I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

I have allergies year-round, but I struggle way more with asthma when it's cold outside. Maybe when it warms up, you won't have nearly the issues with it. *Crosses fingers*

As for me, I'm struggling with dehydration issues. I have no idea what it is--the heat in this house, me just not taking in enough liquids, or what--, but I'm having a hard time. I'm thirsty all the time. I have a headache that Won't. Go. Away. And it gets worse when I eat.

I drink and drink, and it seems that only sports drinks really kill the thirst, but a gallon or two of those a day (with all the sugar in them) is probably not the healthiest thing. Water won't touch it. Not to mention, the water here is just...ew. Even with a Brita filter, it's BAD.

I wondered if I'd become diabetic, so I bought one of the cheap things to check my blood sugar. Both my fasting and my post-meal levels are well within the normal range, so I have no idea why I'm having such a hard time here.

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary, so that can't be the reason. But I've been struggling for several weeks with this crap, and I'm sick of it.

Are you drinking premixed sports drinks or mix-yourself?

WORLD of diff in the formulation.

You can get powdered gatorade and something else I can't remember the name of lyte something or electro something - through REI - I mix these *very* watered down and they're helpful. Spares calories, sugars, and more hydrating.

Keroin, have you ever come across the Buteyko Method? I bought a book about by Alexander Stalmatski (got it from Amazon) and it turned my life around. I went from being on huge doses of inhaled steroids and lots and LOTS of salbutamol to being drug-free (and asthma-attack-free) within weeks, just from following the advice in the book, and I have stayed that way for (ooh, must be around) 5-6 years now. I am a very allergic person and my asthma was allergic.

Slimming World weigh-in tonight and I am cautiously optimistic.

Interesting concept. I am big on nasal breathing, particularly while exercising - I wrote a big spiel about it here, many moons ago. The asthma is mild, thankfully, the allergies are what kick my ass most...and they're environmental. Like I said, during my two years in Aitutaki, they disappeared completely.

The doc usually gives me two inhalers, one is an everyday deal, which I use during times like these, the other is for those hacking-like-an-octogenarian moments. My usage of both fluctuates but I try to stay off them as much as possible.

They do work, I'm just stubborn about prescription meds. I sure did like my two years of trouble-free breathing and clear nasal passages, though. *SIGH*

Good luck with the weigh in!

Yet AGAIN, a 1.5 pound loss at Slimming World. I am pee'd off. The other women, who I know do a lot less exercise than I do, and who seem to eat as least as much as I do, routinely lose 3-4 pounds a week. I know I have a low-functioning thyroid, but this is getting beyond a joke.

I'd just better have been gaining muscle these last two weeks! That'd better be the explanation!!!!!!!!

It's not a contest. Besides, I think you are better off losing 1 to 2 pounds a week.

Are they heavier than you or did they come in heavier than you? I know that at my max weight it was coming off faster (going back to when this was a diet and not forced starvation) than once I got into the middle of the cascade, at which it was 1-1.5 per week.

As WD said, that's a very reasonable and healthy loss rate.

I know it's hard to be patient about appearance changes you want. I find that buying one new clothing item I like that fits RIGHT NOW helps my mood.

Sounds like not water, but electrolytes. Sports drinks are sports drinks because of the sugar, sure, but also because of the salt and potassium. Do you have issues with muscle cramps too?

I would personally try two things. First, you can get Propel (sugar-free gatorade) or SmartWater (water with electrolytes) and that should be the sports drink sans loads of sugar. You can also hit any place that sells vitamins and look for potassium citrate caps. I take them when it is hot outside and I'm sweating a lot, and they help kill the headache that Won't. Go. Away.

When I made ghetto gatorade, it was basically a teaspoon or two of salt and four potassium citrate caps in a cup of water, microwaved til the caps and salt dissolve. Then add the cup to a pitcher of crystal light or sugar-free kool-aid (preferably something citrus, as the tang hides the salt and potassium whang). That was the BEST sports drink ever for the dead of summer.

The cramps just started last night, even though the being thirsty thing has gone on for awhile. It's the headaches that kill me. I can take painkillers for them, and they'll stop for a little while. But once the meds wear off, the headache is back with a vengeance, AND the stupid painkillers seem to dehydrate me more. :(

I tried the sugar-free Powerades. They're tolerable, but they're SO sweet. Why is it that almost all artificially sweetened drinks are sickeningly sweet? It's like they're trying to make up for the lack of sugar by making it even sweeter than the drinks that actually have sugar in them.

I may have to try your ghetto Gatorade recipe. Making things by the pitcher HAS to be cheaper than buying real Gatorade by the bottle.

Yep, I've been drinking the premixed ones. And I was totally not smart enough to think of using the powdered kind and mixing my own. Thanks!

The scale is a harsh Mistress. If I can get down to 31 jeans then great. And if 33 jeans start getting uncomfortable I'll have to make changes. If I look at it that way then why should I even bother to weigh myself?

Now if you have plenty to lose then weighing once a week is probably productive. But they'll come a time when your body will tell you the party is over and you might gain 5 pounds. If you put too much stock in the weekly weigh in you'll just fall apart and gain it all back. Or you can stick with it and your body will figure out it's not starving and start losing again.

I feel good if for no other reason that longer days and warmer weather is on the way. Not as soon as I'd like according to Yahoo.

Wait, you lost weight, and you're complaining?

Go back a few pages and read the posts where you'd followed along and gained weight anyway.

Yeah, I'm thinking more and more that it sounds like electrolyte issues. How do salty things taste right now?

WAY cheaper. Stupendously so. And, honestly, it worked far better for me than gatorade did. You just have to play with salt amount to get a level you can tolerate.

Salty things taste fabulous, but that's pretty much an everyday thing for me, not solely limited to when I feel funny. ;)

Yep, probably going to give this a go, then. You say just salt and potassium citrate?

I've noticed the last few days a distinct ache in my kidney region on both sides of my back. It's not like the pain of a kidney infection or anything, but I'm wondering if the dehydration/electrolyte issue is putting an extra strain on them or something.

Tough night at the gym but a wonderful dinner to make up for it.

Made a grilled tofu thingy that was surprisingly, fucking awesome. Also a new salad dressing - lime sesame...num, num, num.

The salad dressing is healthy and delicious, I'll have to put the recipe up here when I'm more awake.

When I need salt I taste it less and less, which means I add more and more.

Yup, that's it. I use potassium citrate because it seems to have the best absorption (from what I've read). Four tabs (99mg each) and around a half teaspoon of salt to start with. Add more depending on your taste. Again, citrusy flavours and tangy stuff (I love raspberry) hide the potassium wang well. I've got a friend that swears by peach tea, but I think that stuff tastes like shit even unmodified.

Kidneys go into overdrive, yeah. Extreme dehydration can cause kidney damage, even kidney failure.

I'm going to stop bitching about the weather. I've got nine months of great weather coming. November is warmer than March on average. And even the dog days of July and August I don't complain about because there is the mornings and the evenings. Just don't go out in the midday sun if you can help it.

I do hope this week is the last hard freeze so I can get some early things in the garden like lettuce and greens. And start tomatoes inside.

Pardon me...

for interrupting. I lurk on this thread occasionally because I'm a bit of a fitness nut (okay, I'm a CPT and a Pilates instructor, but w/e) BUT...

I just wanted to ask if you've ever tried allergy shots for your environmental allergies? They're usually covered by insurance and provide amazing relief. (FYI, not tequila or whiskey...the kind that go in your arm.)

Good luck!

The problem I found with assisted pull ups is either it makes them ridiculously easy or you feel like you are getting no help at all. But I did get one unassisted. So that's a start. Just have to keep working at it.

Oh, but I like tequila! LOL.

Did I mention my fear of needles, BTW?

No I haven't. I'm seeing my doc on Thursday, so I'll be sure to discuss it with him. Thanks for popping in! One of my best friends from highschool was a pilates instructor for years. Great stuff, that.

You should lurk less and post more ;)

I'd also try that bee pollen stuff. It worked great for my cousins, did squat for me. Of course, now we know that's because I ALSO have non allergic rhinitis. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate doctors?

Also, I have daily asthma attacks, and I get through them with meditative breathing (I can't always meditate, like when I'm driving) but I can do the deep careful breathing. I only have to use my inhaler once or twice a year, and that's normally due to campfire smoke.

Today should've been Bench Day, but everybody is sick. Well, LB's not sick, but he doesn't want to chance catching anything, so he's not here. I'm not badly sick, I just feel like crap. No real symptoms. I was gonna lift anyway, but I figured, y'know, better to rest. Try to get not-sick.

Being mature sucks.

I made it, and it's not bad. It's the Crystal Light pink lemonade. I'm drinking some right now. :) Thanks!

I love grilled tofu, though I've never grilled it myself. Did you marinade it at all?

Awesome leg workout. Day three of a new creatine cycle. I'll get off of it in 4 weeks and hopefully Spring will be here and I can lose some more weight. I did get in two treadmill 30 minute workouts this week and maybe I can do a chilly bike ride on Sunday. Plan a nice easy walk on Saturday for an hour. Haven't found my deadlift max yet but did 185 today. 100 situps in the weighted chair and three sets in the lower back chair where you push back in the other direction today. I need to mix in other ab work as well on legs day.

Still sick, but, hell, LB showed up anyway. I'm not gonna let him lift and not do it.

Yeah, I know, smart. Whatever.

BENCH DAY, Cycle 2 Wave B

Rep calc says 273# Yeah right. Still, it was a good effort.

Pull-downs with L+M bands, 1x10, 1x8

I choked the bands once around the bar to increase the resistance. Wow, did it ever.

Decided not to do push-ups today. I suck, I know. Totally ran outta gas on that last set of pull-downs and had no desire to eat concrete when my tris decided to give out.

Hopefully this weekend will clear up some of this shit.

I love grilled tofu, though I've never grilled it myself. Did you marinade it at all?

I marinated it for about 3 hours in Braggs, rice vinegar, sesame oil and sweet Thai chilli sauce. Then before cooking, I dipped it in a mixture of cornstarch and water then coated it in Japanese panko breadcrumbs. Cooked for about 2 min per side in a hot skillet and yum, yum, yum!

I also just made some wheat and sugar free breakfast bars the other day, which are really quite good but I would alter the recipe slightly next time.

Guess I should have gone for 225 on the bench since I did 205 twice without much effort. There is always next week. Then I did dumbbell presses ending with 70 x 4. 36 dips and some close grips. I'll do dumbbells for another two weeks then go back to bench pressing. Pull ups and the smaller muscles tomorrow.

I am still trying to figure out why I do so well under the bar when I'm not feeling well. It's weird.
