How Tall Are Your Characters?

In my first, cringey story, the MC was 6'2", which I established with the extremely subtle method of having a doctor give her an exam šŸ™„

Now I mostly just assume that my main characters are usually of non-noteworthy average height, unless they're specifically shorter or taller than most people, in which case I just try to reference relative sizes.

Victoria is particularly short and petite; Rosa is taller than most men and big and muscular; Scout is as average as physically possible; their boyfriend is taller then them but shorter than Rosa, etc.

Assuming that that isn't the sole reason for the exam, I think that's actually a pretty clever way of working in a detail like that. Unlike mentioning the exact measurements completely out of the blue, the exam is a normal, fluid way of giving them since it's not like they are being pulled out of thin air.

Well, the entire first story was a doctor's exam fantasy, so I don't know if that's better or worse🤣

I don’t think I’ve used any actual measurements. It’s more about how body parts line up when I smash my characters together.

For some people (of any gender) the man must be taller than the woman. Not sure why but that's just how it is. I'm 5'7 and I used to date a guy the same height as me. When I wore a heel I was taller than him and everyone thought we were adorable together.

I have a romance story here where the female lead is a couple of inches taller than the male lead. I did this on purpose for many reasons. First, to show that they still look great together despite the odd sizing. Second, to show that she adores him despite his stature. Third, to show some of his cockiness that he has no problem walking into the room with a bird on his arm taller than him.
I've also written a couple stories with very tall women and below-average height guys. There are fun jokes you can use in the story about it. They seemed to be well-received.

I use terms like a little under six/five feet tall or a little over. Anything between is medium height.

I
It was NOT a subtle story, I wrote it almost exactly a year ago and I would definitely do it differently if I were to write it today šŸ˜…
Would rewrite every story I've written differently now. I had no idea WTF I was doing except for character psych/ emotions - which I stand by, but the stories themselves? I'd definitely redo. Hence the massive rewrite and overhaul plus novelization of Ria's Seduction, now retitled.

I have featured height as an issue more than once. In one story the MMC was only 5’5ā€ which went well with the FMC’s 4’11ā€ well. In another, the FMC liked the MMC in part because his 6’5ā€ dwarfed her 5’11ā€. Height has played an important part of my family’s life so I tend to think about it more than most, I guess.

Around average most of the time, though I've started writing a few of my female characters taller than average in some of the stories I have started recently. The long legs are calling for me at the moment.

My happy holidays story was a romance including one character with dwarfism, so he was quite a bit shorter than average (though about average for his condition). The lady was about a foot taller than him, so she wasn't particularly tall in general. Maybe I should have made her bigger
I love a good height differential, especially when the man is shorter in het pairings.
