It's Gen-X's turn now

I don’t evaluate candidates based on what generation they’re slotted in but do feel that the demands of the presidency require an individual with relevant experience coupled with the stamina to do the job.

It’s a fun conversation though and I’d be curious to see the proportional representation of Gen X in the House and Senate. I suspect they’re well represented.

I’m also saddened that Trump put a fucking Millennial on the ticket. Dude’s only a year older than my oldest kid. 😀

So people can be “Generationally fluid” based on how they personally feel / identify.

🤔

That actually makes perfect sense and tracks perfectly with (reinforces) the concept of “Gender fluidity”.

There’s actually another form of “Generational fluidity” that involves what age group individuals personally identify with -child, young adult, mature adult, elderly adult.

A perfect example of that ^ was when Trump recently identified as being a young man.

That ^ may be the most extreme example of “fluidity” in history, but hey, Donald can be whatever he identifies as. No absolute judgment here.

👍
Strauss & Howe put people in generations if they share life experiences. For example, the Boomers were teens/young adults in the 60s. They have vivid memories of JFK, hippies, and Vietnam.

Generation X missed all that. They were teens/young adults in the 80s with big hair, Reagan and MTV.

Someone born in 1959 is liminal. They were only 9 years old in 1968, so while technically they're a Boomer they might feel like they missed most of the formative experiences of Boomer identity. Turning 21 when Reagan was elected might make them identify as X, particularly if they danced to New Wave music and had big hair.

It's not infinitely fluid. You can only shift if you were born near a dividing line. If you were born in 1946, then you were 22 in '68. Like Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, you're a Boomer.

I get it.

I was just riffing off the theme.

😎

The model you provided makes perfect sense and is perfectly accurate, imho.

👍

I would still submit that some people do personally identify with different generations regardless of their actual place in the queue you provided, but that is separate from the solid parameters of the model.

Strass & Howe's generational theory is a bit like star signs, but it does have predictive value. They predicted a big collapse of trust in institutions about now, leading to a major crisis that will be resolved by civic-minded millennials being led by savvy Xers inspired by the vision of aging Boomers.

They wrote Generations in 1991, so it never occurred to them the crisis would be a resurgence of fascism funded by oligarchs, but they were remarkable prescient.

(I'm barely X, BTW, but Gen-X is so much cooler than the Millennials, l couldn't resist. I do remember Reagan ... barely.)

I can recognize / appreciate the value of their work and its prescience.

Their perspective / viewpoint is more than interesting and quite welcome.

Lol. BSG although I somewhat was entertained by the side street your thread took here’s what’s, IMO, cross generational - no one at the RNC mentioned abortion. No one. Vance, trump and company have no clue on how to speak to the voting public on the one topic that has demonstrably shown Republicans losing election after election even in red leaning states since overturning Roe. Babyboo is right, trump placed on the ticket a millennial who wishes for a nationwide ban. Let the debates begin I say!

You and your wife had kids. That puts you on the 'Dude's' good side. That's a plus for you since you are contributing to the future of the nation, according to Vance.

'Dud' said today that Kamala Harris was NOT a contributor since she has no children of her own. Raising step-children doesn't count according to the 'Dick.' Got to have kids, in his narrow pea-brain hillbilly mind, to be able to run for office and have a stake in the future of America.

Vance has stamina, got kids too. Grew up backward and Mal-treated but hey he just lied a little bit about that in his book. Kentuckians disown him right now. Gone from Dude to Dud to Dick in just a few days. Must suck to know Trump screwed up again with a VP pick. At least the Dick promises to lie and will offer to pardon Trump if it becomes necessary.

Yeah! What happened to that border bill?
It failed because it was going to allow 5000 illegals in a day. Read the fine print. The American people want zero illegals coming across that border a day. And they want the people who help them thrown into prison, which is a federal crime under 18 USC 1324.
