Humor. Any insight into this category?

Humor is a very personal thing. I've published one story in that category. Some people liked it, but the score isn't high, and compared to my other stories the view totals aren't that high either. But the question is, where else are you going to publish it? Just do it and have fun with it.

People say my stories are funny. I think they're merely satirical. And often people who find themselves satirised retreat into "That's funny" to cover up their own unease.

The one story I have in the "humour and satire" category is this one:
Fuck Talk
I think it's hilarious. But maybe it's just an in-joke.
What do you think?

I would be hesitant to post in the humor category. That's a lot of pressure. I think I can write funny, but not if that's the point. Humor as a category feels like a room full of people sitting there with arms crossed saying, "Okay, you're supposed to be funny, huh? Make me laugh." I'd be more inclined to post a story that might happen to garner a few chuckles into a category where people aren't necessarily looking out for that in particular.

I thought I'd share how this ended up. I did choose to post my story in the Humor category and it was the first story published there in 2024, early New Year's day. The ratings arc was familiar. A favorable initial reception, a sudden decline, then a very gradual recovery until it leveled off. Few readers, though. I believe it's still below 700.

For such an extremely short story I can't complain. It was fun to write, and I'll happily try the category again if a more substantial idea occurs to me.

It's not hard to mix sex with humour. Just look how often a guy drops his pants in the bedroom and we fall about laughing. I've only written one very short Christmas story. It did very well over the holidays coming close to a perfect 5 but once people sobered up and lost their Christmas goodwill it plummeted. Admittedly not my best work.

I'd say post your story, you won't get a great score but you'll a few people smile.

As previous posters have noted, humor is very subjective. I wrote a story about Catholic guilt and going to confession, and it did quite well. I also made fun of the fact that most readers don't read stories in the Humor & Satire category. If you would like to read it, here is the link: Coming to Know God

My suggestion would be that if you want to try Humor again, write a humorous story for a contest or challenge. You will get a lot more eyes on it. One of my reader's choice winners was a Winter Holidays entry, the other was submitted for the 750 word challenge.
