How do you feel GLBT people are being portrayed today on TV, the movies, & the media?

Comedic weird TV has the most in-jokes for homos - smithers is the tip of the iceberg on the Simpsons, remember the John Waters episode?

I remember mst3K being litttered with references only a queer could love.

It's very subtle and surreptitious, but someone is kidding with us, not just at us sometimes. You just know the difference.

Watching Will and Grace makes me actively ill, it's like watching straight men trying to flame. Ew.

That's because it is straight men trying to flame. ;)

The gays and lesbians are generally presented using the stereotypical images. Prancing men who can decorate and remodel, it makes me want to choke a producer. Lesbians and bisexual women are treated as a novelty, a voyeuristic autoerotic thrill for the 18-35 year old males. Bisexual men are not permitted on television other than as accidental encounters with mutual masturbation.

The only (mainstream) movie in which I liked our treatment was "Monster." Which did not deal with lesbians as a prop but as a normal exploration. I was genuinely turned on when the main characters kissed for the first time. Have I offended everyone yet?
I think maybe that's one of the reasons Lesbians and bisexual women tend to be more accepted in the mainstream media and in our culture. The fact that they're women and women in our culture are allowed to express more emotion, feelings, etc. I still think one of the reasons they're allowed more exposure is because it's fulfilling a straight man's sexual fantasy. The idea being hey, two women and he could be in the middle.

Society or our culture still doesn't want men to embrace, show feelings or even worse, Kiss. I still would like to see more men being allowed to kiss on TV. No, not just a little peck, but a full fledged embracing kiss.
Also, very true, gay men are the most stereotyped, as you stated, as "prancing" nellie fems decorating everything from bathrooms to the doghouse in the back yard. THAT really angers me. I get nauseous when I think of Will & Grace!

The movie Monster was very dsturbing and difficult to watch. Charlize Theron's performance was so real and convincing she became Wuronin! Most if not all serial killers came from an abused childhood and watching this movie still made me think of Jeffrey Dahmer or Gacy. All had very similar backgrounds or childhoods.

I think they did a good job of humanizing the characters through their relationship.

And, I can't help but notice that Chris Meloni was way hot as a bad guy on Oz, but isn't as a good guy on Law and Order.

I totally agree! Every time I see that show, I think (and sometimes say outloud), "Damn, you, Law and Order, for stealing Chris' sex appeal!!"

actually the actor who plays jack is an openly gay man.

im waiting to see alexander the great when it comes out due to the supposed bisexuality thats portrayed between some of the male actors (including colin farrel).

i started a thread about the movie "nine dead gay guys" on the general board a few weeks ago~hysterical movie with the premise being two young irishmen come to london to try to find employment and end up working as blow job hustlers in a local gay pub for older englishmen. satire in imminent as the two question thier sexuality while trying to figure out who murdered "the queen" and how to get the loot stuffed in his lovers bed.

I know. Jack and Will aren't the only gay characters on the show.

don't know if its been mentioned but "northern exposure" did amazing things with thier gay couple. shame the shows been off the air for over a decade now.

Nobody has mentioned "Six Feet Under"........and the manner in which David and Keith's relationship has been played out over the various series....thoughts?

In Australia, they are about to launch a local version of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy". This is seen by some as a blatantly commercial action capitalising on the success of the American shows over here..specially seeing Carson was bought out here to tout for the Melbourne Cup last year.

The target audience for the show over here is straight women!

"Angels In America" has finally been screened late last year - box office bomb!

What's showing and what's acceptable here is all about ratings not content!

I don't have any one feeling about it, as in my experience they've been portrayed many differnt ways. Some completely positive, some negative and some neither.

I forgot about that. i think the reason that show didn't last longer was it was too weird for a lot of people, or the network thought it was too weird anyway.

I don't think it was so much that it was "weird", rather it was way ahead of it's time.

same difference.

People thought the Pacer looked "weird", but now half the compacts on the road look like Pacers. It was quite literally thirty years ahead of its time.

Gays and lesbians are getting better treatment, but bisexuals are still depicted in a negative way.

Bisexuality does not mean that one is confused or that one needs to decide whether to be gay or straight.

Jolie is not gay; she's not straight - She's bisexual.
