I miss the fitness threads and the fitness Doms!

Thanks Homburg and Keroin. :rose::rose:

I feel great - today was SUCH a fabbo confirmation that sticking to the diet and the walking plan is me being nice to myself. I've been fitting into smaller clothes lately and that's been great.... but being able to do that hike today beats ANY clothes-related progress :D

Yet another softball season comes, and it's yet another where I can't fucking play. :(

Why, oh, WHY didn't I get my shoulder put back together before I got dropped off my health insurance? By the time I can afford either the insurance or the surgery, I'll be too old to ever play again. :(

I did a nine-mile, gradient-rich hike in the mountains today.

And in the course of doing that I realised I am TONS fitter than I was just a couple of months ago. Being significantly lighter didn't hurt either.

It was a glorious hike, in beautiful, beautiful scenery, under a perfect blue sky. Near-freezing temperatures (actually freezing in the shade) and totally still air.

I am so lucky to live where I do. And I am so pleased about my increasing ability to enjoy the mountains here.

Just sitting smugly now imagining how much I'm gonna ROCK those mountains when I've lost the 40 pounds I still need to lose :D:D

I feel good.

You should feel good. I bet if someone told you 12 months ago you'd be hiking 9 miles in the mountains you would have laughed. Keep it up and stay healthy and don't worry so much about the numbers. :)

Not as awesome as catty's news, but I took the kids for a half an hour walk. At the end they were whining 'mama? will you carry me?' and I was still going strong. I remember when walking to the end of my driveway had me out of breath and exhausted. Now I can walk for a half an hour and not even be winded. I'm getting healthy, again. :D :nana: :D

That's fab!

Feels good, doesn't it? :D

Way to go, Graceanne! :)

How is massive improvement (driveway to 30 min walk) not awesome?

Good on ya!

I only had 17 minutes to get to yoga from the shower and almost chickened out but it only takes 7 to get to the gym. It was good though. Forced me out of my comfort zone and did some good things for flexibility and for my back. And, no, he doesn't slow down for 45 minutes so it can't be bad for weight loss either. It's only once a week though, so I have to do some on my own. It's a lot easier to turn off a DVD than walk out on a class. I'll give it a shot though.

Good for you, Gracie!

I don't remember the ages of your children, but I know that mine (now 7 & 8) are much happier on walks with a destination. We're fortunate to leave near a number of establishments (grocery store, second-run movie theater, subway, dollar store) and a park. We've also developed a special walking route around our neighborhood on which we see a bunch of different dogs. There's a great dane on the route that gets the girls excited every time; it's a sad day when he's indoors.

This year I'm looking forward to taking them hiking this year since they're getting old enough to venture further from home/car.

Mine are 7, 8, and 11. The 11 year old stayed home, though. She's going through an anti social phase right now. The walk was their idea, though. (The 7 and 8 year old, that is.) They wanted to see if there are any children in our neighborhood. I told them if they left me alone long enough to get the dining room, kitchen, and living room caught up I'd take them for a walk.

Thank you. It's not as awesome as catty's cause she walked five miles, and I still could not do that. But, maybe, soon! My goal would be to be able to walk to the top of Multnomah falls, instead of getting left at the bottom while K takes the kids.

Ooh I've just googled it - looks beautiful! Cool to have a goal like that :)

Well it was the weekly weigh-in at Slimming World tonight and I've lost two pounds this week. I'm really pleased with that, especially coming as it does straight after last week's four-pound loss.

So, when I've lost four more pounds (hopefully by Easter), I'll be precisely half way to my goal weight :)

Hello all,

I finally went under 160. Took 2 months of eating right and exercise. I don't know why I seem to plateau close to the tens. I have 30 lbs left to go to get to the weight I want. But I know I can do it, just wish it went faster and being sick does not help, I missed 2 weeks of workouts with bronchitis. yuck. But now I am back on my schedule, but exhausted and sore tonight. I feel like the 2 weeks off has really made me weak, I can tell a difference in what I can do. :( Two weeks ago I went for a ball at volleyball and came down hard on my right side, it felt like I bruised my wrist, arm, and side. Unfortunately now my knee and shoulder on that side feel like I have pulled a muscle or something, it hurts my shoulder in certain positions and my knee going up stairs. Other than that they feel fine if maybe a little weak, any suggestions on how to get this to heal?

My workout regime normally is;
Monday hour of volleyball (indoor till April then in sand)
Tuesday 40 min piliates, 40 minutes med to hvy aerobics
Wednesday hour of beg/intermediate Yoga
Thursday 40 min med Water Aerobics, 40 min Adv Yoga
Fri - Sunday off

My goals are;
1. More energy
2. Lose weight and tone
3. Increase Flexibility

Suggestions are welcomed. :)
First of all, let me say that it's impossible to accurately diagnose an injury over the internet.

That being said, I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Your knee was most likely bruised, as there is not really any muscle that could have been "pulled" with the mechanism that you described. You may have strained a muscle in your shoulder, but I doubt its anything to worry about unless you heard an audible "pop" or "snap".

There is not really anything you can ever do to "heal" an injury. Your body heals on its own as long as further injury does not occur. You should be able to go about your usual activity without concern.

Okay, I see the distinction, thanks. And, yeah, he said it was likely from running, which is why I don't do that anymore, but he was also pretty clear that it was just a congenital fluke...meaning that it's not like I was mistreating my knees...I just have extra-weak or fragile cartilage or something that was causing it to degenerate much faster than normal.

Today I'm stuck in bed with a bum knee. I didn't even DO anything to it, but I woke up several times last night with it hurting and it kills to walk on today. This seems to happen once or twice per year since my surgeries and I have no idea why. Icing and heating seem to help, though, and it's generally better late in the day. But since I work in a hospital that requires me to be on my feet all day, it does mean that I miss work, which sucks. I have no idea why it happens; I've never bothered to see an MD about it because it happens so infrequently. I do wish I knew why, though.
Again, it's difficult to diagnose without a proper physical assessment and medical history.

Unexplained night pain is sometimes a cause for concern, although rarely in the knee. If it does persist then you should get it checked out.

Understant that OA is a progressive condition that will get worse the older you get. Aside from age, there are three other modifiable risk factors.

1) Activity You have already adressed this by limiting high impact activity such as running.
2) Body Weight Judging from your avatar pic, I don't think this is an issue.
3) Quadriceps Strength The stronger your muscles are, the more support they can provide to the joints. Quad strength is particulary important.

The damage that is already done can not be reversed (aside from getting a knee replacement). All you can do is minimize further damage.

I squat about 450#, but squat wide and parallel, so it is more posterior chain dominant. The usual prescription for strengthening the quads are lunges, split squats, and the like, or possibly front squats. While front squats aren't all that horrible for my knees, they don't make my shoulders happy in any way. Is there something else that I can do that is quad dominant and might not kill my knees?

Or should I just keep squatting and trust that the quads will be plenty strong? This is my gut feeling, but I'm not above asking someone else for an opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts I appreciate it. I do have an appointment this week with the doctor for another issue and if it isn't better then I will be discussing it with her. It is driving me crazy though, having to think every time I go to walk up stairs is annoying.

Hi WD ~ Nice to see you. :)

Yoga is very demanding. I take a class once a week myself. It runs an hour. I do some between classes myself. The improvement in flexibility is what does it for me. And yes it has been quite the workout when it is over.

When core areas are targeted that is when the DOMS is most memorable the next day.

And no, that isn't what all of here think it is. I was told by the friend of mine who introduced me to the term that his trainer used; that that term isn't what my pervy brain thought. :)

Thank you for this. That's completely consistent with what I've heard from the surgeon.

The random night pain that was still there in the morning DID clear up by the end of the day. I did some heating and icing and elevation...not sure if any of that worked or if it resolved spontaneously, but who cares as long as it resolves, right?

Quadriceps strength...I hadn't heard that before. I've been told to do some cycling to build up "knee strength" but I didn't know precisely which muscles that was supposed to mean, nor do I enjoy cycling, indoors or out. Quad strength, however, I definitely know how to address. Again, thank you, that's helpful. :rose:

Heh, I use DOMS all the time to describe the soreness. I just don't use it here, and for the exact reason you explained :D

Hey, I'm really enjoying the success stories on here lately...WD, Catty, Gracie, etc...you guys are doing awesome!! If I had my own cheer leading squad, I'd send them your way. You'll just have to settle for me clapping madly in your direction, sorry.

I'm getting ready for bike season. Still don't have a bike yet but that should happen in the next month or so. I figure this year I'll just get back into running, swimming, biking casually then plan on a triathlon or two in 2011, once I'm back in race shape.

So last night I did a spin class. I was a bit worried because the name of the class was "X-treme Ride" and this is Nelson, afterall, where everyone and their dog is an extreme rider. The only spin classes I've ever done were a private thing set up for my triathlon club - they were farking tough and the last one I did was about 6 years ago! Eek.

Anyway, I went. The class should probably be renamed. Maybe "Good Ride" or "Make You Sweat Pleasantly Ride" because it definitely wasn't "X-treme"...and may I just say...whew. LOL. I will go back though...boy it felt good to be back in the saddle!!:D Can't wait to hit the road!
