I have toyed with the IR aspect a bit, but it’s usually for aesthetic reasons: one character finding beauty in the contrast of skin tones, or a character wanting to recapture or emulate the appearance of a former lover. I don’t consider these IR stories because in my mind, IR is either a clash of cultures finding common ground or is playing with racial stereotypes.
The former can be done with any type of culture clash and doesn’t have to be racial, though that is easy and can be interesting. The latter doesn’t have to be bad, but usually is IME. Carly’s WMAF Fantasy by Masterful_Husband does it well. The character recognizes the racist aspect of her fantasy, but chooses to lean into it. For her, she gets something out of it. I can’t name any of the “bad” type of these stories because I usually nope out once I realize what is being done. Am I missing out on some good stories? Probably, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay.

Here’s the thing. The formulaic stuff can get you some views, but in the end, if you just go for the tropes, unless it’s an exceptionally well written story (which, let me be blunt, they usually aren’t) you aren’t going to hit the top of the category.

I have found that you can break the expectations and do pretty well. A lot of commenters didn’t want me to make my main character bisexual, for instance, but I did and I don’t think it’s really hurt things.

These days I think folks like it when the story isn’t just formulaic and repetitive. You can only read so many bored housewife stories after all.

I think the psychology of big black guys ‘ravishing’ (euphemism much?) petite white women is twofold. White guys put themselves in the place of the black guy and safely get their fill of ravishment while blaming the ‘animalistic’ black guys. White guys put themselves in the place of the petite white woman and live out an even more taboo fantasy, one they can’t admit to themselves.

Based on what I see down in the threads below, its more of the second and less of the first...and that is why I don't read from that category.

That's what inspired me to give this a try. I really like the idea of IR romance but most stories I read lean too heavily into the fetishisation part of it.

I'm not saying what you're proposing would be a dud in IR. In fact, if it succeeds, it'd probably stand out and have some longevity there. On the other hand, perhaps Romance is the better fit?

I agree. I have a couple of WIP's where I have characters of various cultures mixing together. None of those stories will be posted in IR because they aren't fetishized. They're simply real.

True. I really want to see if I can take the fetish and make something good out of it. Maybe I can't. I won't know if I don't try.

@NoCa - I’ve just seen this thread and thought I’d add my thoughts. I’ve pretty much only written IR stories in here. I try to avoid the common tropes (but still get sucked in from time to time) and usually use the IR aspect as a way of adding drama and tension to my stories.
