Haircuts from Hell

Just be honest and say you weren't happy with how it ended up last time and foolishly had a go yourself. If you say it nicely she hopefully won't be too offended and will probably be amused with your DIY results... especially if you apologise profusely :D

I'd just call and fess up...

I called her, went back in. She caught it and fixed it.

If I hadn't been able to get in that quickly I would have taken scissors to it myself, though. And I think she would have understood.
Oh, you two. So emotionally healthy...good grief! :D
We're talking about telling someone whose full time occupation is wielding pointy objects that they did a less than stellar job.

My hairdresser gave me an awesome haircut in March of last year. Since then, I've asked for the same one each time and I swear to blueberries she gives me a slightly different one each time. It never looks bad, but it never looks as good as that first one. Maybe she's just not paying as much attention. Maybe she's just re-playing that part in The Simpsons Movie where Homer Simpson is walking the Spider Pig across the ceiling in her head over and over, singing the Spider Pig ditty, and she's not even thinking about my hair.
So I haven't told her. And I'm ordinarily a pretty up front kinda person, but I have this sick feeling that 95% of her will understand and the other 5% will become just a little vindictive about it.
What a sick little world me and my hair live in.

Zadie, probably better to 'fess up. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I've turned this over too much in my head. I now feel slightly queasy at the prospect of going... :(

I've had two hair disasters in my life. The first time, I stupidly went to the place inside Wal-Mart. The cut itself was fine... it was the style that was the issue. The lady used a hairbrush on my hair. Everybody knows you don't use a hairbrush on naturally curly hair. Anyway, by the time she was done, it was straight as a board! I was mortified. I went straight home and washed it. Poor curls took awhile to bounce back.

The other time, I had longish hair and asked for it to be shorter. I wanted the fullness kept in the back though. Instead, she scalped me. Seriously, it looked like a short boy cut (every last curl was gone). I was furious. Needless to say, I never went back to either place.

I've become really picky about who cuts my hair. The problem is... the lady who has done mine for the last 6 years quit, so I haven't found a new person yet.

It was silly of me to start this thread... It's the equivalent of asking people to share their best aircrash stories before you get on a plane...

Always have. Still do. I'm of the minority of men in my generation who actually know how to wear a 50's Stetson well.

Why, I've been thinking lately of picking one up. I tried on a somewhat casual fedora and thought it looked pretty good. Perhaps you could give me some pointers on wearing it well. Jaunty angle, dapper clothes to accessorize, perhaps? Or is it all about attitude?

I just recently let my hair grow long into a ponytail thingy.

And I must say it looks pretty ok now. But somewhere in between buzz cut short and long enough to be able to tie the damn thing up in the back, it looked like a bad 70's cliché.

I've been considering growing my hair out longer, but haven't been able to get past the stage where it looks like an afro. My hair doesn't grow properly, you see, it grows straight out from my head. Any advice?

My best haircut story comes from when I was cutting mine myself with a cheap £5 razor. You can't really go wrong with a no3 all over, at least not unless the razor decides it's going to start breaking halfway through and only cutting the patches of hair that it wants to. It left me with approximately half of my scalp area sporting no3 hair and the other half as randomly placed tufts. I looked like a refugee from Thundercats.

Needless to say, I repaired the damage as best I could with a beard trimmer and then went to the hairdresser's the next day.

Close runner up to that story is the one where I dyed my hair blonde...

Aarrrrgh!

*sigh*

The bottom line is that I don't want to go. I hate having stuff done to me. Going to the hairdresser's is only marginally more acceptable than going to the doctor's... :(
Okay, excuse me, I have sympathy but I think I need to slap you [slap! slap!]

WAKE UP! You are PAYING this person your money, GOOD money that you worked hard to earn, money from YOUR pocket to do a GOOD job on your hair. She did a shit job. And you--you??? are scared to death of having her find out you futzed with it because of this? You're sick to your stomach to go back to her and have her do the same or worse?

Get your head out of your ass! Cancel that appointment NOW. You are NOT going to her again. I don't give a shit how much of a hassle it is to cancel the appointment and find someone new. That's exactly what you're going to do. Look at what an emotional wreck you are over this! And you're paying money to feel this way? To fear and worry and fret? Find another hairdresser via recommendations from friends, one that pays attention to you, listens to you, cares, and will at least let you point to a picture and say, "like that, please." Someone who will make going though this marginally pleasant.

Someone who WANTS your business and cares about you!

You are not a little kid stuck in a barber's chair weeping "please mommy do I have to?" You're a grown woman. Stand up for yourself. Get a haircut from someone else. If you like it, keep going to them...because they've EARNED your money. This woman hasn't. She failed you. And I don't care how long you've been going to her, she has lost your business. Simple as that.

If you must go to her for some misguided, fucked up reason, then you say, straight out. "I wasn't happy with what you did last time." And that's it. You don't owe anyone any further explanation for anything. You are not going to a doctor who needs to know all the details. She's cutting your hair. And you are paying her to cut it.

I simply show up at the haidresser once a year... about the time I need to see the doctor :)

There are many times I thank the stars above that I'm a male. The barber shop is one of 'em.

There's no denying that I am a certified tightwad; I'm still in shock over the fact that my haircut costs $12.00 ($15.00, with tip). Haircuts oughta cost $5.00 just like a nice hotel room shouldn't cost more than, say, 50 bucks a night.

Fortunately, I'm one of those lucky fellows who's hair is thick and grows like a weed. I just walk into the barber shop and ask for a #7 (that's the size of the fitting that goes o'er the electric razor). If the barber screws up, the evidence disappears 'neath a new head of hair within roughly six weeks.

Do I get another slap for saying I had a really great haircut?

Seriously, I'm not going to shoot the woman down for one bad cut out of dozens of fantastic ones. She's human. No one's perfect.

And I think I'd have the pre-hairdresser stomach even if I were going to Vidal Sassoon. Like I said, I get edgy about having stuff done to me.

But at least we got some good haircut from hell stories out of this thread :D

My husband cuts his own hair with a Flowbee. I'll be more than happy to pack it up and send it to you. (You'll have to supply your own vacuum cleaner.) :D

Bwaa! I was half wondering if one would come up! Thank you!

For guys, the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is seven days.

I took the kids to the pool yesterday. I dived under and came up blind. My hair, when wet, reaches my top lip. I need a haircut, bad. I moved here five years ago, have been to half a dozen different hairdressers and haven't found the right one yet.
I'm scared.

Growing out is always harrowing. After a while I look like d'Artagnan (or, I guess, Athos, now that I'm old) but the in-between stages are frequently horrifying.

I had hair nearly to my bottom one year as a teenager. My mom trimmed it for me normally. She said she was going to take a few inches off to tidy up the ends. I started to panic cos more hair and more hair kept falling on the floor. Turns out she needed glasses for close up stuff and kept making mistakes and kept trying to fix it. I ended up bawling and in tears with hair length being at the nape of my neck. She kept saying to trust her, so I did in my true cancer nature. After that no one touched my hair for a good 7 or 8 years beside myself.

Ah the haircut from hell. See my av?

I was going for a perm.
