I was on the bus coming home when a mother and daughter who had been sitting behind me walked down to the door to get off. As they passed me the little girl (about 6 years old I'd judge) said in a confused tone of voice "But I'm English mum...". Her mother replied in a fairly abrupt tone, "Yes but you're not English like...". I suddenly felt a wave of sadness come over me. Mother and daughter were black and I had instant visions of an innocent child being brainwashed by a prejudiced mother. I hadn't heard the conversation leading up to what I did hear and I only heard those few words as they passed me. But what hit home was the little girl's confusion.
We do tend to pride ourselves in the UK about our multi racial society (without turning a blind eye to the reality of life) but that girl's confusion made me very sad indeed.
