Of course, I won't actually be going that far to evacuate, but still...

I was teasing!!!

No, that's alright. You drop the kids off here. Uncle Jeff will get out the guns and the moonshine, then take them little rascals out to the woods and teach them how to kill critters. Then I'll teach them how to do a little mud bogging Ky style. We'll be havin a big time while you and Liz are doing the girl thing.

I'm sure their first question will be "Hey uncle Jeff, what's this truck doing through the window?" ;)

Then my response will be "Hold my beer and watch this".

Now the interesting question is whether it is possible to make it through to the other side of the house...

Of course without attracting the thunders of the mistress of the domain, or of the bewildered mom of 3 watching

Well, I just watched the news and weather and they don't know anything. So no help there. Nothing will be decided about evacutations till Wed pm.

Have I mentioned to anyone lately how much I want to move???

yeah, looks like nothing is clear as yet in your area. Just be prepared and take good care of yourself and your little ones, SJ. I'm keeping you all in my thoughts.

*hugs* SJ, I'd offer you shelter, but the UK is a bit far to go really ;)
But it's pretty damn hurricane free. :)

There's literally a tug-o-war over SJ here. Poor girl.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but the main dangers of hurricanes are:

1. winds
2. surges
3. landslides (because of rain)
4. flooding (because of rain)

Now the solution to me seems pretty clear:

1. build houses that can withstand strong winds (bricks should do it) and roofs that don't pop off like the top of a can
2. don't build houses too close to the sea
3. don't build houses on unstable hillsides or directly beneath unstable hillsides, stabilise hillsides with wooden supports and banks to divert landslides
4. don't build houses on floodplains

Now, of course I hope everybody stays safe - but might I mention that building ramshackle housing on floodplains in the paths of hurricanes (cf. New Orleans) is not a good idea?

Everyone wants a bit of SJ...

Whats new? ;)

I think that most of the people killed in Florida by Katrina, when she was still only a Category 1 storm, were killed when trees fell. Kind of hard to completely avoid trees. ;)

Also, when debris is whipping around at 125 mph, or 150 mph, things tend to get broken; like windows (if you don't have shutters or weren't lucky enough to have plywood lying about, or if the wind pulls the plywood off and creates a 40lb, 4 x 8 "Frisbee of Death"). And sustained winds are a whole heck of a lot different than gusts; sustain winds "erode," much like water can. Scary, scary stuff. At the very least, shingles blow off, even if the roof holds, and trees that have stood for a hundred years just can't hang on.

When you're at sea level, it complicates the not living on a flood plain, too. The water table is too high to take 15 inches of rain in half a day.

Regarding New Orleans, the original part of the city was not below sea level, it was above. And ecologically, the city's natural barriers against a hurricane have been disappearing because of certain water control practices. The storm, the city, the situation, was a case of right storm, right place, right time.

But on the subject of not understanding, it is a little difficult for me to understand why people can avoid avalanches. There are even, like, dogs roaming about with avalanche supplies strapped to their necks. ;)

Edited to add:

Luck to all!

This is a copy of the post I just left of shereads Satellite Phote thread. I'm adding it here just FYI. rf

All the computer models, see Weather Underground are showing RITA headed for Texas.

That's no comfort for the folks still digging out from Katrina. The psychiatrist from that area who stayed with us for two weeks (she's a single mom with a seven year old) is back home now and says many folks who held up under Katrina are starting to come unhinged at the possibility of another hurricane.

And those evacuees who went to Texas, especially the Houston area, most be convinced nature is pissed at them big time.

The 8:00 am EDT advisory said Rita is about 100 miles e-se of the Keys with winds up to 70 mph and moving at about 15 mph. If it keeps moving that fast and doesn't pick up much more wind speed, those folks should be in relatively good shape. But that's a big IF.

Damn, but I'm tired of reading advisories and tracking hurricanes.

And SJ's son can then build a still for his Science Fair project when he gets home again.

SJ, you can come here. We can visit Carlsbad and alien town.
Alien Town : Demi Moore's birthplace. Always figured there was something out of this world about woman in her forties looking like this.

Seriously SJ - you and your little ones be safe.

SJ, darlin', believe me I'd offer you sanctuary but I figure there's about 1800 miles between us (and believe me--I've done the math!) so i think you have options nearer to you.

But it might be worth the trip. ;)

Be safe, dearheart.

Judging from the meteorological comments and geographical references made by the likes of SJ, TxRad, Logo, Vella, et alia, it sounds like this might be the perfect time for a Lit get-together in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, maybe near Billy Bob's (The World's Largest Honky Tonk). I just checked the schedule and Buddy Guy will be there Friday night.

Even if you're not into C&W music, there's still good BBQ, level pool tables, and just think of seeing Vella and Lucky playing Debra Winger up on the back of Billy Bob's mechanical bull. Come to think of it, there's live bull riding on Friday and Saturday nights (must add a rich, aromatic bouquet to the atmosphere) if they want to try the real thing.
