"Indecent Proposal"
Keith slammed the calculator down on the table and let loose with a profanity. He drew a deep breath, holding it, trying to regain his composure. He failed, standing and, with a sweeping motion, sending all of the household bills -- most with red overdue stamps on them -- across the kitchen.
He stormed out of the kitchen on onto the back porch, where he let loose with another profanity. Then, despite telling himself that he wouldn't, he began sobbing.
We're gonna lose it all, he told himself, scanning the spacious back yard of the beautiful suburban home. To his left, he saw the boat; three payments late. To his right, the twin ATVs, sitting on the trailer with the dune buggy; four payments late, each. And of course, all around him, the home his now-gone parents had left him; sixteen payments late.
The only asset he had in his life that wasn't in the red was lying in a lounge chair out by the pool, catching rays, totally unaware of the financial situation that he'd gotten them in via some very risky investments that didn't pan out.
She was sitting up in the chair, her ear plugs now out and in her hands, staring at him with a look of concern he hated seeing on her pretty face. Did she hear you cuss? he wondered. He hoped not; he only used profanities when things were really bad.
He feigned a smile, giving her a friendly wave and gesturing her to go back to her sun bathing. He called out, "Bee, sweetheart. It was just a bee, no biggie."
As she laid back, still eying him, he tried to figure out how he was going to tell her that they were going to be moving in with her parents if they didn't find money soon ... lots of money ... very soon.
