Rex Burten was born on March 15, 1921 in central Kansas on a farm. Where he grew up they had no electricity or running water and he attended a one room school house until high school. While in college at the state university, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. Rex immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corp. and at the end of that term he found himself in OTS then on to flight training.

Lt. Rex Burten, 23, was attached to the 8th Air Force, 356th fighter group, 361st squadron stationed at Martlesham Heath, an old RAF airstrip. He was assigned a new P51 Mustang to fly on bomber escort missions which was the primary duty of his squadron. Rex’s first mission had been on Thanksgiving day, 1944. On his first mission their squadron had gotten into a fierce dogfight with a large number of German fighters. Rex was credited with shooting down one German fighter. Now a couple of weeks later he found himself on another mission escorting the bombers over the Ruer Valley a strong industrialized area of Germany.

During another dogfight Rex’s squadron leader radioed him that Coop, another pilot in their squadron had been hit and was breaking off and heading for home and that he was to fly cover for him making sure that he got back to the base safely. Or in the event that Coop’s plane couldn’t make it back to the base, Rex would be able to see where his buddy landed and could provide support if required. The two fighters broke North heading home dropping to 10,000 feet in the event that they had to ditch the damaged plane.

Shortly Rex caught sight of a lone Messerschmitt coming out of the clouds and diving on their position. Rex radioed his buddy Coop to hit the deck, which meant flying at tree top level, while he climbed to engage the enemy fighter. In the first pass the German fighter fired his guns and riddled the P51’s fuselage. One round struck Rex in the left thigh. The American pilot felt excruciating pain and blood running down the inside of his flight suit. He was just able to pull a split S maneuver ending up on the German’s tail. Rex knew that he was only going to have one chance at getting this German so he laid on his 50 cal. machine guns. The German fighter plane started to smoke, caught fire and then exploded in midair.

Rex pulled up to avoid the ball of flame in front of him and found himself flying into what appeared to be a very dark storm cloud. Inside the cloud there was lightning flashing all around him as if encircling his plane. One by one his gauges went dead. He tried the radio to send out a mayday but it too was inoperable. Rex was truly flying blind. He remembered that he had been at 15,000 ft when his altimeter went dead. All he could do was dive out of this storm cloud hoping that he would clear the cloud cover before crashing.

Breaking through the clouds Rex was able to spot what appeared to be a very large airfield. Lowering his landing gear he was able to land safely. He taxied up to some very large buildings the likes of which he had never seen before. They were all covered with what appeared to be mirrors. There were no other planes around and the place appeared deserted. Rex couldn’t remember ever seeing a large airfield on any of his maps of the area, but then he wasn’t exactly sure where he was.

When he came to a stop he slid the canopy back feeling the cold December air in his face. He tossed his knapsack onto the wind and finally got himself extricated from the cockpit. Rex sat on the wing leaning against the fuselage quickly finding a pressure bandage to hopefully stop the bleeding from his leg wound. With the bandage in place and the tourniquet pulled tight he sat back to take stock of his situation. His winter flight suit and leather flight jacket would keep him warm for a while but not for long if the temperature were to start falling. He had his 45 cal. revolver still strapped to his side. In the knapsack were a couple days or rations, a first aid kit with one syringe of morphine which he would save as a last resort, extra rounds of ammunition, a compass and lastly a German/English translator.

Not sure whether from the blood loss or from shock and the excruciating pain, Rex sat there on the wing starting to feel faint. He knew that he had to stay alert because the enemy surely would have seen his plane go down but by now he couldn’t even move. Slowly he slumped over into unconsciousness.

2288 was a very different world from the skies it was all beautiful and bright but beneath the permanent cloud cover was a vision of the true devastation of war and the Scientific Order. With decades of wars the world had lost sight of all the scientific world was doing and now there were those running around damaged and manipulated by the Order.

Nadia was one such being. Like so many she was abducted by the order and experimented on and held prisoner being tested on for years till yet another war devastated her “prison” and she survived escaping into the remains of the world. There were many like her either from direct manipulations or from the chemicals they covertly had placed in the bombs and coated the world.

Hearing a sudden strange noise she crouched near what was left of the window watching the strange plane landing. Snarling slightly she was puzzled as no explosion nor any troops materializing she watched carefully as only one wounded being climbed from this strange thing. Distrusting this, though the scent of blood striking her animal like senses like a ton of bricks. She watched him pass out and slowly began to leap between the building remains till she reached the ground. Stalking slowly up to the plane she leaped to the top of it and moved close to him warily till she smelled the strange odor that usually led to things exploding and grabbing the man she leapt clear of the plane. Setting him down she studied him carefully and moved to find a healer pad and putting it on his chest and activating it before backing away to be a safe distance when he wakes up. Still not sure if this is a trap or not.

Slowly Rex came to, his first thought was the pain had disappeared. Then he felt something on his chest and as he started to sit up he saw something move out of the corner of his eye. He wasn’t quite able to make out just what had appeared to move off in the distance. The light of day was beginning to fade and he was still a bit groggy. Looking around quickly he discovered that he was laying on the ground a short distance from his plane not exactly sure how he had gotten to the ground. His first instinct was to reach for his 45 cal. Revolver still holstered at his side. Rex drew his weapon but held it close not wanting to appear to menacing in case there was someone from the underground resistance nearby, “hello is anyone out there? I’m an American pilot and I am wounded. Show yourself.” As he glanced around to see if anyone was coming forward he discovered that his knapsack with his provisions, ammunition and first aid kit was no where to be seen. As the light of day continued to fade, Rex began to get concerned as the temperature was starting to drop also. If he wasn’t able to find suitable shelter from the cold he may not survive the night.

She watched him till he spoke and then slowly moving a little closer. She was fully human but she had lived as little more than an animal for so long she had lost some understanding of speaking.

What is...pie lot?

Watching him looking for something she moved back to the plane leaping to the top and trying to vanish inside to see if there was more to this being and this machine. Finding the bag she quickly grabbed it and leaped once more down from the plane with the grace and balance of a feline. Crouching low she began to search the bag still keeping a wary eye on him.

Long raven hair and an athletic build her muscles clearly tense ready to bolt at the slightest sign of trouble. Her long raven hair tied back with a black band around her head holding her hair fully out of her face.

Clad in what looked like remains of what was once some form green military shirt held tight to her by some almost vest looking clothing and a crude dagger in her hand.

Rex saw her as she moved toward his plane. He had never seen anyone dressed quite like this girl was. He could see that she had long dark hair with a bronze skin and she was carrying some sort of dagger or knife. When she got to his plane she was able to leap up onto the wing. Surely he was hallucinating there is no way that anyone could do that. He kept his revolver at his side ready to use if needed. He didn’t want to frighten someone away. Rex called out, “who’s there. I am an American. Show yourself.”

Then Rex saw the woman grab his knapsack from the wing and in one movement leaped to the ground. She started going through it keeping a watchful eye on him. “Hey that is my knapsack. I would appreciate it if you would leave my things alone.” Rex tried sitting up and found that he was a bit stiff from lying on the cold pavement. Although his leg wasn’t hurting like it had been earlier. “I’m not hear to cause you any harm. My plane was hit and I was wounded. All my gauges went out including my radio. I don’t even know exactly where I am. Would you please help me?” He put out his left hand palm up in a very non threatening way.

Looking quickly up at him when he moved his hand she... snarled? Almost a wolven snarl as she watched him she asked again with a more angered tone.

Whit is... pie lot? What is Meri can?

She pointed to his chest.

Med pad... if healed... shut off.

She found nothing of any real interest in the pack so she stood up and circled a little further from him back towards the buildings. Clearly distrust was all she knew in this ruined world.

What is that...

Pointing to the plane. Scent like fire... like destroyer

Rex heard her speak, “pilot, I fly that airplane,” pointing to his P-51 Saying it more slowly this time, “American, I am from the United States not a Nazi.” Pointing to his chest she said Med pad and something about shutting it off. He had no clue what was even on his chest. Carefully Rex lifted the pad from his chest and looked at it having never seen anything like it. Setting it down on the pavement beside him. "Can I have my knapsack back?" pointing to the pack that she had been looking through. “Who are you? What is your name. My name is Rex Burten, I am a Lt. in the US Army Air Corp. Where am I? Is this Belgium or France?” The young woman pointed to his plane asked what is that. “That is my plane a P-51 Mustang. I had to land after going through a very strange storm.”

You are healed. Pad would not unlock if not.

She moved a little closer still studying him. What is Bel gium Fra France.

Pausing she tilted her head crouching as she moved a little closer. Though never loosing the animalistic air she calmed some.

See words you say... wall...

she moved close enough th grab the pad and then leaped back motioning him to follow her she crouched waiting. This was a strange being to know the ancient words from the ruins... How could he know them and what was United States all there was in her world was Scientific Order and everywhere else.

I can show you.

Rex reached down to his leg and undid the tourniquet and carefully removed the pressure bandage expecting to see a bloody mess and a nasty bullet hole in his leg. To his surprise there was no wound it had some how miraculously healed. Looking at the woman crouching near to him, “how did you do that? What happened to my wound? Who are you and exactly where am I?” She said something about words on a wall. She had motioned for him to follow her. Slowly Rex got to his feet a bit unsteady at first but then finding his balance. He was still holding on to the revolver not sure whether it was safe to holster the weapon or not. He took a few steps over to where his knapsack lay and gathered the contents stuffing them back inside all the while keeping an eye on the strange woman. Rex looked around still unsure about what he was looking at or even where he was.

Healing pad... *She looked at him puzzled that he did not know that* They called Nadia *tapping against her chest as if indicating her name. It had been a long time since she had been able to speak to anyone or had anyone to speak to. Even though the genetic altered were still human the Scientists treated them like herd or pack animals.

Where... Old land *she knew no other name for what once was the US.* Your words... Ancient words. She looked back at him puzzled by this clearly normal and was confused why he was not trying to capture or kill her. Strange being indeed but even his clothing was strange as well... seeming solid... one piece like nothing she had seen before*

It finally hit him, she was obviously a refugee possibly displaced from her homeland by the Nazis. There was a distinct possibility that she had never seen a fighter pilot before. Rex was still wearing his leather flight helmet and his goggles were still on his forehead. Reaching up he took off his goggles and helmet exposing his short cropped sandy blonde hair. The young woman touched her chest and said called Nadia. Well at least they were getting somewhere now that he knew her name. Figuring that she was not a threat, Rex holstered his revolver and threw his knapsack over his back. She was not making a whole lot of sense guessing it was because she didn’t speak English. She had said something about Old Land and Ancient words which made no sense at all. This time Rex reached out his right hand while touching his chest, “I am called Rex. I am a friend. I will not hurt you. Do you have a home or a place to stay?” It was getting dark out and he thought it best if they could get to some cover. He wasn’t relishing being out in the cold. That made him wonder why this young woman was not shivering with no more than she was wearing.

She pointed to the collapsing building across the ancient tarmac. Then turned walking from him her steps still intent yet graceful like a feline. The more she moved the more animalistic her stride would appear to be as she stalked her path towards the ruins that bore the words that he kept speaking of America.

Follow I will show you Ancient place... You know ancient words. You explain this place... explain cages strange metals.

She kept walking but looked back to make sure he was following.

She pointed to the buildings on the other side of the airfield then turned and started walking in that direction. Rex followed the young woman at a reasonable distance not wanting to scare her. He watched her as she walked with such a fluid gracefulness. She actually was a very beautiful woman. Rex’s mind began to wander as he imagined sitting out the rest of the war with this very interesting and a bit intriguing woman. She kept talking about an ancient place and ancient words which made him wonder just what it was she was talking about. The one thing that he couldn’t figure out was how his gun shot wound had healed so miraculously. He knows he hadn’t imagined the wound as his flight suit was torn and bloody. He also wondered where the bullet fragment went that was lodged in his leg. As he followed Nadia it turned out he had way more questions than answers. Looking back at his plane he thought about trying the radio one more time to see if it was out completely or just knocked out from the storm. He would have to take time tomorrow morning to go check it out. As they neared the buildings Rex’s stomach started growling. He hadn’t eaten since early morning and according to his watch it was now just about 7 in the evening.

She stopped at the ruins of a building and walking in she knelt down and brushed the dust from a faded pattern in the floor Amongst the faded images and words that looked centuries old read Consulate United States of America. She looked back waiting for him to catch up and pointed to the words.

Ancients words...

Her head tilted as she looked to him as if she too wanted answers. Once he saw the words on the floor she would point out other signs on the walls to him listening for him to read what they were. Library Conference and Storage signs were still in one piece but there were others that were names from the glass doors that were shattered and scattered.

Rex know Ancients building?

Rex stood next to Nadia inside an old abandoned building that looked like it had been in ruins for some time. Most likely this building had been collateral damage from the intense bombing that the Allies had unleashed on the Germans. She knelt down and brushed the debris from faded words that looked really old that read Consulate United States of America. Pointing to the words she said ancient words. Rex knelt down next to Nadia his arm brushing against hers as he brushed more of the dust away, “yes the United States of America, that is where I am from.” He took both of his hands placing them on his chest and motioning to the words on the floor. He thought about what he was seeing and couldn’t figure out just where he might be. He sure didn’t remember hearing of any US Consulate any where on the European mainland. Turning to Nadia, Rex put his hands on her arms, “why do you say ancient words? What country are we in? France, Belgium?” Rex’s mind was racing he couldn’t for the life of him place where they might be. He gently pulled her close to him feeling her body against his as he whispered in her ear, “Nadia I wish you could tell me where we are” Exhaustion and hunger slowly take hold of his body as he slumps back coming to rest against a wall pulling Nadia down with him.

Do not know of places you speak. This is Old lands.

When he grips her the more feral instincts took over and she struggled to get free. Their falling back against a wall not helping matters any only adding to her feral panic and near aggressive clawing.

Release now… her voice sounding nearly like a wolven growl.

Rex released his grip on Nadia as she sprang up away from where he was now lying on the floor up against a wall. He wondered what all she had been through with the ravages of war. He had heard of women being tortured and raped by the Nazis. Her response seemed like that of a feral cat, a bit wild and definitely not trusting. She was not comfortable with his touch that was for sure. “Nadia it’s ok I am not going to hurt you. It’s just that I am exhausted and starving and am so confused about where I am.” As he lay there he pulled his knapsack around in front of his opening it and pulling out a can of rations. Then he dug in the pocket of his flight jacket and produced a pocket knife with a can opener blade. The label on the can read beef stew. Rex knew that there would be very little resemblance to beef stew in the look or the taste of the contents of this can. Once open he opened up the spoon that was on his utility knife and scooped up a large bit of the stew. Holding it up he offered it to Nadia, “would you like something to eat? I am starved I don’t have much but you are welcome to share.”

Getting away from him she moved to the room labeled Library and once the door was opened she climbed like a cat through the wreckage and started tossing out the books and papers before climbing back out and crouching near the pile and taking out something that looked like a lighter but not one he would have ever seen before as the flame was green and looked solid. She was preparing to ignite the books before pausing and sliding some to him and the strange tube "lighter".

Some say ancient words on them, or fire for night.

Taking a pouch out from her small pack she opened it up and took out what looked like a small leaf and something else and ate that slowly.

Nadia moved into a room that was marked Library and started tossing out books and paper making a pile not far from where he was. When she climbed back into the larger room where Rex was she took out a strange device that appeared to be some sort of lighter. Although it was nothing like any thing he had ever seen. This unusual device produced a green light that looked like it was a solid not like the flicker of a flame that he was familiar with. It appeared that she was going to burn the books but she stopped and slid some of the books and the strange device over to him. Rex picked one of the books and opened it up. It was written in English. He quickly looked at the front cover but didn’t recognize the title or the author. He turned to the title page and at the bottom where the copy rite date was in Roman numerals, MMCXXXVIII. Rex’s knowledge of Roman numerals was a bit sketchy. How ever he did remember that M was 1000 and C was 100. So he figured out that the number on the paper was 2,138. “Nadia it says that this book was printed in 2138. How can that be this is 1944 and I am a pilot in the war against Nazi Germany.” He so hoped that she could understand what he was saying. The longer he was here the more questions he had of where he was.

Nadia had said that the books were for fire for the night. His first thought was not to burn the books but then it was getting colder and it seemed at the moment that this was all there was to make a fire for some warmth. She knelt down again near him and the pile of books and pulled something out of the pouch she that was hanging at her side and began to eat. Rex continued to eat slowly the stew from his can of rations. It would have been better if it could have been warmed up but there wasn’t a stove or hotplate nearby and it didn’t appear that there was any electricity here where ever that was. Almost done with his ration Rex reached out to the pile of books with the unusual lighter that Nadia had given him and fumbling around with it was able to get it to work. The books immediately caught fire and soon the pile was ablaze. He motioned to Nadia to come over by him. He took off his leather jacket and offered it to her, “You can wear my coat to keep you warm. If you would sit close to me we could keep each other warm.” What was he thinking she couldn’t understand a word he was saying. Oh how he wished her English was better.

She moved over closer warily. Brow raised at the offered coat her head tilted at the numbers he mentioned and pointed to the books again. Ancients... you are of Ancients? Completely confused now she thought for a moment and grabbing one of the books from the other pile she had just come from and held it out to him. She did not understand what was really all in it but clearly he might. The book was a history of the US and the world ending in 2200 with the unveiling of the next step in the Scientific Orders plans to aid humanity and Make the looming war the last one ever... Clearly with the world around them they failed.

She studied the jacket. What is this. crouching within arms reach of Rex and the jacket. Why hold like that?

Nadia kept mentioning the Ancients and ancient time. Rex still hadn’t figured out just what she was talking about. She brought him another book. The cover had a picture of the Confederate flag and the stars and stripes and in big bold print the title read ‘History of the United States 1492 - 2200’ He blinked and looked back at her. What did this possible mean. He opened the book and the table of contents read Chapter 1 -- Colonial Times. 1492-1850 Chap. 2 The Civil War 1850-1870 Chapter 3 A Developing Nation 1870-1910 Chapter 4 WWI and the US 1910-1920 Chapter 5. The Industrial Revolution 1920-1935 Chapter 6 WWII 1935-1945 Rex’s heart started beating really fast as he turned to the pages of Chapter 6.

Sure enough there were pictures and articles about the war. Hitler’s rise to power in Germany. There were pictures and several pages devoted to Pearl Harbor. He kept thumbing through the pages in amazement. There were pictures of the different airplanes of the war. The next page he turned was the biggest shock of all there was a picture of a P-51 Mustang sitting on an airfield in England. Rex looked up shocked and motioned for Nadia to come closer. He turned the book to her pointing out the picture of the P-51 then pointing out to his plane and in an excited voice, “Nadia that is the plane I am flying. Look at the picture it matches the plane sitting out there. I am alive in 1944 but for some strange reason I don‘t believe that I am in 1944 anymore. Can you tell me what the date is today by chance?”

She tilted her head thinking of a way to get answers to him and looked around.

Will go to Jahee It can talk about Ancients with you.

She moved a little from him and laid down near the fire and curled up to sleep. Late into the night though the temps fell more and the fire was fading. Her slender form shivered though she still slept deeply.

Will go to Jahee It can talk about Ancients with you. Rex wondered who or what Jahee was and why did she refer to him or her as it. It was apparent that she meant they would go to Jahee tomorrow. Nadia moved away from him a little and laid down near the fire. Rex also laid down near the fire to try and stay warm. However, he was unable to get to sleep due in part to the hard floor but mostly due to the unanswered questions running around in his mind. The temperature had fallen off and it was a bit colder as the fire died down. He could see that even though asleep Nadia was shivering. While there was still some light from the fire Rex got up and went in and found some more books in the library. As much as he hated to burn books it was necessary if they were to survive the night. He piled more books on the fire bringing in back up to a blaze. Then he took his leather flight jacket and laid it over Nadia’s slight frame. Then he laid down next to her and tried to get some sleep.

Sensing someone close her eyes flew open as the jacket touched her. She snarled at first but then saw who was there in the firelight and nodded and curled up more watching him for now. She had never seen anyone not changed or "touched" by the wars and Scientific Order. Used to sleeping very little due to being on the run she moved back into the library and tried to find anything that might help this kind strange man. She still had the jacket around her and her more animal side kept getting whiffs of his scent... so strange not like any being from this place and time. She was starting to feel sorry for his confusion. She studied the symbol on his jacket and tried to find it in any of the books that had the same symbol. She found some by the time the sun was coming up.it had several symbols in it from before his time to 2590. She was bringing the last of the 20 book set out by the time he would be waking up. Taking off the jacket she pointed to the symbol and then to the books she just brought out.

Ancients symbols... like your symbol

For the first time she smiled. One of those hopeful smiles as she was hoping this helped him some how.

Rex woke from a fairly restless sleep. The fire had died down and Nadia was no longer laying beside him. Raising up on an elbow he looked around then saw her coming out of the library carrying some books. She stacked them with some others then took off his jacket that she had been wearing and pointed to the US flag embroidered onto the upper portion of the left sleeve saying Ancient symbols like your symbol. Then she smiled. It was the first time that Rex had seen her smile and it made him smile too. “Thank you Nadia. Let me look at the books you have brought out." There were books that talked of an age of a communication explosion. Books that described a space race and if he had read correctly US astronauts landing on the moon. Rex had been pouring over the books in complete awe reading about the past but for him the distant future. The common thread to each book that he looked at was the symbol as Nadia had called it of the stars and stripes.

When he started thinking that she keeps using the word Ancient it hits him that maybe what ever time he is in the United State must be no more. He begins to be concerned about what he will find out beyond the walls of this old crumbling ruins of a once apparently magnificent building. The books that Nadia had gathered were amazing it would take him a tremendous amount of time to go through all of them to make sense of the information stored in them. Rex found himself sitting there with a book in his lap and tears beginning to form and run down his cheeks. He had no idea why he was crying but he just couldn’t help it. He felt so alone. The only person that he knew existed in this place where ever it was was Nadia. She didn’t have a clue what he was going through right now. Slowly he stood up and gestured to her to come over to him. When she was near he slowly reached out his hands encircling her drawing her close to him. “Please Nadia don’t be frightened. I feel so alone that I just want to hold you.”
