I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

I went back to the gym today, after near 2 months off.

I'd booked a refresher with a trainer, as a kick in the pants to get me going again, boost the confidence etc.

I told her it'd been 7 weeks since I'd done anything and she simply said 'that's not so bad, and anyway, you're here now, welcome back.'

And my anxiety vanished in a poof. The last gym I went to, they hassled me so much about an extended break, I ended up quitting entirely.

I only need to lose 15 more kilos to get to my goal. I can totally do this.

That's inspiring! You CAN totally do it.

*dusts off the thread*

I've lost 25lbs in about 15 weeks.

But here's why the scale shouldn't be an end-all, be-all. I've lost almost two pounds this week even though I've not stepped foot in the gym the whole week, didn't have power for three days and ate Chinese, pizza, and sweet potato fries during that time and had prepared store bought lunches instead of being able to make my own.

This is my week of rest. I decided to take the entire week off from the gym just to rest up. I'm gonna hit it hard next week.

I never really had any short term goals like lose X amount of weight. My only goal is a lifelong goal of going to the gym as much as I can for the rest of my life. I want to be healthy and in shape well into old age.

*helps dust off the thread*

I fished for 5 hours yesterday. Does that count as a workout? My arms are screaming YES!

Diet time again.

Down 6lbs.

When you're a big dude, it's dead easy to drop weight initially. Let's see if it sticks.

Quit smoking in May....

gained 7 lbs.

WTF??

Man, I need to get moving, but I have a semi-sedentary job, so the morning walks just aren't cutting it! :(

Come on H, you can do it. No "if", OK?

(I'm cheering you on over here)

The best part about it is that Diet Brain has fully kicked in. It's like this bizarre willpower switchover. Sweets? Nah, not interested. Overly fatty foods? Nope, do not want. Veggies? MMmmmmm, yes, please.

I wish I could access this sort of headspace more easily. It's weird, as hunger has to get to the point where other people can hear my stomach rumbling before I'm really distracted by it.

I'm assuming it's a temporary insanity. I mean, honestly, who has cravings for broccoli and olive oil? It's not natural.

Tell yourself that this is normal, that it's the other state that's insane. Shift that paradigm!!! Shift it DAMNIT!!!

Cod, I LOVE broccoli. Love.:heart:

Make me three for loving broccoli! I love it lightly steamed with with lemon juice on it. YUM!

I weighed myself the other day, still under 70kg (69.7 to be exact) :)

The pump class has upped the ante, lots of "bottom halves" in squats and lunges so I am feeling it the next day  On the upside my bum is looking good in my new jeans! :D

Shoulder is feeling good since I started doing chest presses on the floor instead of a bench, and took a couple of kilos off the bar when I did the clean and press. No more than 5kg lifted overhead the doc said. I think I'll stick with doing this for another few weeks. At least I can still work out even if it's with slightly lighter weights.

It's taking less effort to talk myself into going to the gym now.

And although I still have moments where I'm halfway through (especially during Step class) and I think I can't keep going, I manage to stick with it.

And a lot of the time I'm actually enjoying myself, despite the feeling sore and tired!:eek:

I tried Step, it didn't do my knees any good. Even with elastic supports  Ditto BodyAttack. Too much high impact, and my hips do not like being swung outward

I can do BodyCombat and spin, and I love boxing. I figure that gives me enough of a cardio workout. ;)

My knees are awesome either, so there's still some things I don't do, particularly lunges, and the jumping type stuff. I still manage to get a solidly high heart rate up just stepping/jogging when others are bouncing, so I figure it's all good.

And the results are speaking for themselves so I'm happy. I'm in a proper, actual size 18 now. No more plus size range! And I had to take my first batch of new uniform stuff from March in for alterations because it was so big as to look ridiculous now! :D

Yay go Lizzie! :D
When others are doing scissor legs or jumping jacks I just step on the spot - at least I am still moving right? ;)

Funnily enough squats and lunges are fine. The only thing I had problems in the beginning re lunges was keeping my balance. I started out holding a weight bar upright in front of me to steady myself  I've now graduated to 4kg on the bar across my shoulders (about 5kg total). I squat with 10kg on the bar. Not bad for a granny-to-be (in about 10 weeks  ).

I think for me, it depends on the weight distribution. If I concentrate on my technique properly with squats, most of my weight seems to be to the back, cos I stick my ass way out, and that seems to take the pressure off my knees. With lunges, it's more forward, and I really feel it.

And yup, agreed, doesn't matter what you do, so long as you're moving!

:D

If I eliminate the processed foods as much as possible, my brain starts to not want them. As much. But if I have a killer week and start eating Doritos, I just want... more Doritos. And more. And more.

Mmmmm.... cheesy dopamine.

This is me and carbs. If I stay away from them, I have no desire for them. I actually feel so much better when I keep them at a minimum.

If I do eat them, watch out because I become this

Note to self: yoga does not work with
a) hypermobile joints
b) joints that have been operated in the recent months.

I've been walking a lot lately and really enjoyed it. Buying proper shoes made all the difference!

There is like a real diet insanity that I've experienced. I mean, a strict diet can inspire a certain kind of OCD. People have written about this with weight watchers. Like you eventually kinda get off on the whole tracking points thing.

I also felt a little weird when I totally cut carbs. Like if I had a piece of bread I would go bananas.

This is the first time ever I have not felt this way. I don't really crave anything.

Question for all of you -- were you brought up with healthy foods? I have never craved a dorito in my life. I definitely feel like my "natural" or whatever state is eating food that's good for you. I think maybe it's tougher if you're unlearning a lifetime of bad habits.

I don't know if they were healthy foods, they were just standard. We did eat a lot of meat though, my father was a butcher at the time.

It was the 80s, and I think we ate fairly balanced, but probably too low GI/too many carbs. We didn't eat much junk food, fish and chips was once a week, and we didn't have McDonald's/KFC etc in town, so that stuff was a very rare treat when we went to the city.

Snacks like cake, chips etc were fairly strictly monitored, just to make them last. When you have 4 kids, 2 packs of things only lasts a couple of days at most.

We ate fairly plainly really. I let my self control get away from me in my teen years, and *that's* the bad habit I'm unlearning.

I wouldn't say that it was healthy or unhealthy. Growing up dinner consisted of meat, potatoes and vegetables. That is not how I eat now. Compared to now, I did eat more carbs growing up. My taste in food has changed and I don't eat a lot of the things I did when I was younger.

I agree that changing bad habits does make it tougher. I don't normally crave carbs. My issue is if I don't keep them at a minimum, then I want more. I am not a nutritionist, so I can't say what is exactly going on, but I know the less carbs I eat, the better I feel.

Laughably, I was raised on a fried meat, mashed potatoes, and a canned vegetable every night. Twice a week was spaghetti & meatballs, and Sunday was a roast - with said mashed potatoes and a canned veggie.

Now I wouldn't eat a canned veggie to save my life, (ok, to save my LIFE....), mashed are on Thanksgiving only, and FRIED MEAT?? Sorry, no thank you! I was just remarking to S. the other night, how as a kid, fresh veggies SUCKED! Can't imagine anything else these days!

I was brought up on healthy food. Having to live in the dorms for 4 years in college ruined it. Well, that and being on Depo for three years, which is what caused me to gain all this weight in the first place. There was no stove, of course, and only a mini-fridge and a microwave to "cook" with. Even toasters were banned. The scholarship I had required me to live on campus, so I didn't have a choice. There was lots of fast food and junk food at that point in my life, and I'm still paying for it now.

When Sir lived alone He used to eat a lot of pre-prepared meals (heat and eat stuff). Now I'm here I try to cook something most nights but if I'm at the gym He will have a sandwich for dinner (usually some form of deli meat, tomato, cheese and lettuce). I usually have a lamb chop or fish fillet with potato and mixed veges and an egg (love dipping the potato in the yolk  ).

Last night I made rissoles (beef mince, breadcrumbs, onion, a sprinkle of dried mixed herbs, a little salt & pepper and an egg to mix), served with mashed potato and mixed vegetables. I use frozen veg, it keeps and there's no waste, and it's probably fresher than the vegetables that have been sitting in the supermarket.

Sir's blood results are a lot better since He got away from the microwave ready meals :)
