If you ever held one, or shot one you probably wouldn't worry about the price all that much.

There are folks out there, like the marsupial bear, that are scarfing them up as fast as they can. The only way the price is going to go down is if Colt starts making them again.

Actually those prices are not all that unreasonable. A vanilla 1911 is going for $900 on the new price list. A Gold Cup is in the $1300 range.

I noticed that they're manufacturing the Colt .38 Super again (it is a favorite of combat shooting competitors (IPSC)) and my mouth started to drool. It's like the old Browning Hi-power (9mm Parabellum) on steroids. (And that is another pistol I'd love to add to the collection.) I can hold a 5" group at 7 yds rapid fire (1 round/2 sec.) with the .45ACP, with the .38 Super that group drops to approx. 3.5". The 9mm yields no significant recoil adjustment advantage in grouping even with the drop in velocity and felt recoil.

Sadly the Colt Woodsman is no longer in manufacture either.

I guess, for what the market says they're worth. For me that's pretty steep.

I've heard that the 1911 price will drop as people who grew up idolizing WWII heroes fade from the market. Is there really anything special about the gun other than that John Wayne carried it? I've never shot one or anything.

I came across .38 Super in some google search or other as well. Got a favorite gun that's chambered for it, or is that what you mean by the Browning?

The one I handled was a tack driver. The Citation is a good one as well.

Slim built his with std Ruger scope mounts. Head shots on small game are my preference with a .22. Prices were extremely reasonable, last I checked.

There's mechanics and there's voodoo. Voodoo is a huge player when you can't read the numbers on the targets at 300m.
