I am Music

Celebrating my heritage(s)

This is my European one. I think I'm too old for the soul patch, though.

An' here's my Seattle one. Yes, God did play guitar: left-handed, strung upside down.

OK, I confess. I have a major finger envy thing going on with Jimi. Guy had fingers as long as my arms. If you've ever tried to play guitar, you'd know where I'm coming from.

Yeah, yeah. Artist, too. First things first.

Well if you're gonna go all ethnic-like on us, how bout a little Klezmer? Let my people go. . . and sing!

PS eagleyez has a soul patch and he's way older than that kid in your video. ee also has huge (and I do mean huge) hands and very long fingers, which he says is why he ended up a bass player. :)

What I really like about that clip is how it ain't just jazz that is improvisation. It's very cool to see Itzhak Perlman groovin' with the Klezmer folks, making it up as he goes along.

Oh, yeah. Soul patch. My hair's gone so gray that if I had one it would look like cigar ash had settled below my lip. Not 'zactly the look I is tryin' for.

I was looking for one of those Don Ellis things where the music is based on some Bulgarian folksong and has some crazy meter like 13/18 or something, but no luck. Guy died too early, I think. So, we being ethnic tonight, y'all have to settle for Doc Watson. This vid shows by implication that it ain't just the fretboard hand doin' it. And, yeah, he is doing it by feel.

We call that practice.

My fingers are long enough to put CDs in the player. Best I can do. :)

Hey, T! They're all good, but that first one is awesome. Dare I say "rockabilly" via George Jones and crossed with Bill Haley?

And, hey. Is that really a double-neck electric guitar/mandolin? I want one. Bad.

OK, OK, hang on a minute. I am searching for things. Digging around in YouTube's attic. Back in a few.

Counteroffensive. (I've been reading Freeman Dyson's Weapons and Hope. Cut me some slack, OK?)

So. Béla Fleck:
  • Hey, if you're like me, the whole concept of jazz banjo is like so weird as to be incomprehensible. Fine. Not jazz. Whatever. It's coolness, whateveryersay.
  • This one is actually most interesting to me because of the synthesized bassoon. That just seems so wrong. So wrong.
  • This is so acoustic you'd think Béla might think he's Segovia. Well, the guy might be at that. For the banjo, anyway. Not a lot of applicants.
Ach! Whatever. Carry on. :)

Girls Like Me

Artist or band: Mary Chapin Carpenter
-----------------------------------------------
Girls like me aren't hard to find
We grow like roses on the vine
We wear our hearts on our sleeves
You probably know a girl like me.

We live alone and in our heads
We eat standing up or in our beds
Guilt and fear merge easily
In the quiet souls of girls like me

And loneliness is like a cold,
Common and no cure we're told
We take to bed per chance to dream
In the blue light of the TV screen.

Girls like me like summer light
And cold beer on a summer night
And boys who aren't afraid of what they see
Inside the eyes of girls like me

And hopefulness is like a drug
It makes a girl believe in love
And if somehow you love us back
You think there's something wrong with that

Girls like me aren't hard to trust
Your deepest secret's safe with us
And when it's time to set you free
You can always count on girls like me

It's good to know a girl like me
You used to love a girl like me

Lady

I'm sorry, this is the only "Lady " in my life.

Anyway, woke up this morning (too early!) in this mood

But now we're back to here (ooh, the neighbors are having a row...I think Mike's been put out again--he's in the courtyard screaming something vile. Drunk, obviously. Did the Cardinals lose?)

I'm thinking of the Fugees now.

This is a great Wyclef song.
Enjoy, while you do your best not to dance suggestively.

Speaking of dating comely bass players, I'd take Paz Lenchantin out for buffalo wings in a heartbeat.

Here she is playing with a great band: Entrance .
How about comely young Red Guards?

This video is a hoot. It's like Balanchine crossed with Busby Berkeley, with music thrown in by Bikini Kill.

Chiang Ching, swan of my heart!
Heed the desire of our great People!
Bring Mao's Revolution to our Art!

My ex and I used to go to a New Year's Eve party that was thrown by a friend of ours who has a record shop: vinyl and cds. A lot of his customers were at the party, and he'd have an award ceremony every year. And every year, my ex would win the award for "Buys the most records/cds that nobody else will buy." You kind of remind me of him (but only in your eclectic musical tastes lol).

Are you telling me that there aren't that many people who own a recording of Alvin Lucier's Music for Solo Performer? What a shame. It's happenin' stuff.

Midnight Blue

Song: Midnight Blue (3:54)
By: Lou Gramm
Words/Music Written By: L. Gramm/B. Turgon

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ain't got no regrets
And I ain't losin' track
Of which way I'm going
Ain't gonna double back
Don't want no misplay
Put on no display
An angel? no!
But I know my way
I used follow
Yeah, that's true
But my following days are over
Now I just gotta follow through
I remember what my father said
He said "Son, life is simple"
It's either cherry red or...
CHORUS:
Midnight Blue...
Oh...
Midnight Blue...
Oh...
You were the restless one
And you did not care
That I was the trouble boy
Lookin' for a double dare
I won't apologize for
The things I've done and said
But when I win your heart,
I'm gonna paint it cherry red
I don't want to talk about it
What you do to me
I can't live without it
And you might think that
It's much too soon
For us to go this far
Into the...
CHORUS:
Things could be different
But that'd be a shame, 'cause
I'm the one who could feel the sun
Right in the pouring rain
I won't say where
And I don't know when
But soon there's gonna come a day
I'll be back again
Yeah, I'll be back for you
You see, I'm saving up my love
CHORUS:

Today, I feel like the best band in the Universe, in two parts:

Part I : Take me there, you magnificent Canadians
Part II : Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: I have arrived
