I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down."
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your old flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it."

He said, "Have a seat," and I sat down.
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town?"
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag,
But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag.

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when
Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing Say Can You See.
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seems.

"And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag.

"On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun.
She turned blood red in World War II.
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She was sent where she was by her Uncle Sam.

"She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they've about quit waving her back here at home.
In her own good land here she's been abused --
She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused.

"And the government for which she stands
Is scandalized throughout the land.
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in.
'Cause she's been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning, take her
down every night.
We don't let her touch the ground and we fold
her up right.
On second thought, I do like to brag,
'Cause I'm mighty proud of the Ragged Old Flag."

If tomorrow all the things were gone
. . I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
. . with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
. . to be livin' here today.
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
. . And they can't take that away.

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up
. . next to you and defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the USA

From the lakes of Minnesota
... To the hills of Tennessee
... Across the plains of Texas
... From sea to shining sea
... From Detroit down to Houston
... And New York to LA
Well there's pride in every American heart
And its time we stand and say..

That I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up . . next to you and defend her still today
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land

OMAN AND JEN MWAHHHHHHHHHHH

Sun comin' up over New York City.
School bus driver in a traffic jam.
Staring at the faces in her rear view mirror,
Looking at the promise of the promise land.

One kid dreams of fame and fortune.
One kid helps pay the rent.
One could end up going to prison
One just might be president

Chorus
Only in America!
Dreamin' in red, white, and blue!
Only in America!
Where we dream as big as we want to

Chorus
We all get a chance,
Everybody gets to dance,
Only in America!

Sun goin' down on an L.A freeway
Newly-weds in back of a limousine
A welder's son and a banker's daughter
All they want is everything!

She came out here to be an actress
He was a singer in a band.
They just might go back to Oklahoma
And talk about the stars they could have been

Chorus
Only in America!
Dreamin' in red, white, and blue!
Only in America!

Where we dream as big as we want to
We all get a chance,
Everybody gets to dance,
Only in America!

Everybody gets to dance,
Only in America!

Sun goin' down on an L.A freeway
Newly-weds in back of a limousine
A welder's son and a banker's daughter
All they want is everything!

She came out here to be an actress

Well if you ask me where I come from
Here's what I tell everyone
I was born by God's dear grace
In an extra-ordinary place
Where the stars and stripes and the eagle flies...

It's a big old land with countless dreams.
Happiness ain't out of reach
Hard work pays off the way it should
Yea, I've seen enough to know that we got it good

Where the stars and stripes and the eagle flies...
There's a lady that stands
in a harbor for what we believe
And there's a bell that still echoes
the price that it cost to be free

I pledge allegiance to the flag
And if that bothers you, well that's too bad
But if you've got pride, and you're pride to do
Hey, we can use more like me and you

Where the stars and stripes and the eagle flies...
Yes, There's a lady that stands
in a harbor for what we believe
And there's a bell that still echoes
the price that it cost to be free

No, it ain't the only place on earth
It's the only place that I prefer
To love my wife and raise my kids
(Hey) The same way my daddy did

Where the stars and stripes and the eagle flies...
Where the stars and stripes and the eagle flies...

On this fourth let us not forget our soliders who can not be home with their loved ones and fight for the freedoms we have.

these are a few links I was sent over the last year and saved.

these touched me and hope they do you to.

God bless America and keep us safe and free
Safe from "all our enemies" wherever they may be,
For enemies are forces that often dwell within,
Things that seem so harmless become a major sin.

Little acts of selfishness grow into lust and greed
and make the love of power our idol and our need....
For all our wealth and progress are as worthless can be
Without the faith that makes us great and kept our
nation free.

And while it's hard to understand the complexities of war
Each one of us must realize that we are fighting for
The principles of freedom and the decency of man,
But all of this must be achieved according to God's Plan.

So help us as Americans to search deep down inside
And discover if the things we do are always justified
And teach us to walk humble and close in Thy ways
And give faith and courage and put purpose in our days

And make each one of us aware that each must do his part
For in the individual is where peace must have a start
For a better world to live in where all are safe and free
Must start with faith and hope and love deep in the heart
of "me."

Happy Fourth

Great thread, my friend...
My small contribution...

MINUTES TO MEMORIES
(John Mellencamp-George M. Green)

On a Greyhound thirty miles beyond Jamestown
He saw the sun set on the Tennessee line
He looked at the young man who was riding beside him
He said I'm old kind of worn out inside
I worked my whole life in the steel mills of Gary
And my father before me I helped build this land
Now I'm seventy-seven and with God as my witness
I earned every dollar that passed through my hands
My family and friends are the best thing I've known
Through the eye of the needle I'll carry them home

Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

The rain hit the old dog in the twilight's last gleaming
He said Son it sounds like rattling old bones
This highway is long but I know some that are longer
By sunup tomorrow I guess I'll be home
Through the hills of Kentucky 'cross the Ohio river
The old man kept talking 'bout his life and his times
He fell asleep with his head against the window
He said an honest man's pillow is his peace of mind
This world offers riches and riches will grow wings
I don't take stock in those uncertain things

Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right

Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides No one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son i'm telling it to you

Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

I Am Your Flag

Hi! Remember Me? Some people call me Old Glory, others the Stars and Stripes. Also, I have been referred to as the Star Spangled Banner. But whatever they call me, I am your flag. I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on earth. There is something that has been bothering me lately and I thought that we might talk it over because it is about you and me.

Remember the first time we met? There was a 4th of July Parade many years ago. I was leading the parade down Main Street. I remember how proud I felt that day because everyone made me feel that way. Patriotism was very strong that day and you could feel it in the air. Even from a block away I could see you sitting high on your Dad's shoulders. I could see your broad smile and as I got closer I could actually see my stars and stripes sparkling in your eyes. I could see that you were proud. And as I approached, your Dad sat you down, immediately removed his hat and placed it across his left shoulder so his hand was across his heart. Remember?

And you and your little sister, you both had your hands pressed so firmly over your hearts. I couldn't help but swell with pride as I waved in the breeze. Yes, that was a very proud day for me. With everyone paying me the reverence I deserve. Maybe I sound a little conceited. Well, I am. I have a right to be. I represent the United States of America. More than one aggressive nation as tried to haul me down. But they've all felt the fury of this freedom loving nation.

But something is different now. Something has changed. I don't feel as proud as I used to. What's happened? I'm still the same old flag. Oh, I have added a couple of more stars and a lot more blood has been shed to defend me since that 4th of July parade of long ago.

Dad is gone now and the old hometown has a new look. The last time I came down your street I didn't feel as proud. You just stood there with your hands in your pockets and gave me a small glance and then looked away. I saw children running around and shouting. They didn't seem to know who I am. I saw an old man take his hat off and look around. He didn't see anyone else with theirs off so he quickly put his back on.

Is it a sin to be patriotic? The other day on bases I was being lowered from my lofty perch as our national anthem was being played. I saw several people standing tall and giving the proper salute. They were proud. But then I saw several others in uniform come out of a building, looked at what was happening and turned and run back inside.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Brothers of those who had given their lives to defend this country were running away as if they were ashamed of me. I saw several other men and women not in uniform. They were walking and talking. One of them wore my colors on his shirt and if you can believe one wore my stars and stripes as a patch for the seat of her jeans. They didn't seem to know who I am.

They didn't seem to know what I stand for. They don't seem to know how many brave men and women have fought for the freedoms they now enjoy. They don't seem to know how many selfless Americans have made sacrifices for that which they seemingly take for granted today.

When you salute me, you're saluting our disabled veterans. You're saluting the brave men who gave their lives in the rescue attempt in Iran. Those still missing in action and those who never came back from the fight to keep the country free. When you salute me, you are saluting all of them. You are saluting those principles which have made the United States of America the greatest nation on earth. You are saluting the technology and courage that took man to the moon. You are saluting a man who had a dream that people of all races and creeds could live together as brothers. You are saluting those who asked not what their country can do for them but what they can do for their country.

I don't think the others mean to be disrespectful. They just need your help to reaffirm these things. They need your help to realize who I am and what I stand for. That I am the flag. I am the symbol of freedom. I am the emblem of the greatest nation in the history of the world. I have led your sons into battle from Lexington to Viet Nam. I have covered your honored dead under silent white crosses row upon row. I am Old Glory. I am the Star Spangled Banner.

Honor me, respect me, if necessary defend me with your lives. Never let our enemies tear me down for I may not return. Keep alight the fires of patriotism. Strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy. And I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom for all man kind. I am not just a scrap of cloth. I am your flag and I'm still proud of you. Because I do remember.

Happy 4th of July, America!

I AM THE UNITED STATES

I was born on July 4, 1776, and the Declaration of Independence is my birth certificate. The bloodlines of the world run in my veins, because I offered freedom to the oppressed. I am the United States.

I am 185,000,000 living souls, and the ghost of millions who have lived and died for me.

I am Nathan Hale and Paul Revere. I stood at Lexington and fired the shot heard around the world. I am Washington, Jefferson, and Patrick Henry. I am John Paul Jones, the Green Mountain boys, and Davy Crockett. I am Lee, Grant, and Abe Lincoln.

I am the Brooklyn Bridge, the wheat lands of Kansas, and the granite hills of Vermont. I am the coal fields of the Virginias and Pennsylvania; the fertile lands of the West; the Golden Gate and the Grand Canyon. I am Independence Hall, the Monitor and the Merrimac.

I am big. I sprawl from the Atlantic to the Pacific, three million square miles throbbing with industry. I am more than 5,000,000 farms; I am forest, field, mountain and desert. I am quiet villages...and cities that never sleep. You can look at me and see Ben Franklin walking down the streets of Philadelphia with his bread loaf under his arm. You can see Betsy Ross with her needle. You can see the lights of Christmas, and hear the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" as the calendar turns.

I am Babe Ruth and the World Series. I am 169,000 schools and colleges and 250,000 churches where people worship God as they think best. I am a ballot dropped in a box, the roar of a crowd in a stadium, and the voice of a choir in a cathedral. I am an editorial in a newspaper, and a letter to a Congressman.

I am Eli Whitney and Stephen Foster. I am Tom Edison, Albert Einstein, and Billy Graham. I am Horace Greeley, Will Rogers, and the Wright brothers. I am George Washington Carver, Daniel Webster, and Jonas Salk. I am Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman, Thomas Paine.

Yes, I am the Nation, and these are the things that I am. I was conceived in freedom, and, God willing, in freedom will I spend the rest of my days. May I possess always the integrity, the courage, and the strength to keep myself unshackled, to remain a citadel of freedom and a beacon of hope to the world.

I am the United States!

Time again to celebrate all that it means to be American!!!
