An early morning fog hung in the air on a quiet street. The neighborhood, after surviving another yearly block party, had still been sleeping. Well, except for Edgar Samuelsson. For him, there was nothing better than spending a peaceful morning alone with his thoughts. A mug of coffee by his side and a cigarette hanging loosely from his lips, Edgar was torn from his moment of bliss by the smacking of a newspaper as it landed on his blacktop driveway. He waved at the passing car, but the gesture wasn’t returned.

Edgar drew in a breath only to find his cigarette had long since burned away to nothing. His coffee gone too. As good a time as any to start the day. He cut a diagonal line across his front yard, the morning dew cold against his ankles, to grab his paper. Morning rituals were always the hardest to break.

He slid the paper out of its plastic wrapper, noted the date before scanning the headlines. Something registered. Something was special about today. Something happening. Something arriving? No. That didn’t sound quite right. Expecting a call? Call someone? Close, but still … Shit. Someone was coming. His sister. And the house was a mess. He ran through the grass once again, this time completely soaking his slippers beyond the point of comfort.

Edgar kicked off his slippers as he entered the front door, sending a handful of wet grass clippings through the air onto his tile floor. He’d worry about that later. Start with the big mess and work your way down, he thought.

“Shiiiit. How could I forget she was coming today?” he asked the empty house. No answer except the rumbling of fresh ice being made in his freezer.

After a quick glance at the clock reaffirmed that his sister would arrive in two hours, Edgar ran through the house grabbing all the dirty clothes that had been strewn about and threw them into his closet. There shouldn’t be any reason that she’d look in there anyways.

In no time at all, Edgar was covered in sweat as he rearranged his house to look presentable for his sister. This would mark the first time she’d had a chance to visit his house, and he didn’t want to make a bad impression by letting her see how lazy he’d become since he left home.

By the time he’d finally finished cleaning the house and had showered away the sweat he’d worked up, the doorbell chimed in the hallway. Edgar glanced over at the alarm clock on his nightstand. Always right on time. He descended the stairs with his arms threaded through his t-shirt. He pulled the shirt over his head as he walked off the last stair. Ruffled his hand through his hair.

Took a deep breath.

Opened the door.
