How do ya like them there turtles!

Turtles taped to tits for human entertainment. The contrast between the expression on the woman's face, and the struggling of the animals.

My honest response is to say that this image perfectly embodies the self-absorption and self-indulgence of humans in relation to other species. In another context, it would make a great poster to get people to really think.

and here all I could think was "wonder if I could do that with my turtles?"

I had about a half a dozen photographers in front of me.. and just as many who were just there to see what all the laughter was about.

This would have been even funnier on film because I had to hold them there.. then let go.. then stick them back on a few times. They wiggled and stretched thier little heads all the way out in an attempt to unstick themselves. IYM did a great job of trimming thier nails before hand.. but they still scratched a bit.

My only disapointment is that the photographer decided to do far too much airbrushing. My face looks plastic. I do not care for so much photoshopping. I'm me and I prefer to look like ME. 40 fits me well.. I don't care for anyone trying to make me look 20 (always comes across as so artificial).

Thank you Netzach. That shoot was just so much fun.

Ah, I've seen worse overshopping. I don't think it was too TOO egregious, but yeah, as someone who believes in wearing things that look good and not letting cellulite hang out intentionally but not having a shit fit over the fact that a sz 14 is a sz 14 is a sz 14, I get ya.

Wench, when I was a kid my buddies and I used to catch frogs for jumping contests. When we got bored of the game, we would let them go.

One day I caught a frog so large, so beautiful, so full of energy and spunk, so completely and utterly magnificent, that I wanted to keep him forever. So I took the frog back to the house and carefully laid out my case to my father. He listened patiently, and then said:

"If I were to lock you in your room, and promise to change your poop box and bring you good food every day, and take you out to play if and when I had the time, but of course only in a limited space so you can't run away, would you say that sounds like an okay way to spend your life?"

I shot back: "But Daaaad, it's only a frog!"

To this day I remember the look on his face when he responded: "I thought you just said he's magnificent."

That incident had a very strong impact on my perspective on this subject, and on my behavior as well. But you know what, Wench? It's not like I refuse to eat restaurant chicken that isn't free range.

Thankies .. you can play with them when you get here if you like. heheh :p

Shouldn't i ask them if its ok first? Gotta keep it consentual you know. ;)

Heads up, wench, did you see this?

"Authorities began investigating in September 2007 after a Union County, N.C., teen swam in her backyard pool with two pet turtles and a friend from South Carolina. Both girls developed bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever and stomach cramps; one developed kidney failure and spent eight days in the hospital."

Whew!

I thought for a minute these people who stormed off of Lit had come back.

BTW, once when my son was at a sleep over, the idiot parents let him and his two friends take a bath with a turtle. I was, surprised PISSED and let's just say he never spent the night there again.

On another note, my son (6 at that time) was/is not circumcised but the other two boys were. This did NOT cause any problems as people so often fear it will.

Holy shit. My mother wouldn't even let me hold worm races on the kitchen table. If I had ever tried to bring anything other than my own dirty self into the tub, she definitely would have had a major fit.

I've swum near turtles many times - but all snappers (or presumed snappers), so obviously there wasn't any touching!

I don't recall ever feeling curious about my friends' junk when I was 6.

Well he survived the turtle bath. The turtle actually scratched my son's genitals. Which was when it was noticed that he was somewhat different from the other two boys. This still didn't cause any problem with his friends or parents of them. LOL.

:rose:

I keep wondering why there are so many really stupid, selfish and lazy parents out there though.

*giggles* So was it my curiousity in doing this myself that you remembered or the pic of the very aptly placed turtles on sin?

And I didn't try it, and this is one of the reasons why. I take good care of my turtles, but they have a tendancy to carry salmanila. Just one of those naturally accuring things from what I've read.

So I scour the tub before and after my turtles get their tank cleaned.

And with the new piercings, I think I'll stick to traditional jewelry. *giggles*

I remembered that you owned turtles. And while I couldn't really picture you swimming with them, when I got to the part in the article about people kissing these pets, I did think: "Uh oh. Wench!" :)

What kind of turtles do you have, and where did you get them? The article says that selling turtles 4" inches in diameter & smaller has been illegal since '75.

I don't think the parents did tell me about it. Well she did tell me they all fell in a muddy creek together and she had to give them all a bath.

Oh and also they let the kids play on a treadmill. So my son was sporting road rash from that shit.

Her son was the sort I couldn't turn my back on for a second. He'd jump the fence, pick up a cat in a dangerous way or whatever. He got better under my rules, at my house, as he grew but he was one of my least favorite to have over because he was just a lot of WORK! LOL.

No, no kissing turtles for me. I am happy just to hand feed them from time to time. Other than that, they are kind of like fish, they stay in their tank, swim, climb, eat and do their thing. :)

I have 3 (one died two years ago) red ear sliders. Cutest lil guys, but I could be a bit biased. They are about 5 inches long now but when I got them they were the size of a nickle. I didn't find out that it was illegal to sell them that small until after I bought them. (was a rough period in my life and my ex husband was trying to give me something else to love on besides him)

We found them at a flee market. The lady had a 10 gallon fish tank with about 50 or more of these little nickle size red ears with 3 inches of water and a brick. They looked so sad. Don't ask me how I knew that, I could just feel that they weren't happy and I wanted to rescue them all. Fortunately my mom talked my ex out of giving into me this time. Once I got them all home then it hit me what am I going to do with 4 of these guys. They can live 30+years and they grow to the size of a dinner plate. But they tend to grow according to the room that they have to do so, and it takes 15 years for them to reach full size.

I thought about breading them at one time. I have one male and two females (from what I can tell) and they seem to be mating, but then I start thinking what the heck am I going to do with 50 of these little guys until they reach 4 inches!

Btw, we currently have two rescue pet box turtles. They have their own separate suites and separate "bathtubs."

:D

They once lived together but they surprised us by trying to bred summer before last. Previously they'd had quite an aversion to one another. Since the female has a damaged shell, possibly from being run over before found at church, it is dangerous for her to produce eggs. One or more could get stuck inside and kill her. The ones they produced summer before last did not hatch.

We want to get turtles, eventually. But right now the fish and the rat takes up more room than we really have, so I told the kids they'd have to wait.

They are fine, handsome animals, wench. No doubt about that.

I take pet care very seriously. The first turtle we got, was from the ex. That poor turtle hadn't seen the sun or had a proper diet in at least three years. His shell was soft and starting to rot.

We used to take him outside so he could get some sun but after we could do so, we built him an outdoor enclosure. Put a top on it though because big birds can carry turtles off and drop them.

I don't know much about box turtles, I do know that mine are comunity creatures. I had them seperate at one time because one was a lot smaller than the others, but the little one just kept getting more and more sick. When I put him back into the big tank, he was fine....well at least for another year. I'm still not totally sure why he died, but the other three are doing well.

Anyway, have they suffered from being seperated at all or do you have them where they can see each other?

Maybe you'll be ready close to the time I move to Ireland, then I'll have a nice home for them to go to and you'd get free turtles. :D It's a thought anyway seeing as you sound like you have as much idea on when you'll be ready as I do when I'll be moving.

I used to have a travel tank that I would take them out on the balcony with. I'd sit and read and soak up the sun, and they'd try to figure out how to excape. They're too big to fit all three of them in the travel tank now. I worry about setting up an outdoor tank for them because I've read about the different kinds of bacteria and such that live in outdoor environments compaired to indoor ones. The last thing I want to do is make them sick while I'm trying to give them a treat.

Aw, poor thing. I have a rental and live in a cool climate, so I don't know if I'd build a permanent outdoor closure, but I can see doing one that's moveable during the summer. That's just an awesome idea, though. That way they aren't as bored.

That's really interesting. Our turtles never really liked each other until thier hormones took over. I worried about pulling them apart but they seemed pretty happy within a few hours at being alone again. They can't see each other but they are side by side so maybe they can smell each other. Idk.

We used to put a bright sticker on the turtle so we could track him in case we lost focus and he starting moving fast. Yes, they can move fast when they want to!

:)

We lined the enclosures with rock so they can't dig out, the walls are also rock and the top is a wood frame with chicken wire. The girl likes to get on top of the rock "cave" we built for her and sun herself. The male likes his sunning rock.

The first year the female who, as I said was damaged and who might have been a pet once before, didn't seem to know how to hibernate.

On freezing nights I put her in an aquarium, the same one she was in before we took her to the vet and researched her so she wouldn't get the other turtle sick. I like to be careful about these things. I put the aquarium in the basement which is considerably cooler than the upper floors so she wouldn't going into temperature shock.

The second year we had her she figured out how to hibernate. So that is what they do when it gets cold. They dig down into the dirt. It's pretty cool!

BTW, a good thing to put in there other than natural growing things they can eat, is a cuttle bone like you put in a birds cage. It supplies needed calcium.

It's cool in Oregon about 10 months out of the year. Normally. This year has been just weird. Honestly, wild turtles around here are rare. So are most reptiles. We only have garter snakes the occasional lizard. There are just not a lot of cold blooded animals around here. I figure if ours was a climate that's livable for them, there'd be more. Ya know?

Dang!

I'm thinking heat lamps or UV ones and a heat rock, I am not a cold weather person!

We'll think about that when and if the time comes. Getting them to you doesn't seem like a huge deal, but getting their stuff with them might be an undertaking. *giggles*

BTW you do have native turtles :) The western painted turtle and the western pond turtle. They are both aquatic turtles like mine, meaning that they like to spend most of their time in fresh water ponds and don't come out much. They also hybernate when it gets too cold. Mine no longer hybernate because the the tempreture in my apt is pretty consistant. But if it did get too cold they'd figure it out again.

That's really neat. Your's might not be be comunal then. I haven't done much research on box turtles. I've done tons on mine, and I've researched ladderbacks because, again, I think they are too cute and I thought about studying them in school at one point. but never got very far into that.

It also sounds like your's are more terrestrial where mine are aquatic. I'd have to have a pond in there some where for an outdoor setting. Then they'd have to have mud to hybernate in, just not practical for a second story balcony. But they do enjoy their few hours out in the real sun, most of the time they have an atifical one.
