As I said, I don't have a rational explanation, at this point in time. In the VF article, the author speaks of the need (as a culture), to show "the face of dependency", and I think this has something to do with it.

Have you seen the movie "Zombieland".? Well, there is a scene in it that is my all time fantasy - essentially taking a baseball bat to a shop full of "knick knacks".

Somehow I never thought about it, although I do remember being totally blown away by the cute stationary I could get in Japan when I was a kid compared to the boring one my classmates had (and one of the boy chew my eraser 'cause he thought was chewing-gum ...).
