How do you lower a sex drive?

Do NOT go out and get shots or pills for female birth control, which is what depo is. The chemical castration effect is permanent, so, if you changed your mind in five years, met the woman of your dreams, and wanted to have kids, you likely wouldn't be able to. Aside from the whole destroying your sex drive, it also will make your genitals look strange, and has a slew of other negative side-effects on male health, like possibly growing man-boobs and mood swings. Most doctors won't even go along with it unless you are a convicted sex offender.

If you're really thinking of using chemical assistance to diminish your sex drive, the least damaging would be anti-depressants. Most anti-depressants have a predictable side-effect of diminishing sexual appetite, and you also sound like you might need the anti-depressing effects as well. Plus, unlike taking female birth control, if you do change your mind down the road, your sexual appetite will return after a few months of going off the meds. You'll also be far likelier to find a doctor willing to prescribe it, and if you are in the UK, it'll probably all be covered.

Excellent advice.

Some people can handle abstinence, others can't. If you want to live as a contented celibate however then everything must stop. Don't masturbate, don't go in chatrooms, make personals ads or watch porn. You goal must be asexuality, to stop viewing women as sexual creatures.

Your posts outside How To lead me to believe that NippleMuncher is more astute and empathetic than you're willing to admit. The choices here are yours though. Only you can figure out what will make you happiest in the long term.

Depo-Provera shots are NOT permanent chemical castration just like they aren't permanent birth control for women, the effects will wear off in time after the injections are stopped.

Wow, u need a hug, man. Thank you for being brave enough to ask your questions.
Do you have access to therapy ? You need to have a long chat with askilled professional who will help you find some basic truths. And then you decide wheto act on them.

Also get a full blood work done, and a long conversation with your doctor. You may be suffering from missing or over present nutrients, hormones, proteins or enzymes.

Put your body at the top of your to do list. It's crying for attention, and may not be what you think.

take good care. I want to know how you choose to go forwards.

Not true at all. We naturally have concentrations of those hormones in our bodies and specifically in those high concentrations when pregnant. Men NEVER have anything approaching that much estrogen or progesterone in their systems for any reason. Pumping female hormones at levels that simulate pregnancy into a normal healthy male can and will shrink his testicles permanently, cause him to stop producing testosterone, which would require testosterone replacement therapy to normalize, and, as I already stated, will be accompanied by man boobs, weight gain, muscle loss, and mood swings.

If you really want to look into it, here is an article explaining what happens, although it's just a repeat of most of what I've already said. It's a drastic, potentially dangerous suggestion with several irreversible side effects.

Lance Armstrong is not a medical doctor...and Depo-Provera is not a birth control pill. I was on Depo Provera for almost three years, I think I know that the effects are reversable. When you get off the injections it does take awhile for your body to start producing the correct level of hormones again but it DOES HAPPEN. You only need replacement if you want to kickstart the hormones to return to natural levels....at younger ages this will happen on its own without a kickstart.

I agree with Fuckmeat that diminishing your exposure to sexual influences would be the best way to curb desire. Sort of how you don't go to bars if you're trying to quit drinking or a bakery if you're on a gluten-free diet. Take the temptations away. Approach it in the same way you would abstain from anything. When you find yourself thinking about sex, redirect your thinking. Occupy your brain with something else until the feeling passes.

Also, you could consider seeking the advice of other celibates as well. Maybe find a "celibacy sponsor" to help get you through the rough parts. I bet a sex-addiction support group (even if you're not technically a sex addict) would be a place for more helpful advice as well.

come on people!!

theres one thing that will help you. all the armed forces use this in the food to keep the guys minds on the job saltpeter. that will do the job with no lasting effects us armed forces approved for over 100 years:)

Lance Armstrong isn't a doctor, but the article wasn't written by Lance Armstrong, so who cares? It was written by Melissa Lind, who is a pharmaceutical expert and researcher, so I'm assuming she knows a lot more about this than you.

What exactly do you think is in Depo Provera? It's a shot of the same hormones in birth control pills. It is literally the same stuff in a different delivery mechanism. Maybe you should ask a few more questions next time you go to planned parenthood.

I'm sure your anecdotal evidence is compelling and all, but the medical evidence and experts say you're wrong.

Lizzy....most birth control pills contain progesterone AND estrogen. Depo-Provera does not contain estrogen at all so it isn't "the same stuff".
Research has proven Depo-Provera effective in reducing the sex drive in men and this was what the OP wanted information with.
If you got your information at Planned Parenthood, maybe therin lies the problem. I got mine from personal experience and my doctor of 15+ years.

Right, what would Planned Parenthood know about birth control? LOL

There are plenty of birth control pills that don't contain estrogen--it's a line called mini pills, and they aren't exactly rare, so yes, it is the same stuff. There aren't "studies" to cite for what you're claiming. All the evidence is precisely what you've already admitted to--anecdotal. There is no "research" on the topic because there's no market for it and a sample size of men willing to take libido killing drugs for several decades to study the long term effects seems to be a little hard to come by. Just because they know it will kill sex drive doesn't mean anyone is calling it a safe option.

Without the estrogen, of course, depo shots can reduce and leech calcium, so the OP might also be interested in knowing that your proscribed course of action also includes an increased risk for osteoporosis, again, another potentially permanent side effect.

Can't we just leave this discussion under the bridge where trolls live? The OP has been given a wealth of information that he has no intention of utilizing, which means he's only here for one purpose, attention. That fact is also supported by his posts in the personals. Please, let this dead horse remain deceased with dignity!
