Looking for an erotica-friendly writing group

Hi everyone,

I'm currently writing my first novel, feeling great about it, and am about 80% done with the first draft. I'm interested in finding a writing group, probably online, but it could also be in person. I'd like to find something that meets regularly. I'm just not sure how to find something like that which would be erotica friendly and have like minded writers in it. Anyone have any hints? I have looked, joined numerous discords, and nothing has ever seemed like a good fit.

Your best bet is probably hanging around places with other authors (this forum is a great place for that) and developing relationships with ones who have similar interests and goals. There are a bunch of writing threads and a bunch of social threads, read through them and see if there are people writing on similar topics as you.

There's no good "Tinder for writers" that I'm aware of.

Edit: This forum can be very newbie-friendly

This forum is (can be) a good place to discuss the craft and just generally be around writers. As @MrPixel said a sense of humor helps, as can some patience and a willingness to ignore some folks and their antics.

As far as beta readers, if that's what you're after, I'm not sure. I get the sense there are people around here who develop that kind of partnerships, but not having gone there myself I can't speak much to it. I'd suggest starting with reading people's works, finding those that resonate, and maybe reaching out with feedback or kind words or just a friendly hello. Not everyone might be receptive, and it might take some time, but maybe you'll click with some people.

There are definitely places here to find beta readers. Editor's Forum is good for that, if that's what you're looking for. If you're looking for craft talk, this is definitely the place for it, as long as you don't mind mild-to-moderate derailments, general shennanigans, and weird people like me 😁

Tell us a bit more about your novel and your general writing style / interests.

And welcome 😊

This describes every book club ever, and I'd be surprised if it didn't describe nearly every writer's club as well.

If you're okay with Discord, I run a server that's basically just a group of erotica writers of varying skill levels (including at least one who has been traditionally published) helping each other as we can.

The link is in my profile.

Sorry for multiple replies, getting used to the forum here. I've seen these forums before but wasn't sure if they were active or an avenue that would help me.

My novel is femdom, romantic but also very dirty, sweet and funny. I'm very proud of it! I love the characters. It's the easiest thing I've ever written after years of wanting to really dive into a novel, but the process is still very challenging and I'm enjoying it immensely! The four chapters I have published here are early versions of some of the scenes in the book.

For real, the preponderance of "writers groups" I've tried out were people either sitting in a room, writing and not actually interacting with each other or self-congratulatory circle jerks where everybody got a gold medal for puking on a piece of paper and calling it a masterpiece.

I wish I could bookmark this comment, haha

If you are seeking groups dedicated more to feedback, beta readers, and critique circles, try:

Passionate Ink, Erotic Readers & Writers Association, Sugarbutch, as well as erotic writer groups on sites like Goodreads.

Just a word of caution, if you have any intention of ever seeking an agent to represent you or a publisher to consider your work, do not post any of it online, even for peer review. You can share with peers through e-mail or other direct methods that do not make the work visible to anyone not part of the group. The term, "Previously published" carries a lot of weight in the industry.

I wonder what it would be like meeting with an erotica writing group in person. Interesting notion.

This place is close enough, OP. Welcome. What you do is you hang around here, keep an eye peeled for like-minded writers, and go from there; you can DM them and make your own writing group, either here or on Discord or wherever.

Welcome to the act of becoming a writer, although you've been here a 'while'. Share your work with a link when it's available. I've been on Lit. awhile myself, and received 98% positive feedback over the years. I have zero experience with groups that get together in-person, but I'm sure they're around. I've been lucky enough to meet some of my contacts on here IRL, and they've been positive influences.

This is great advice and something I've wondered about. Thanks!
