Gi Joe Down Time Reloaded (Closed)

Heavy looked nervously around. To be honest, he had lost track of whose plate was whose, but then he remembered that Sam was in the fight with Connelly and didn't get her food yet, so he was saved from that fight with the redhead who then looked at me and asked if I would be so kind as to get another tray for Sam and take it to her in the Doc's office. "Sure" I replied, then remembered that I didn't get a chance to eat either and neither did Scarlett and both of our plates were empty and stacked beside him.

Back in Doc's office Snake signed, "I will stay with you until you are healed up or I get called for another mission. I don't know when that'll be but until then I'll stick with you." It was a rather generous saying, but it was hard to tell what he was meaning behind his mask. It was impossible to know if he was even smiling or crying behind that mask of his.

Seeing Heavy's hesitant answer, Scarlett turned to Lennox. "Sam hasn't eaten yet and with that broken arm, it is rather important she eat. Could you be so kind as to get her some food?" She asked. Smiling at him as she fluttered her lashes a bit.
"Sure." She watched Lennox gather up some toast with grape jelly, the western for Sam, and some bacon with a thermos of coffee. She felt a little jealous that Sam was going to be getting spoiled with this and could imagine being served similarly but in bed.

"Youre suppose to get sent out today. Breaker and I got a notice of this morning it just didn't say when. Just to be ready to roll out when called." I sighed. Wiping my eyes and cheeks with the only hand I could use. Don't get me wrong. Being alone with Snake in his room could mean a lot of things. But those things would have to stay in my head till I wasn't so fragile. For now it just meant I was someplace safe and Snake wouldn't have to worry over me. That was good enough I guess. Besides, if I was lucky, the green tea would ease me to sleep and I would sleep until he returned.

Snake nodded and wanted to go and get the tea, but didn't want to leave Sam alone in Doc's room. Even though she would be safe she didn't like the doctors and being alone would frighten her, but the situation changed when I entered the room with her tray of food and the thermos of coffee and the room began to fill up with the aroma of good food that Doc even turned around to see this and there was a bit of jealousy because he had never been served food in his room, he had to go all the way to the chow hall to go get it.

"Hi" I said to Sam as I approached and looked at the black mask and gray visor of Snake and trembled a moment before putting the tray on one of the tables beside her and then the thermos. "Scarlett said for me to bring you some food, because you didn't get the chance to eat. This is the Western with some coffee and I picked up some powdered cream and sugar," placing the packets on the plate.

A heavenly smell wafted to my nose and I smiled when Lennox had entered with food and coffee. Scarlett had made him bring me breakfast since I hadn't gotten to eat. "Wow! It smells wonderful, thank you!" I said. Watching as he set it all beside me on the stand. I could see that Doc was jealous but I brushed it off for now. "And tell Scarlett I said thank you as well, Lennox." She really was an amazing friend. I now had a helpful way to pass some time as we waited on the cast to finish drying on my arm, which I was starting to have an itch on.

"Don't scratch your skin" Doc warned her, "We'll give you a pole that will help put lotion on your skin to stop that and don't get it wet." It would be another an hour or so before the plaster dried, plenty of time for her to finish off her breakfast. "You're going to be in that cast for six weeks or so," he said, "maybe more. You fracture wasn't a compound, so that's good, but you're going to need some physical therapy when we get that cast off." He shrugged his shoulders and though he didn't want to tell her how long she was going to be out of action he had to in the end, "I think you'll be out for at least two months. At least, Sam. I'm sorry."

Rip and Duke were waiting out in the hallway when I caught up with them. They looked at me with a curious raised eyebrow, "I took some breakfast over to Sam in Doc's office."

"How's she doing?" Rip asked with concern.

I sighed and said, "Her arm is in a cast. I believe it's broken. Snake is with her right now."

Clenching his teeth together Rip growled and turned away.

"Don't scratch your skin!" Doc warned as I glared a little. As if such a thing wasn't already obvious to me. "We'll give you a pole that will help put lotion on your skin to stop that and don't get it wet."
"Thank you Doctor Obvious." I grumbled. It would be another an hour or so before the plaster dried, which I guess was plenty of time for me to finish off my breakfast.
"You're going to be in that cast for six weeks or so," He said. My jaw dropped. "Maybe more. You fracture wasn't a compound, so that's good, but you're going to need some physical therapy when we get that cast off." I groaned as he shrugged his shoulders. This was horrible! Taking a bite of my food, I watched Doc carefully and could see that there was something he obviously didn't want to tell me.
"How long will she be out Doc?" Lennox asked. I dreaded the answer. Especially since Doc suddenly looked like he wished he had something to hide behind.
"I think she'll be out for at least two months. At least." My eyes widened. What? What?!? "I'm sorry, Sam."
"WHAT?!" I shouted as Lennox left the room.

Rip and Duke were waiting out in the hallway when Lennox caught up with them. They looked at him with a curious raised eyebrow. They had heard Sam's suddenly yell. "I took some breakfast over to Sam in Doc's office." Lennox answered a little shyly.
"How's she doing?" Rip asked with concern.
"And what is she yelling about?" Duke asked. Lennox sighed.
"Her arm is in a cast. I believe it's broken. Snake is with her right now, though. And she was just told that she is going to be out of commission for two months. At least. Sorry guys." Clenching his teeth together Rip growled and turned away.
"Damn! Breaker and Sam are our best and now we're one short." Duke growled. Following after Rip, who undoubtedly was going to tell Scarlett and the team they were going to be short a member for two months at most.

Duke groaned as he touched his forehead and then turned away as Rip came over to me, arms crossed. "Snake is with her, right?" he asked in a low tone.

"Yes" I nodded.

"Good. Good" Rip went on then wiped his lips with the back of his hand. "Scarlett, Sam, and all of us are on the same team. Sam had been training for a mission and now this is going to put her out of it."

"Yes, but not forever" I replied.

"No" Rip went on, "But, you see, bro, we've been preparing this one for at least three months and Sam has been there the whole way and now that she's out and we're one short we're going to have to take on a new person to fill her role, someone that has not enough training or gone through the drills with us."

Snake heard what Doc said, but it was only a rough estimate. He had been through a lot worse and that did not stop him, however, Snake was a rouge of the Joes whereas Sam was not. She was tough but she knew that when Hawk said she was benched, she would do it, albeit reluctantly but as he stood beside her bed he wanted her to know that he'll be there.

Duke groaned as he touched his forehead and then turned away. Rip came over to Lennox, arms crossed. "Snake is with her, right?" He asked in a low tone.
"Yes."
"Good. Good." Rip went on then wiped his lips with the back of his hand.
"Why are you two stressing over this so much."
"Scarlett, Sam, and all of us are on the same team. Sam had been training for a mission and now this is going to put her out of it."
"Yes, but not forever." Lennox said, still not understanding why this was a big deal.
"No, not forever," Rip went on, "But, you see, bro, we've been preparing this one for at least three months and Sam has been there the whole way."
"Now that she's out, we're one short and we're going to have to take on a new person to fill her role."
"Someone that has not enough training or gone through the drills with us." Both eyes landed on Lennox.
"Sorry, dude. It's short notice but you're taking Sam's place."
"We better go tell the others."
"And Hawk." Rip and Duke nodded.

Defeat. That's what I felt in this moment. Three months of training, drills, and hacking various simulated systems....And now I couldn't work on this mission with the others. Someone would have to take my place or they would go on without me. There was no choice either way. It had to be done. What bothered me more was that the person who could take my place....had the possibility of replacing me in my little circle of friends. I didn't want to be replaced. I didn't want to loose my friends to someone else. A hand rested on my shoulder and I looked over. Snake. I wished I knew what he thinking or feeling. But I knew this gesture and from the way he squeezed my shoulder, I had an idea of what he was relaying. "No way. They need you on this Snake. After three months, the team can't offered to be down by two. It's bad enough they're down by one." I said. Reaching up to take his hand. I appreciated the sentiment, but I knew where he would be needed most.

"What? Me?" I gasped, "I just got here!" But there was no reasoning with those two as they left me in the hall with a sagging pit in my stomach and jaw slacked. I didn't know anything about this 'mission' I didn't even get breakfast and now they were expecting me to go fight. "Welcome to the Army" I thought as I scratched my head.

Duke and Rip went right to Hawk's office, knocked on the door firmly. "Enter" was the voice on the other side. The two marched into the office, stood six inches away from the solid oak desk and smartly saluted and Hawk, sitting behind his desk with his eyes on his paper saluted without getting up and asked, "What's going on, Duke?"

"Sir, about Sam..." but Hawk held up a hand to silence them. "I know all about it, Duke. I'm going to have Connelly court martialled for this, but i'm afraid fact is fact, Sam is going to be benched and we need to get another person to fill the role."

Back inside Doc's office, Snake gave her hand a reassuring squeeze as she polished off the rest of her meal and then he took her tray and put it over by the door and came right back. He couldn't leave the room, not even for a moment to get rid of this tray, maybe Lennox would come back and take it. Coming back to the bed he signed, "When your cast dries, i'll take you back to your room and give you my tea so you can rest there."

"What? Me?!" Lennox gasped. Staring with disbelief. "I just got here!" He tried to reason. But there was no reasoning with those two as they left him in the hall with a sagging pit in his stomach. His jaw slacked in shock. Duke and Rip went right to Hawk's office. Knocking on the door firmly.
"Enter!" Came a commanding voice on the other side. The two marched into the office, stood six inches away from the solid oak desk, and smartly saluted. Hawk, who sat behind his desk with his eyes on his paper, saluted without getting up. "What's going on, Duke?"
"Sir, about Sam-" Hawk held up a hand to silence them.
"I know all about it, Duke. I'm going to have Connelly court martialled for this, but I'm afraid fact is fact. Sam is going to be benched and we need to get another person to fill the role." There was no room argument here.
"That's just it, sir."
"We think Lennox should take her place, sir."

Snake gave my hand a reassuring squeeze as I polished off the rest of my meal. He took my tray and put it over by the door then came right back. I could tell he couldn't bear to be away. Which meant he couldn't leave the room. Not even for a moment to get rid of the tray. Maybe Lennox will come back and take it. I thought guilty. I was grateful he didn't want to leave me, but I felt bad as well. As he came back to my side, he would sign, "When your cast dries, I'll take you back to your room and give you my tea so you can rest there."
"Thank you, Snake. But....if it's not too much trouble...c-could I stay in your room while you're out with the team?" I asked. Blushing as I looked down at my lap. Biting my bottom lip softly. I didn't like feeling so vulnerable. Nor was I use to looking weak. But somehow...I knew it was okay to feel as such in front of Snake. Like I had no reason to fear or think I would be judged for it.

Thinking for just a moment Snake nodded and signed, "Sure. You're welcome to stay. I just ask that you do not go into my foot locker. That is strictly off limits." He knew of Sam's qualities, but still felt needed to tell her his limits. Only one other person had actually stayed inside of his room before, and that was Scarlett but it felt to be ages ago and she hasn't been back there since.

"Okay, Snake, you can take her back to her room," Doc said as he approached with a pad of paper scribbling his name on it and handing Sam a perscription of anti-biotics as well as some mild pain killers as well as a list of dos and don'ts. "You're medically excused from heavy duties for at least eight weeks," he said, "and after that will be physical therapy." He didn't want to bench her but had to in the end. Taking the medicines and papers and tucking them under his arm Snake held out a hand to help Sam off the table so they could begin their walk to his room.

After clearing up my head I went back to my room instead of trying to go around and find everyone in this maze of endless rooms and passageways. I was tapped to fill in for Sam and that meant there would be a lot of influx that I would have to deal with to ready myself. The shock wore off, but then I knew I was ready for this. This is why I am here.

Hawk would look up at Rip and Duke at their suggestion. "You want to put a newbie in her place?"
"We need a seventh member, sir."
"And Lennox is the only one who may be able to do it, sir." Hawk sat quietly in thought. While this was true, Lennox lacked the training and didn't know the team as well as Sam did.
"Get him started on his role!"
"Yes, sir!" Together the two turned and left his office to now track down Lennox and put him through the procedure with what time they had left before it was Go time!

"Sure. You're welcome to stay. I just ask that you do not go into my foot locker. That is strictly off limits." I nodded my head and smiled.
"Of course, Snake." I said smiling.
"Okay, Snake, you can take her back to her room," Doc said as he approached with a pad of paper. Scribbling his name on it, he handed it too me. It was a perscription for anti-biotics, as well as some mild pain killers. And a list of Do's and Dont's. Its like I haven't broken a bone before. I thought. This was my second time, actually. The last time had been in middle school during track. I was unfairly tripped and just landed wrong on my ankle. "You're medically excused from heavy duties for at least eight weeks," he said. "And after that will be physical therapy."
"Great..." I said with a sigh. I hated being benched. Taking the medicines and prescription, Snake held them under his arm and then held out a hand to me. Taking his hand, I let him help me down from the table. "Thanks." I smiled a little sadly as we made our way out of the room and headed off towards his.

The walk down the hall between the two of them was quiet as Snake kept one arm wrapped around Sam's waist. There wasn't another soul around as they finally reached Snake's rather isolated room. Swiping his card and entering the access code the door slid open and they stepped in. Even now the room was still dark, but Snake touched the light switch and slowly raised the brightness that showed how little there was inside the room. Placing the medicine and papers on the table Snake pointed to the mat that served as his bed. It was just a mat, not even a pillow. It was good for his hard back, but not sure how well it would serve as bed for the younger Sam. He signed, "This is it. Sorry it is not much."

I was still inside my room when Duke and Rip come searching for me and found me there. "Let's go, newbie," Duke said, "You're going to be joining us for the next mission." My head lifted up and I went with them without question and they took me to a briefing room where we would go over the map of the target area. This was it. As the three of us went down the hallway, either guys on either side of me, they discussed the purpose of this mission, "We're going to Vegas on this one. Near downtown, near the strip," Rip said, "Cobra has a building and they have a lot of communication arrays that are scanning the airwaves."

"Its okay, Snake..there has been worse." I tell him. Squeezing his hand with my free one before walking over to the table and sitting down. "All that training and practice...3 months, just wasted!" I grumbled. The rest of his free moments were spent serving me tea and making sure I knew when to take my meds while he was gone. He made a place for me to sleep as comfy as he could, and after another cup of tea, I had begun to feel sleepy. By then it was time for the Joe's to roll out and Snake looked nervous to leave me. So to held calm him, I sent him to my room to retrieve my bag.

He returned faster than I thought and with a little bit of fumbling, I managed to pull out two wrist talkies. "Here. This one has a keyboard. So you can type. And on the screen, we'll see what the other is saying. You can use this to talk to me and check on me. Okay?" This was the best I could do and he seemed to understand. With a squeeze of my shoulder, he was off. And I was left to lay down in the spot her made for me and try to get some rest. It was going to be a long day.

When Snake joined the others in the planning room Scarlett lifted up her head and smiled. "How's Sam?" she asked. Using his signs Snake replied, "Doc gave her medicine and she's resting."

"That's good" Duke replied as he introduced me to Snake, "Lennox is going to be taking Sam's place on this mission."

We shook hands but it was impossible to tell what he was feeling behind his mask and he had a kung-fu grip for a hand as we shook and my face contorted when he nearly crushed my knuckles and my face turned red with pain. "Don't worry about that stuff, man," Rip laughed, "He did to me the first time we met. Don't take it personally. He's always like that. Once he gets use to you, you'll start to get a long."

"That's reassuring" I said sarcastically as I held my sore right hand with my left.

"Enough chatter, let's get to business." Scarlett said. Shaking her head as Hawk entered the room to brief them. After their briefing, it was time to pack up and move out! Scarlett looked over her things one more time shouldering her bag and heading out to meet the others. On the way, she catches up with Lennox. "Think you can handle this?" She asked. Clapping his shoulder as they walked beside each other.

While the Joe's were heading out, the Cobra's were coming in. They would hide and lurk. Waiting for the right moment to strike. At the head of their call...Stormshadow.

"I got this" I nodded giving her a smirk. We went to the armory, checked out our weapons and ammunitin then headed towards our bird sitting on a platform. Hawk saw us out.

As we walked Hawk said to Scarlett, who was our mission lead, "I know about what happened to Sam and Connelly. Wanted to let you know that I took care of it. I busted Connelly to private and i'm put him in the brig and soon i'm getting his happy little ass out of here. Right now, all of our resources are being focused on this mission." He looked over at me, "Son, I know you're being put on the spot, but we're going to need you to do this. All these Joes here are the best we have. If Sam were here the team would be complete. I don't want any heroics out you," pointing a finger at me, "I just want you....all of you...back here in one piece. Go find Cobra and eliminate that threat."

"Yo Joe!"

What we didn't know was happening was as we were preparing to leave a Cobra team was working its way towards us. Using subterranian transport diggers built by Mars Industries a large group of Cobra Vipers were burrowing towards the PIT.

"I know about what happened to Sam and Connelly. Wanted to let you know that I took care of it. I busted Connelly to private and I'm going to put him in the brig and soon I'm getting his happy little ass out of here. Right now, all of our resources are being focused on this mission."
"Good. The rest of us can breath easier with him gone." Scarlett muttered. Folding her arms over her chest while Hawk looked over at Lennox.
"Son, I know you're being put on the spot, but we're going to need you to do this. All these Joes here are the best we have. If Sam were here the team would be complete. I don't want any heroics out you," Hawk pointed a finger at Lennox. "I just want you-all of you," Theres a quick glance to Snake, "Back here in one piece. Go find Cobra and eliminate tat threat."
"Go Joe!" They cheered. Boarding their transport out of the pit.

As the Cobra made their way to the pit, Sam slept soundly in Snake's room. Hugging the blanket close around her with her free hand. The occupants of the Pit moved about their day to day routines in a blissful unawarness. No one knew they were going to be attacked until it was too late.

The helicopter was up and away carrying us with it to the brightly lit Las Vegas. We could see the dim glow of it this far out. I had never been to Vegas, but I didn't want to go at it like this. As we flew at 500 feet over the cold desert we put on our headsets where we could communicate Scarlett said, "Right, we have Tunnel Rat and Road Block already have eyes on the tower and so far it's business as usual there. They don't know that we're coming."

"Remember, we're there to destroy their servers. That's our mission," Duke called out, "and their antenna arrays. Their machines there are capable of scanning almost any wireless communication wave lengths. That means that they can tap into people's phone calls and wireless internet."

"They might be able to tap into our own net," Rip said, "all the way back at the PIT"

"Shit!" I exclaimed.

As we were following the highway, deep in the earth, the drills were moving towards the PIT. The solid metal drills were churning through the dry desert and in one sudden eruption burst through the reinforced wall of the PIT and hatches opened and out came dozens of armed vipers and out from one came a tall, well fit man in solid white and on his back were two katana blades and issued orders to the vipers to fan out to secure strategic points as he ordered several to follow him. "Remember," the man growled, "Snake Eyes is mine."

The team was off and in flight for the lively night life of Las Vegas. Now flying at 500 feet over the cold Arabian desert, the team put on their headsets so they could communicate. Right, we have Tunnel Rat and Road Block already in position with eyes on the tower. So far it's business as usual there.
"Shit!" Lennox exclaimed as Breaker worked furiously to start cryptic the PIT's network.
"Buckle in boys! This is gonna be a long flight!"

It was the sudden alarm that blared through the PIT that woke me. Sitting up, I would sit quietly as I listened carefully. There were sounds of fighting yells. No doubts orders being given to combat the intruders. Who were we being attacked by? Curious, I moved from my shift bed with a hiss but ran to the door. Opening it, I peeked out into the hall but just as quickly ducked back in after spotting the familiar white coat of Stormshadow. Locking Snake's door I looked for anything to barricade in front of it. But I was running out of time. Running over to his closet I quickly slipped inside and hid. Closing the closet doors behind me, I held my breath and looked to the only communication I had to Snake. Should I use it to call him and tell him? Could I risk being his distraction?

As we continued our flight I glanced around at everyone in the aircraft. They were bundled up for the long, cold flight with everyone wearing CVC helmets with mics so we could communicate with each other, but, surprisingly, it was very quiet, not even Rip Cord was saying just sitting with his back to the wall covering the engine to stay warm as the pilots made slight corrections as a tail wind began to carry us closer to Vegas.

I finally broke the silence by asking, "What can Cobra gain by scanning people's cell phones?"

"A lot of things," Duke replied, "People talk and text and they say all kinds of things; bank accounts, business transactions, and a lot of things that are best kept quiet" he said just as his eyes shift towards a rather nervous looking Rip. "They can use that to tap into people's accounts and take their money or to use it as black mail. But what we're concerned about is them tapping into our frequencies and finding where the PIT is."

Back at the PIT the personnel were scrambled to their battle stations to repel intruders. Hallways were locked down as armed guards set up barricades, but they missed Storm Shadow and his group of Vipers as they walked down the hallway and the white clothed ninja paused in front of Snake's room. There was no writing or any signs that this was the silent man's room, but the sword brother knew, somehow, that this was it and took out his katana and sliced the lock but the door refused to open. Storm Shadow instructed a Viper to blow the door with a small charge of C-4 the lock blew open and Storm Shadow charged in with his blade held high ready to strike but there was nothing here. Just his meager possessions. Scanning the room Storm Shadow could feel though that he wasn't alone.

I flinched when I heard the loco get broken. But the door didn't open. Amazing how pillows and blankets kept something from opening. At the last minute, I dialed Snake but didn't dare say anything. The door was suddenly blow open and I covered mouth. Carefully hugging my knees to my chest. I could only hope Snake was going answer. If he chose to answer the call, a little hologram screen would appear and I would have to do is press a side button mine to let him see from my vantage point. So I kept my eyes on my wrist as I tried very, very hard to keep quiet. Now I just had to hope I had stashed my meds well enough to keep it from being known I was here.

Scarlett would open an eye and look at Duke as he spoke. "Breaker is working as we speak to keep that from happening."
"It would go faster if I had Sam..." Breaker muttered into his Mic. There was a nod of silent agreement before Scarlett noticed something flashing on Snake's wrist.
"Yo, Snake....what's that?"

Snake turned his wrist towards his face and touched a button to stop the flashing and to read the tiny screen. It was from Sam warning him that Storm Shadow was at the PIT! Immediately he signed a message to Scarlett who in turn tried to get comms with the PIT but nothing was getting in. The others in the group were told of this and at first there was some disbelief but Duke said, "If that's from Sam then she doesn't have any reason to lie. If Storm Shadow is there, then, he is."

"We should go back!" Rip called out, but immediately Duke said negative.

"We can't go back. We have to go through with our mission. We don't know what we're getting into back there. We have to stay focused on our mission and let those at the PIT take care of the problem" That was something rather uncalled for. If the people at the PIT were in danger then we had to go back, but Duke and then Scarlett wouldn't be shaken from their position.

Scanning the room Storm Shadow could feel that someone was in here. His eyes went over the ceiling as well, a good place for someone to hide like a ninja, but it was empty, but his eyes was drawn towards the closet, blade held tightly in his right hand he called out, "You in there! Come out! You're not Snake Eyes, but you are someone of value...to me."

Snake turned his wrist towards his face and touched a button to stop the flashing. As he did so, Sam would activate her camera, which then activated his. A tiny screen would appear as if to play subtitles for what they were seeing and trying to hear. At first they were seeing nothing. Just darkness with the slight sound of Sam's frightened breathing. She couldn't be expected to defend herself with a broken arm and medication in her system. Then...there came a voice. And it didn't belong to Sam. "You in there! Come out! You're not Snake Eyes, but you are someone of value...to me." Sam gulped and knew she had been found.
"O-okay! Ju-just put t the sword down. I don't have a weapon..." She said. Carefully standing up and slipping out of the closet with her good hand held up in surrender. The small screen at her wrists changing to keep Storm Shadow in sight. Immediately, Snake signed a message to Scarlett.
Its Storm Shadow! And he's got Sam cornered!
"Crud!" Scarlett growls. "Breaker! See if you can get comms with the PIT! Stat!"
"I can't! They must have taken the comms out!"
"Whats happening?!"
"Cobra is at the PIT and Storm Shadow has Sam." At first there was some disbelief. But Duke knew better.
"If that's from Sam, then she doesn't have any reason to lie. If Storm Shadow is there, then, he is."
"We should go back!" Rip called out, but immediately Duke said negative.
"We can't go back. We have to go through with our mission. We don't know what we're getting into back there. We have to stay focused on our mission and let those at the PIT take care of the problem." Duke and then Scarlett wouldn't be shaken from their position.
