Having thought it over, I realize I was unfair to Jenna Bush. By trading on her family's famous name to achieve instant success in a field that would otherwise require some special talent or training, she's just following in her father's footsteps. And unlike him, she hasn't caused any known fatalities.

She should, however, expect harsher scrutiny than first-time authors who did it the hard way.

Of course, it's a little ironic that Bush didn't encourage his offspring to make the same sacrifice he's required of so many other families; a sacrifice that he insists is essential to America's future. But then again, the twins are following their dad's example: "Do as we say, not as we do."

Speaking of right-wing hypocrisy, this week's Saturday Night Live had some questions for Senator Larry Craig (who has taken back his pledge to resign even though a judge has refused to let him take back his guilty plea):

"Do you oppose gay marriage because marriage takes the sizzle out of it? Or because if gay marriage is legalized, there won't be enough single gay men soliciting sex in airport restrooms?"

Social conservatism and hypocrisy: the conjoined twins of human behavior.

This is a wonderful day in my life!

Can we shoot the children of stupid people? I'd really like to take a preventive stance on second-generation stupidity.

There's often a regression to the mean, which should make them less stupid than their parents. But the TV show Cops does seem to argue against it.

It's far different from when Chelsea Clinton at age twelve (or even Amy Carter at age nine) occupied the White House, isn't it?

And yet those children were attacked during the time their dads were president.

The Bush twins, nicknamed Twinkle (Jenna) and Turquoise (Barbara) by the Secret Service, have already demonstrated a certain flair for negative media coverage with college partying. They are now twenty six years old.

They are certainly fair game for criticism on their own, um, merits.
