Gettin' ready for NFL '09!!!

But .... why aren't you in the pool?????????

...cause I just read the news about Favre and haven't been keeping up with the thread and I don't follow preseason and alright alright I'll read up on it in a bit and make a bunch of random guesses based on what helmets I like.

Hmmm... I wonder how/if this is going to affect the Steelers' early games:

Big Ben hurt in last practice of Steelers camp
Updated: August 20, 2009, 6:24 PM EDT

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger injured his right ankle or foot during the last half-hour of the team's final training camp practice. It was not immediately certain how badly he was hurt or how long he would be out.

Roethlisberger had an ice pack on the back of the ankle when he was carted off at the end of Thursday's workout, with offensive coordinator Bruce Arians accompanying him. Roethlisberger didn't talk to reporters, but he could be overheard saying, "Oh it just feels great. It feels like a car ran over it."

Coach Mike Tomlin declined to talk to reporters. Team spokesman Dave Lockett said only, "Someone stepped on his foot, and we don't have any updates other than that."

As the Steelers' starting offense practiced against the starting defense, left tackle Max Starks couldn't handle a rush from linebacker James Harrison, the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Starks went down to one knee as he tripped Roethlisberger, who stayed on the turf for about 5 minutes.

After being treated by athletic trainer John Norwig, Roethlisberger spent the rest of practice sitting on a cooler, then left the field on a golf cart, a towel draped over his head.

More in the story linked through the headline.

Oh, ambiguity. On the one hand, I'd like Rongrastname to have a good season and put all the bullshit about the rape accusation behind him; on the other, he is a Steeler.

Soooo... after almost a third of the games for this week (5 of 16) are decided, the standings are:

4 - WD, YK
3 - DD, MS, SW
2 - D2, ES

11 games to go; it's still anyone's week!

Damn. Beginner's luck, anyone?

15 of 16 games played:

WD - 11
SW - 10
DD, YK - 9
D2, ES, MS - 6

WD and I have the same pick for MNF, so he's got the win for the week.

DD and YK have an opposite pick from mine for MNF, so they could tie me for second.

Congrats to WD for the weekly win, and congrats to everyone for getting in and actually doing so well on pre-season picks, which are notoriously hard to get right because teams do so many different things in the first three pre-season games that don't always indicate how they'll play in the regular season.

Yay! That was fun!

SirWhatshisface came in 2nd, with 11.
DiscusDave and Yasashii Kaze had 9 each.
MisterSir had 7, and Daddy2 and ecstaticsub 6 each.

WTG, WD!

So... 3 games last night.

DiscusDave - 3 for 3
SirWhosis - 2
ecstaticsub, WriterDom - 1
Yasashii Kaze - 3 misses.

Nice to see that Atlanta won. I recorded it but it cut off with Atlanta driving.

With one Sunday game and MNF left, some surprising results thus far:

DiscusDave and SirHuhWhat? - 9
ecstaticsub - 8
Yasashii Kaze - 7
WriterDom - 4 (What happened, WD? Did you accidentally list your projected *losers* for the week, or what?)
Too many possibilities to exactly figure them out, but I *think* at this point, the week could be won by DD, SW or YK. I *think* ES is out of the running because she has the same picks as DD for the last two games. We'll see what happens.

It was a great finish. 3rd and goal from around the 2, Redman drops back, scrambles to his left, runs/gets tackled out of bounds for a loss of 4, 14 seconds left. Redman drops back, SD blitzes, Redman scrambles, finds Weems crossing in the endzone with a step on the defender... TOUCHDOWN, FALCONS!

My strategy the first week was to load heavy with home games. It didn't work at all this week. Preseason doesn't count anyway. :)

That's true about PS counting, and yeah, a lot of home games is often a good pick for preseason. :)
