okay so for all those nymph o's this topic is not for your...

okay I just picked up some speakers and a receiver. spent a lot of money on it and want to make sure it sounds and looks as good as possible. I read the directions and it says to connect all the sources(the xbox cable, ps3) into the receiver and then connect the receiver to the tv. it also appears I can just leave the sources plugged into the tv and then just run the audio into the receiver.

Is there a preferred way to do this? ie everything to the tv or everything to the receiver?

also if I connect the ps3 to the receiver with hdmi and then connect the receiver to the tv with component is that gonna degrade the signal(video) by not having hdmi throughout the process.

i'm not smart about this stuff so I wanted to get some opinions before I went out and bought 5 hdmi cables when I just needed one or whatever...

thanks everyone!

Connecting Audio Out from the TV to the Surround Sound decoder is probably the simplest installation and least prone to errors. The only problem is whether the TV's Audio Output strips the surround-sound encoding (for true surround sound)

Connecting HDMI signals into the receiver and letting it convert the video to composite or S-Video is definitely going to degrade the HD Quality; if you can't connect a "HDMI Out" from the receiver to the TV, then connect all HDMI sources directly to the TV.

it looks like this brand new piece of krap tv has no digital imput or coax input for sound. It only has composite? the red/white wires. the receiver is however top notch and has every input imaginable, as does the cable box.

Would it just be easier to purchase optical wires for the sound and leave the video connections as is? obviously this makes 2 remotes a necessity for volume and stuff but i've got the video connected the receiver and it's not working...

I am getting a little confused.

The function of TV is to show things. For sound you use your speakers, these same speakers are connected to a stereo receiver. The last thing you care about is the sound input on TV set.

Are you sure you want to use the TV set's built in speakers?

...

The red/white audio (RCA) connectors are analog/TTL connections.

kindashy has a point though -- the speaker quality of a TV's internal speakers isn't anything to brag about, not even the most expensive HD-Home Theater system put much thought or expense into the internal speakers.

I don't know if excluding nymph o's is such a good idea, they obviously have a lot of interest in input and output.

Besides how does being overly interested in sex, exclude one from understanding how to set up surround sound equipment?

no guys I bought speakers as well..I was just saying the tv has no outputs to send the sound to the receivers other than old a/v composite.....

and sorry if anyone felt not included : )

and I think I got it figured out...optical cables from the 360/ps3/cable box to the receiver, and all the video to the tv. seems to be all working...

thanks for the help though guys appreciated.

Glad you were able to get it figured out :) I was all ready to post a reply til I saw it got done :)

Can I hijack this just a little bit? I've got the same setup except that I don't understand all the fancy cable acronyms, but it's pretty good since my ex did it and he was very smart about all of that. But, when I turn the TV on to just watch TV, I can't make the sound come out the receiver & speakers. The TV built in speakers are horrible. Is there any way I can make the sound come out the nice speakers I have rather than the TV?

Can you post photo of the front of the receiver?

At a guess I would say the receiver has the button labeled TV. You need to push this button on the receiver to select the TV as the source of sound that the receiver then channels to the speakers.

I would go behind the tv and make sure there is a (red/white most likely)wire connected either from your cable box or the tv into the receiver...if there is turn on the receiver and the tv and go through the inputs on the receiver until the sound comes on.

clearly i'm not one to ask though...

the simplest way to do it is run the highest quality audio from each device to the receiver. then run the video from each device to the tv. only down side about this is when you switch inputs you have to switch them on the tv and the receiver. you can run the audio and video all thru the receiver and then out to the tv if you like. then when you switch inputs on the receiver it will switch the video also. one thing to not skimp on is high quality cables. they make a hell of a difference.

my two cents

What kind of surround sound did you go with? Did you do any research before buying? I'm looking into buying a surround system by the end of the year to work with a 65" flat screen T.V. and looking for opinions on what to get.

how much money do you want to spend?

I'd like to keep it around $500'ish and under. A few weeks ago I was almost sold on the Bose mini home theather system at Best Buy for $1k. The system had a killer sound to it until I came home and did some research. Apparently that style of home theather system lacked a lot of positive reviews.
