I AM A WOMAN by Ann Bannon

5 STARZ BUT!!!!

This is golden oldie lezzie lit from the 50s.

The story: Laura is a blonde beauty who flees home after graduating college. She goes to New York City where she gets a clerk job, moves in with a young divorcee named Marcie, and the fun begins.

It's PEEWEE's BIG ADVENTURE on fast-forward. I read it word for word, and I'll be damned if I know how it ended. And THAT is the hallmark of lezzie lit: When all is licked and promised you don't have a clue whazzup. A gay character named Jack, and Laura's best friend, sums it up to my satisfaction: Queers are in love with love. Amen. When Marcie hurts Laura, Laura flees to another woman's bed, then returns to Marcie. She means to be faithful, but when a girl in a bar says, HEY SAILOR, its outta our hands till dawn.

There's a wee bit of girl sex, done well, but the gestalt is a blend of circus, horror movie, and first date in a car.

THE PRICE OF SALT/CAROL by Patricia Highsmith is a big ditto.

At the moment I'm assaulting boxing and girl luv, to find their souls.

Wow. Exactly one post survived. That says it all, doesn't it.

I'm going to start a separate thread on the topic of Getting Along. It's about as topical a post for this forum as can be. Apologies to the mod, because I'm already certain the thread, no matter how well intended, will degenerate into attacks and he said/she said, and thus spawn extra work.

So I guess I should apologize.

One should never post anything having to do with Helen Reddy.

I'm so ashamed.

An exercise in futility, recall Jesus of Nazareth was crucified by 1000s of nice people.

You must try The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall, and Beebo Brinker. I haven't read Beebo Brinker yet, be good to know whether I should.

(My favourite lesbian writer is Mabel Maney who writes the spoof-y Nancy Clue stories but I don't think they're quite your style.)

I just bought JOURNEY TO A WOMAN by the same author, Beebo Brinker is in it. Beebo is in I AM A WOMAN. I don't care for girls who look like The Fonz. Bannon includes plenty of narrative about those times, and its good info.

I confess I have a theory about Lesbians I intend to use in my writing about them. That is, theyre alcoholic, manic-depressive, mercurial personalities. Human roller coasters. Real lesbians are prolly as rare as unicorns, I suspect all are bisexual.

Oh? I like butches, so I will give Beebo a go when I find the box it's stored in.

I bought WELL OF LONELINESS, its a bargain.

Jack in, I AM A WOMAN, made a baby with Laura. Jack is queer. It provoked me to contemplate sexual relationships. Beth, Laura's college lover, leaves her husband to seek Laura. Beth confirms she liked sex with the husband until they got married. And that revelation made me wonder what women get from sex. Beth collides with Beebo in JOURNEY TO A WOMAN.

Yeah, it's futile. But there's literally nothing to lose. If AH is terminally rabid, eventually I'll decide the occasional useful post isn't worth the rest. I've got no horse in any races here. But if anything good comes out of it, yay me and yay us all.

If that is what you think will occur with the thread, why are you starting it?

In grad school we were encouraged to let it all out, all my clinical perfessers were Fritz Perls grads. Perls wasn't hostile but he was clear and direct to a painful degree. I've said to many patients, I'M BORED LISTENING TO YOU. But them was the old days.

I do that, people start talking, I listen, but then they keep talking and keep talking and then I 'go away' and just stare and eventually they ask if I'm paying attention and I say no.
