Dixiecrat is also used as a term for the southern democrats that migrated to the GOP. Yes it was a party in 1948 - that is not the only way the term is used historically, in the media or in common vernacular.
I don't believe I have ever seen the term used unless it referred specifically to the breakaway Dems in 1948. "Southern Democrats" was widely used, but even that term is not as common as it was forty years ago. For instance, were Carter and Clinton referred to as "Southern Democrats?"
