Hey, gun nuts!

Krag rifles are highly collectable IF in their original military configuration. Unfortunately, for many years they were simply considered 'surplus rifles' and the vast majority that survive have been sporterized for civilian use. Some of these were very well done by true craftsmen such as the Griffin & Howe firm, but most were amateur jobs involving cutting down the military stocks and so forth.

Typical NOT-sporterized 1898 Krag rifles can range from several hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars in value. Some very rare variants can attain $10,000 to the right buyer.

The last military Krag I saw for sale at a gun show was offered for $700, iirc. It was in good condition, based on a curious look but no more.

The last pre-64 Model 88 was serial number 148,858.

A guns value depends greatly on condition...ballpark figures for the value of a Model 88 in 284 Win. in 95% condition would be about $900 for a post-64 rifle and about $2000 for the pre-64 as the 284 was only available in the pre-64 version for one year....The most noticable difference between the two would be the stock....The pre-64 stock had diamond cut checkering while the post -64 had the oak leaf impressed checkering.
152007A with diamond checkered stock and grip... that should be a post 64 serial number, but it's definitely the diamond checkering.

I'll have to find someone who knows then to look at it.

What do you think about the .38? Shoot it or is it "collectable?"

I'd shoot them all, and then clean them all and store them carefully until next time.

The prices on the m36's vary all over the place depending on condition and year mfg. For the most part far too many have been mfg. for it to be a true collectable.

The Win. will value out in the $1,700 range. The .284 was never popular and it's considered a rare chambering for that rifle.

The Springfield is more than likely a 30-40 Krag. It's a wall hanger of no particular value unless it's documented as to have been owned by someone of note.

Ishmael

Cheers, Ish. I think the Springfield is going to get hung over the fireplace in front of the zebra painting. What do you think about the .38? Should I send it off to be somebody's purse gun or should I tell her to sell it and get something new? It's in very good condition...I'll post pics of it and the Winchester when I get back from dinner. The Springfield will need a firehosing before I let anyone see it up close, I think.

Oh, and is it still possible to get .284 ammo? I might like to shoot this rifle a bit.

Seems to be a lot of the sheriffs model still around. If it were in perfect shape hang on to it. If not no big loss.

If you belong to the NRA you cold get all the answers.:D The Springfield Armory Museum will answer e-mails if you give them complete details.

I'd be willing to discuss the Krag with you if you're ever inclined to part with it.
I mentioned it to Lady P and she's sentimental about it right now. Technically it's hers, so I have to follow her wishes. Were it me, I'd unload it and buy something fun.
I've heard that the .284 isn't pleasant to shoot, but that might be coming from wimps.
I saw the same thing in several reviews. Made me wonder.
And he ain't very far from SA, which is in Springfield MA.

I think I might call them and bring it down and have them look at it. It would be interesting to know any history on it. Uncle died without telling anyone it existed.

Am I reading that right as $43 for 20 rounds? How does that compare to other ammo? I don't think I've ever bought ammo in my life. No wonder you guys reload.

High price, most lesser used calibers are. Plus join the NRA or remain a hypocrite. .:D

I figured as much. Not only is it obscure, a pain to shoot, but expensive as well. That somehow seems fitting of this particular person to leave behind.

Who gives a shit about the NRA? I'm not a member of any organization like that, except for once in a great while if I go climbing internationally I join the AAC for their rescue insurance.

Without the NRA you would have already lost the right to have any guns/rifles.

I have yet to see one pass down the river, but you have guns.:D
Point being I don't support any lobbying group. I leave that to useful idiots with more money than brains. I would have had guns anyway.
Jesus, destruction of government property. 6 months confinement hard labor, loss of all pay and allowances, and a Big Chicken Dinner.:D

I'll tell the deceased. I wish I'd known about this gun before he kicked it, so I could have asked him where he got it. I'm sure there was family history there. The other two I'm sure he bought back in the 50's and 60's.

I only support civil rights groups. :D and no you would not have a gun now without them. Hypocrite. :)
