Why so much of Folia?

Well, to me it is a good way to start understanding European music. It is not by accident that so many major or lesser known European composers decided to write variations on this theme.
It contains much of the essence of functional harmonic frame work for composition and improvisation in a minor key.
Now a days this seems to be well understood and the "theme" stands as a basic element of our musical culture meriting its own web site.

This is a famous piece written more likely for the Milanese six course mandolin rather than the modern four course Neapolitan one, and definitely the tutti scored for bowed strings by Vivaldi, but it does not sound bad for a mandolin orchestra either. The role of a conductor for such pieces I find superficial.

A nice piece for a Sunday afternoon, this most famous of all 20th century classical guitar concertos played live by one of the greatest guitarist in the world.
There seems to be a problem with the tuning of the instrument, especially in the third movement but John as always manages to get the message through!
