There is a lot of leeway on the question of sex between cousins.

If you Google cousin marriage, you can discover countries where marriage between cousins is legal. Even more extraordinary, there is a list of US states where marriage between cousins is illegal, some where it is legal if there can be no children, and some where it is legal without any restricitions.

It occurrs to me that a story of a pair of full cousins who are legally married with children, in one US state. For one reason or another, have an adventure going on a road trip, crossing state borders which makes their relationship illegal on one day and legal the next. this could be intriguing, unless I misunderstand the question of the validity of one states laws, in another US state.

I think you do. My undestanding is that once a legal marriage occurs, in any state or foreign country, the couple is always considdered legally married in the US, no matter if the marriage wouldn't have been allowed in whatever location the couple is in.

There was an episode of Law & Order once where a 40-something guy avoided a statutory rape charge in NYC, for sleeping with a 16-year-old girl, because they'd gotten married in another state where it's legal to marry 16-year-olds with their parents' consent. Since the right of married couple to have sex trumps the age laws of consent in NY, the cops couldn't touch him.

This also applies to bigamous marriages, to my understanding. If you've married 8 women in a country that allows it, you can move your hot little harem anywhere a still-married person can't legally marry another person, and yet all 8 of your marriages will be considdered legally valid.

Out of curiosity, are there any states remaining where polygamy is legal? (Bigamy would be if you had two spouses, 8 spouses is polygamy or octogamy or some such).

Wow! I just got that! It's Bi-gamy. I never realized that the Bi meant "2", because it's pronounced Big-amy. I thought those marriages were called bigamous because they were "bigger" than the standard one mommy, one daddy family.

But now that you've explained it, it seems so obvious.

I'd imagine there would be. My understanding of Mormonism is that it permits polygamy, and there's a lot of them in Utah.

I was more thinking of people from foreign countries, e.g. Saudi Arabia, which I believe still has nobles with harems.

But now that you've explained it, it seems so obvious.

Don't feel bad, I keep having these "holy crap!" moments for the past few months where I'll suddenly realize something about a word's meaning or makeup, after having been using it without any deep thought about it for years and years.

Well, as far as Mormonism goes, I know the main Mormon church banned the practice, though there are a few sects here and there that still do it. Dunno if it's *legal* for them to do it or if they just do and hope to keep under the radar.
