's tail spanning out from the bottom of the cross. Just my idea. :)

Thanks for this thread, it's a great support to see both sides, those who liked it done, and those who do have some regrets. Seeing both sides really helps me make an informed decision.

i have 6 tats, and i loved getting them done, with the exception of one. i've got a lily armband around my right upper arm, rose armband around my upper left, a yellow smileyface (symbolizing the band nirvana whom ive loved for lets see.. 14 years now), a small pair of ugly birds (my first tat and a home job by a friend of a friend. still..no regrets. ill have it fixed up someday). i also have a wrist tat of a heart design, and on my lower back i have a large tribal design with blue lilies. that was the one that gave me trouble. all my other ones (all done at a kickass place here in sf) were relatively easy. i enjoy the pain..i'm not one who likes to talk much when i'm getting tatted, i like to relax and close my eyes and feel it. but my lower back tat...they always say the outline hurts more than the filling in, and in this case it was true. after 45 minutes i was in a cold sweat, feeling lightheaded and queasy. ive never reacted to a tat like that. i finally had to ask her to stop, which i fucking hated. she was understanding tho. she'd done half the outline. so when i went back for the next sitting, i was dreading it, cuz the outline wasnt done...but it was so strange, the second time, i was fine. just like any normal tat. i sat for two hours that time, and then two more hours another day for filling the rest in and doing the flowers. i love all my tats, regret none of them. i plan to have my wrist tat added to soon, color in the heart, add a halo and a pair of angel wings around it, and then on the inside of my wrist, write "angel" in old english. the name angel has meaning for me..its what He called me, and its what He made me feel like. i dont ever want to forget that feeling.

This isn't abnormal...sometimes if you haven't gotten enough rest, or not eaten in the couple hours before the tattoo, or generally not feeling well (even if you don't realize it yet, your body does), your body will reject the tattooing process. I've had it happen too, during one of the 5 sittings of my backpiece. We ended up stopping early because I was bleeding a lot, which is very odd for me, and I was just feeling sweaty and sick.

Next sitting was just fine.

I've got two myself...and it's definitely an addicting experience.
We were in a local parlor the other night, my friend was getting his eighth...

And I was talking to one of the artists about how it was indeed addicting, and she jokingly said to me "Must be all the opium we put in the ink!" :D

I have three now, and love them all. The last one I got was a triskle of ravens. :) I want to get more ... but can't yet. :)

I'll be getting my one and only tattoo this summer. It is actually going to be an ownership mark that Master drew up. We've been talking about this for a few weeks now and are both very excited about it.

I have also been given permission to use a picture of it afterwards as my avatar from now on.

A new girl that I'm seeing now has a fantastic tattoo just above her bum. Don't have a picture of it though (yet), but it is hellacool.

And it is of what??

I just made an appt for May 3rd to get something added to my ownership mark. It will be our 2 year anniversary *smiles*

And it is of what??

Hard to explain. It's a red heart with a grey and black frilly design around it and underneath. Her initials are on the heart as well. Looks absolutely fantastic just above her ass.

Really gotta get a pic of it as soon as I can. :)
