Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel: top 10 regions for 2012

I had no idea. That's weird. What was your crime? I wonder if it doesn't matter what the crime was, or if they have categories.

short version - I went guarantor for an ex-boyfriend on a loan, we split up and he took the goods, he stopped paying on the loan and the bank came after me, I refused to pay for goods I no longer had an interest in, bank took me to court, I got done and had to spend 14 days in jail.
wrote off a $17K debt though.
and the bastard still has the stuff.
lesson well and trully learned

Yup. You had it worse than me. My first mother-in-law screwed me in a somewhat similar fashion after her daughter and I split up. Didn't make the last three payments on a car loan in my name. I think it still shows on my credit report.

The show, "An Idiot Abroad" inspired me to make a list of places I want to see before I die. Petra is on my list, along with about 100 other places. Life is too short for me to see them all.

I've grown up a little since then, and have since had my record expunged and my credit rating has been sorted.
took a while tho!

I'm right there with you. My list is huge, and I blew a golden opportunity last year when a good friend and former student was teaching in Jordan. Pictures on her FB page of Petra, dammit.

Me, too. I knew at the time what was going to happen, but there was sort of no way around it.

at the time, i had no way out either.
the bastard completely cleaned me out.
and my lawyer told me i'd likely cop it.
luckily, i had a baby son at the time, and so i went to a minimum security facility where i could have my son with me.
it wasn't so bad *shrugs*

there's only a few places left i really want to see.
i have been blessed with the ability to travel widely for most of my life, so i've already been to many of the places other people put on their list.
growing up sailing the world on a yacht covered most of the coastal areas of the world, and since then i've made it a point to travel somewhere inland every year, plus all the travel across Oz.
NZ, Antarctica, Russia and Canada are pretty much the only places left I haven't been to.

I really don't understand the logic behind throwing someone in jail for debt.
the world is a big place to get lost in.
Sure is. I've traveled a fair amount and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface.

Lucky for you, jaded old soul, two of those places are huge and diverse. You could spend a lifetime in either Canada or Russia.

Visit Torngat National Park in Labrador, Canada.

Holy shit. I've had a section of map saved on my computer since around 2002 with the title"Oh My God We're Going Climbing Here." Mont D'Iberville is what caught my eye.

Here it is:

Since then I've dreamed of sea kayaking up along that beautifully fjorded coast and then climbing the thing. Thanks for the links; I never got around to doing any research on the area. What a cool coincidence that you posted this.

If I knew better places ( and I do ), I sure as hell wouldn't reveal them for the very simple reason that I don't want 'em destroyed by hordes of people.

The Lonely Planet series is a good source of travel information but it isn't the be-all-to-end-all.

The folk who produce the series ( and all the travel books ) have to suffer pangs of conscience. They know full well that they're helping to wreck the very places they promote.

Excellent.

For sure. I have a love/hate relationship with guidebooks in general. I did just read a funny and honest travel book by a guy who decided to tell the truth about the industry and the people who write for it. I can't recall the title or author right now, but will dig it up later and post it.

wander off the map

Trails are for tourists.
