I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

Kayaking this weekend was my go-to activity. Tried a squirt boat for the first time, which is fun but definitely not made for lake paddling. However, it did require me to paddle twice as hard to keep up with the other boats so I managed to slip in a good bit of training into an otherwise leisurely camping trip. :D

I almost hate to ask, but what is a squirt boat?

heh... he should come to my pilates class. at 45 I'm the youngest there by about 20 years. I so do NOT look pretentious as I'm screaming in agony as I contort my body.

If those pictures are any kind of recent, you looked damned good for 45.

aww thank you! it helps that himself is a photographer, but despite being fairly slender, I'm hopelessly unfit. the pilates is pretty amazing though. it's the posture really that makes the difference. like wearing an invisible corset.

Cycle 5, Wave A
Bench press day

95x5
120x5
145x3 Warm-ups done
165x5
1805x5
205x11 Rep calc says 280#

Did some supported pull-ups and push-ups after. Yay for actually doing assistance work!

Today was rough. The AC was having issues last night and it was stupidly hot. We had two huge fans hitting the bed and I was still up until almost 3am trying to get to sleep. And once I did, I woke up every hour or and had to fight to get back to sleep. I did my first three sets on the bench with my eyes closed because I was so damned exhausted.

Still, I did okay. I can't complain about my performance, as my mental goal was ten reps, and I got eleven. I really, really ran out of gas on the push-ups though. My last set was two. Yes, TWO. Then I was face-down on the concrete wondering where three was.

"Squirt boat" is slang.

Here are some regular kayaks...

Here's a "squirt boat"...

This style of kayak is not designed for cruising, it is designed specifically for playing in whitewater. It's highly maneuverable, which is awesome for riding and surfing the waves but not so great for long, scenic paddles.

Ah, okay. After I posted I wondered if it might be the short boats I'd been seeing around here lately. There's apparently a fair amount of kayaking going on in this region, though there's no real whitewater that I know of.

Kayaking looks like a load of fun. I haven't gotten into it primarily because I spend enough coin on biking and lifting gear that the idea of buying a kayak seems excessive.

I've never owned a kayak...just have lots of generous friends who own them. ;)

That said, it is super fun and a great outdoor activity. I will buy one when the budget allows. L used to instruct whitewater kayaking, so I get free lessons...whether I want them or not, lol.

See, none of my friends have kayaks. I need new friends.

The combat roll is so frikken cool.

Hey, I recognize those. I went across the northern San Fransico bay in one. Probably wasn't the premier place for my introduction to kayaking, but it was still fun.

Woohoo I got my gold body magic certificate from slimming world tonight. I got it for 8 weeks of doing 2.5 hours exercise a week :D Oh and lost half a pound this week, not alot, but given that I've had chinese and McDs this week, I was chuffed

Soreness is a sign you did something right earlier. Constant pain is a sign you were trying to do something right, but didn't quite get it right earlier. ;)

Things that help with muscle soreness, aside from good post-workout nutrition, are to lightly exercise the affected muscles again to help distribute the lactic acid better, stretching or a good massage. I really must recommend "wet heat"; if you can stretch in the shower, do so. I used to have an incredibly sore back and knees (an end result of exercising on a body that does a lot of rucksack-ing around), stretching in the shower helped enormously.

Oh, I'm well aware. I've been doing this a few years now. Just making the comment because it is especially intense today. Usually it is just stiffness and mild soreness. Today it is full-on ow.

The thing that tends to help me best is recovery exercise, ie light movement. When I do legs, easy biking the next day or so is a very good thing. I've not found similar movements for upper body, unfortunately, and that is what is hurting right now.

Ah, good to hear you've been doing it for a while. Upper body is difficult, I agree: you may very well have to reduce the weight you use by half and do a single half-set to alleviate some of that. By the by, I've seen your ropework. Outstanding stuff.

104 pages in, the first half of this thread title is kind of ironic. :)

Oh, and on topic, I will be playing tennis tonight. Hopefully singles, as I would love a good cardio session.

I am officially losing my fucking mind.

Still feels like I've been kicked in the ribs by a girl gang - no hope of fitness shit.

Today we were gonna go to multnomah falls, but instead we decided to hike up to horsetail falls. It was a three hour hike with three children, a baby, and a teenager. Best part? I HELD MY OWN!! :nana: Granted, I only had the baby a few times, and then only cause he was demanding me, but I not only held my own, but was able to take the baby a few times. :nana:

That said, I'm going to try and cut sugar out of my diet tomorrow. This is not something I've succeeded at more than once. I will have a headache for at least three days, be sleepy, and a bitch on wheels, but K says he's willing to handle all that AND to not have any desert until I stop craving sweets.

Wish me luck. Pray for the health and well being of my children.

Nice!

How do you plan to cut sugar from your diet? Do you mean by the way of added and refined sugars, or are you doing more of a low carb/diabetic diet?

I actually started eating pasta, and bread again, but it's gluten free.(Wheat/gluten allergies as well as colon cancer run in my family, so I'm trying to be proactive) I wish my veggie burgers were gluten free.:(

I'm diabetic. And I have crohns disease, so I'm lactose and gluten intolerant. And, evidently, I have high cholesterol. Yay me. lol I do three days with almost no carbs at all, then I slowly add in carbs until I figure out what works for me. I've only ever made it to day three once, mostly cause I'm a night eater. (I sleep walk and when I sleep walk, I eat.)

Could you make your own veggie burgers?

ETA: I found these recipes for veggie burgers:

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/veggieburgerrecipes/tp/bestburgers.htm

If the recipe includes anything with gluten you can switch that part to a gluten free alternative.

Actually, I could probably just do some push-ups. Same basic movement and won't be super hard. I should've thought of this earlier.

And thanks for the comments on the rope!

Thank you! Those look awesome!

I bet I could even do a quick mixture with some latke mix and beans. Ohhh the possibilities!

According to the trainer, I kicked arse (or ass if you're American ;) ) in boxing last night. Class was an odd number so I partnered her. It was great to be able to punch as hard as I liked! I had a ball :D

Oh - I had to laugh at the Middle Eastern guy with all the muscles (wearing a singlet to show them all off too) who was sweating up a storm and breathing really hard....and I was keeping up with him :D

Getting back into it now that I have more time.

I was so soar. I'm not use to it cause I rarely get soar when working out routinely. But my back's still strong. My backs got my back, it's never let me down.

Hmm, maybe that's why I climb so much.
Damn forearms though, those guys are constantly like, "fuck this, we quite"

Cycle 5, Wave A
Deadlift day

165x5
210x5
250x3 warm-ups done
270x5
315x5
355x.... 5, fuck

I got three up and felt BAD. Four was terrible, and I had to reset at the bottom. I got five up and I felt like I was going to pass out and puke on the way down.

Our AC has been screwed up recently, and a friend of mine what does AC suggested that I leave it off overnight and then try to charge it again in the morning. So I did, and it meant I was sweltering hot from the time I went to bed until, well, I still am. And I feel nauseous as hell as a result. I probably shouldn't have lifted today, but I've missed a few recently, and I'm not willing to bitch out for something like being hot.

Supposedly the AC is working better now (I'm still in the garage), so I'm going to go upstairs and try to lower my core temp.

Thank you! Those look awesome!

You're welcome. Several of them looked delicious.

Now I just gotta talk the redneck I'm married to into eating veggie burgers. And while I'm at it, I think I'll fly!

Week one of my "diet," all I wanted was white carbs and sugar, but I stuck to it and I'm through it. Replacing them with whole grain/multigrain carbs is really good for you. It helps with cholesterol too. So does ruby red grapefruit, apparently.

Quinoa is a great complex carb with a lot of amino acids and is gluten free. Just rinse it off really well because it has a coating of saponin, a natural soap.

Today I found out that my nausea is from gallstones - I have two - and that my "back problem" has something to do with my soft tissue everywhere hurting. They've switched me to a new med. The guy kept grabbing me places where it hurt. I don't understand exactly what it is, but if it works I really don't give a fuck either. He said I could stop taking the NSAID and there's like, six options to try, so not being able to name it is negligible. But he did say it was important for me to lose some more weight. It's kind of hard with being nauseous, though. I don't want to eat every two hours.
