How to: Lower appetite?

I have heard a full glass of water about 10 min before you eat, supposedly makes you feel fuller faster. They also taught us in Weight Watchers to eat off a salad plate or bread plate rather then a big dinner plate. Will keep you from overloading your plate and control portion size.

My problem is nibbling all day long, as well as large portions at meal time. I eat for the 'taste' of the food, not because I am hungry. Anyone else do that?

I time myself so that I eat small meals every 2-3hrs. And I drink lots of water. That way if I'm feeling snackish or just have the munchies in between I'm more aware that I don't really need to eat. I try to do something else to distract myself liketake a walk, read, go workout, drink water etc. For me it's defintely cut down on the mindless eating and snacking.
I've found too that eating slowly (and like someone else said eating on a smaller plate) helps me to be more aware of when I'm full so I actually don't need to finish everything on my plate.
A high protein breakfast helps me to feel fuller longer in the mornings so I'm not so prone to snacking.

Eat 6 times a day. I'm not kidding, this does work. You eat three meals and three substantial snacks each day. It raises your metabolism so that you burn more fat and supresses your appetite. It's all about equalizing your metabolism.

You didn't say that you're trying to lose weight, but, even so, some of the info in this thread might help.

EJFan and houseman know what they're talking about. :)

Any suggestions? Little secrets?

... eat.

although i would need to know about the how and why your wanting to know, but eating simple breads and sugars lowers your hunger quite fast.

also, my secret is to ingest high amounts of sugar. no this is not healthy for you. but sugars mixed with breads will fill you up and make you eat next to nothing. i eat on avarage 2 meals a day. but i drink about 6 cans of soda and 20l. bottles a day (depending)

Oh, and if you really want to lose your appetite. you can do one of three things.

1, have some one cook live Crab/fish. oh my dear god does that stink to high heven. (my mother is asian/pacific islander)
2, have some one cook live lobster. oh my dear god... not only do they stink worse then fish when cooked... they screach extreamly loud as they die. its very unsettling.

3. (again part of my mothers is fillipino) Ask one about "egg's with legs" also known as Balut

its hard to really explain it but...
take a 16-19 day old fertlized duck egg incubated. prick a hole into the top of it, then suck the contents of it out. since it developed that long it is no longer a raw egg, also, since it is only that old, it has no bones, so it still is technicly a almgomus blob.

the thought of that is making me sick to my stomach... and its a delecacy in the streets of pinoy.... yum....

Yep, That would do it!!! :p YUCK!

someone directed me to this... i'm sorry i actually came to read it. you're flat out wrong. high GI carbs, particularly sugar (the most refined carb there is) are not only unhealthy (in MOST, but not all, instances) they don't have the result you suggest. in fact, they don't have a result that even comes close to resemebling a blurred version of what you suggest.

Water helps a lot. When your water intake is greater than all of the other liquids you take in, in a 24 hour period, then you will find you eat less.

Also eat slow, chew well, give your stomach a chance to send the message, I'm full. Chop sticks are great for this if you aren't too profient with them.

There are other foods that fill you up or make you think you are full when you are not. Watermelon, other fruits and popcorn come to mind but keep in mind that if you put certain things on your pop corn that will defeat your purpose.

Fast food and soft drinks are the worst thing when you are trying to lose weight or even for good health.

Don't deny yourself anything you want, just eat less of it.

I found getting addicted to the internet helped a lot too. I refuse to get up and eat, therefore I eat less because I eat less my stomach shrinks. That means when I do eat, I can't eat as much.

Increase your exercise if you really want to lose. That will enable you to eat more too eventually. Even something like figiting has been shown to help people maintain less weight imagine doing something real exercise wise a few times a week? How much better would that be for us. I've lost at least 20 pounds that way. I'm down to a size eight pant and I can see the loss in my face! Yippie!

Fury :rose:

apples as snacks

tasty, so many kinds AND lots of fiber ... fills you up if you graize on them, and also eat one a half hour or so before meals, the fiber expands and curbs your appetite.

I swear by it.

Lots of water too of course.

Thanks for all the great ideas! Another problem I forgot to mention is that I am also diabetic, therefore really need to keep the weight down & eat right. I think I am going to start lifting dumbells or walking in place while I am on the PC, that should help ALOT! LOL I really do need to increase my H2O intake more. Keep the great ideas coming! :nana:

Lots of great tips and reminders here! I do many of them, but I'll add a couple more to the mix:

-I've found decaf green tea (caffeinated will do, but I don't want a ton of it) and extract suppresses my appetite. It also has metabolic and a ton of other health benefits, but you have to get enough EGCG in for those to happen, and most extracts won't do it. Do the research, but Source Naturals Decaf Green Tea Extract 500mg contains 175mg of EGCG per tablet, and is very inexpensive. You can drink the tea, but you need about 10 cups a day for maximum benefit, and can't be sure how much EGCG you're getting usually. It's not a miracle cure, but I've noticed significant benefits.
Edit: I just saw the diabetic part, so definitely check with your doctor if you're planning on trying this. However, I've read a fair amount that says green tea can have positive effects on blood sugar, as well as reducing the risk of illnesses/complications that result from diabetes. Click me and Google 'green tea diabetes' to learn more.

-I use the small plate/dish technique, and take more veggies or salad than I really want to eat. It also fills up a good portion of my plate so I'm left with less room for other stuff. Then, I'll eat the salad or veggies first, and since I'm a slow eater, I'm usually pretty full by the time I get to whatever else is on my plate.

-I always opt for multiple small helpings over one big one. This forces me to slow down even more, and really think, 'Am I still hungry? Do I need to get up and get more, or do I just want to eat?' If I take too much (sometimes my eyes are bigger than my stomach), I'm always willing to either wrap it up for later, or throw it away... there's no such thing as The Clean Plate Club.

-Hot foods and beverages can be helpful. Along with water, I'll drink tea or decaf coffee during the day...it makes me feel full, and kind of satifies the snacking craving. Something like decaf tea or low-cal hot cocoa is also great at night, after dinner and before bed. I go for sugary stuff at night, but with a hot drink I might have just a couple of pieces of chocolate or a cookie, versus a bunch of each (or sometimes both  ). Starting meals with, or having meals of, soup can also help you feel full and satisfied.

-Don't eat out of the container/bag/box. Take a proper portion out, put it on a plate or in something else, and go from there. When I do this, even though I know I can get more, I usually don't...not the case when I eat out of the container it comes in.

-I do really well when I limit myself to quality food: lean protein, whole grains (and high fiber and filling stuff like lowfat popcorn), fruits, and veggies. I'll prepare stuff in advance so it's just as convenient as packaged junk, or I'll eat quality packaged stuff like soy crisps. I only limit by hunger, and might graze throughout the day, but I eat a lot less overall this way and never feel hungry or lack energy.

If you are used to overeating, I would suggest starting your new eating plan by fasting. If I start to get into a rut where I'm eating more than I need to(esp. for boredom/pleasure) I will fast for a day or two. I'm borderline diabetic so I can't actually eat *nothing* or my blood sugar goes crazy, but I will drink lots of water and a few "meals" of bread/crackers/etc. The next day I'll add a bit more to those meals, and so forth until I've integrated my eating plan into it. This helps to skrink my stomach a bit and clear myself a bit mentally to start out on the right foot again.

Suggestion number 1: Totally ignore the PM I sent you recently on a different but related subject!

Suggestion 2: Check out the following website. (My cousin, a board-certified internist, says the information is medically accurate and probably quite effective)

http://www.geocities.com/~jenniferjensen/DOCUMENTS/appetite.htm

You sent me a PM? Could you let me know what the other subject was?

Yep

Marinol--obviously precisely what you DON'T want, in this context

oh yes,

either drink coca-cola, or eat Tootsie rolls/bigred gum. those leave such a bad after taste even though they taste good. of course big red kinda kills your taste buds though.

do tell how a high carb diet does not fill you up?
im not saying, eat a grain of sugar and your belly is full for the next 6 hours.

the Sweets of sugars, and fiber of bread products serve as fillers to stop a persons appitite. No, this isnt going to fill you up as if you ate a 12 course meal, but they give you a feeling of being full and stave your appitate.

its not really a medical thing, its more of a psychological thing.

and besides, carbs are not as unhealthy as most people portray. but then again, a high intake of any single thing is unhealthy.

I so can't fucking wait until EJFan gets here, though maybe if houseman were around, things would be even more entertaining. :)
