James wasn't like all the other teens today. Instead of going and partying and getting drunk he preferred to go out on his boat. It was his favorite thing to do and he was always out there on his free time. Whether he was fishing or just going for a ride he loved it out on the sea. He just turned 20 and when most of his family and friends forgot his birthday he got angry and went out on his boat to calm down. He didn't bother telling anyone where he was going because he figured he'd be back before sundown. Due to his frustration he failed to check the weather as well, something he always did before going boating.

It wasn't until he got a few miles out when he noticed storm clouds on the horizon. It was a quick moving storm because it hit him as he was making his way back. Large 35 foot swells pushed him in the opposite direction and knocked out his navigation system. James thought he was heading back in towards land but was heading further away. His boat started taking on water and then a rouge 50 foot wave hit him on the side flipping his boat. He held onto the capsized boat for as long as he could until the boat went under water. Not having time to grab a life vest or anything he thought he was done for. Treading water in the large waves became to much for him and he went under water.

To his own amazement he woke up to waves hitting him as he lay on the shore of what he thought was the local beach. After pulling himself together he realized he was on an island out in the middle of the ocean. "fucking great" he said under his breath wondering how long he was going to be stranded since he failed to let anyone know where he was going. He took shelter under a tree from the pouring rain starting to figure out his gameplan.

A storm was coming and the currents in the water told Romy that it was going to be a good one. Always the outsider and rick taker in their raft Romy couldn't wait to skim the deep waters where the waves were surely to be the biggest. About to swim away she gave a bark out to the raft and waited to see if anyone would join her but like always no one seemed to want to rick open waters where there might be orcas or sharks. Romy couldn't understand it but then again she wasn't like the other and swam out into the dark waters.

While humans were seen every once and a while the waters that her raft lived in were known to be dangerous not only because of it's strange and ever changing tides or even the heavy population of sharks but because the waters and small cluster of uninhabited islands were cursed. Romy never wondered from which old wife tales that came from but she was happy for it because it gave her a place to hide her skin and walk in the moonlight as a human. The very thing that her father told her she wasn't to do. But when he found her breaking the rules he had given up saying that she was too much like her mother. She had been dead for nearly ninety-eight years and Romy knew that the only reason she was able to get away with her acts, was because it was a connection that kept her mother alive for her father.

So you could understand Romy's delight as she saw a human take to the high battles of the waves to play. Most of the times they just kept to their boats keeping a hard eyes on this area and sailed away as quick as possible but this one dove in the waters without fear and was letting the water toss it as they liked. Smiling her toothy seal grin she quickly swam to the human and brushed up against it as the coming wave sucked their bodies up into a forming wave. As the wave curled to crash Romy tightened the muscles in her body to ride the wave. At the feeling of the wave picking her up she looked over to the human expecting it to be doing the same with it's body. Barking to get its attention in case it missed the sign of the wave she realized that this human was limp as if dead.

Suddenly fear struck her chest as the realization of what was really going on fill her mind. The human wasn't diving into the waters to play it was being tossed form the boats that they ride. A quick look in the churning waters showed her that she was right, the boat was sinking and the human was dying. Not knowing how much time she had Romy quickly swam under the lifeless body and broke against the water. He was heavy but she wasn't going to leave this human to die. Not when she had thought she made a new friend. With everything she had Romy saw towards her island, barking every time her head broke the surface letting the human know that she was saving it. Using the power of the waves she surfed into short until the human's body rocked against the break of the waves against the sands.

Making sure it's head was above the tide Romy checked for breath. Her seal face was nose to nose with the human as she patiently wait for a sign of life. It was shallow and raspy but it was there. Just to make sure she put her ear flap to his chest and listened. From what little she knew of the human body it seemed to be okay. There was breath and the steady thump of a heart beat. Relived that it was alive Romy retreated back into the water and found her favorite basking rock to sleep on till morning.

It wasn't until she heard the human scream that Romy woke up. She looked around for danger expecting to be a killer whale or a shark but found nothing. Without moving she flipped her head back and watched the human in a view that was upside down. Nothing seemed to be wrong with it either so she easily slid into the waters and swam to shore. Unsure of how it would welcome her, the many lectures of humans being dangerous filling her mind, Romy let out a single bark. She was about twelve feet still protected by the water but kept her head above water to show the human where she was. Patience not being her strong suit she barked again.

James was sitting there on the rain-soaked beach losing and regaining consciousness after losing all his energy and almost drowning at sea. Finally awakening from his daze to the summer sun beating down on his face. The storm finally cleared and the sun was beating down on him before going down behind the horizon for nightfall. After giving the beach a quick scan for any debris from the wreck that washed up on shore he spotted a seal sitting there on the sand. "Well at least I'm not completely alone on this island."

He finally stood up and had no time right now to pay attention to the sea creature. He needed to build a shelter before nightfall. After watching several survival shows on the discovery channel and using common sense he searched around for long branches and palm leaves for a roof. It could barely pass for a shelter but it would have to do for the night. James crawled into the makeshift shelter and sat there feeling his stomach growl he knew he would have to find food and fresh water as well. He fell back onto the sand thinking why did he have to come out on his boat today without following his rules.

Romy heard the human talk again but in this form it's words were a static of unknown mumbles. Acknowledging that she heard the human but just didn't understand it she barked twice and shook her head. But the human didn't seem interested and had already turned it's back. She didn't understand and thought that maybe if she took off her skin and approached it as a human it would be more likely to play and become friends. But there was a sliver of fear and kept her in her selkie form to just follow at a distance.

She watched as the human collected branches and palm leaves, place both in a pile. Unsure of how this game worked Romy figured that she would just mimic the human and surely it would tell her if she was doing it right or not. So about twenty five yards from the human and closer to the water and the protections or random standing rocks she started to collect branches. Every once and a while she would look over to the human but it was still gathering and piling so she kept at it too but the game quickly got boring. Looking over at her small pile of sticks Romy tried to understand the reason behind this game but couldn't. It must have somethign to do with the sticks and the palms to understand. So she went to the closest fallen palm leaf and sunk her teeth into the fleshy base. It gave off a nasty taste but that was simple enough to ignore as she dragged the leaf back to her stick pile. The palm proved to be a lot more difficult to maneuver and handle but because of that challenge made this part of the game a lot more fun.

When her single palm was laid next to the sticks she tried and tried but still couldn't understand the game. It wasn't until she looked up to the human to get the next part of the game that she understood. It was making a home out of this stuff. It wasn't a game and Romy could feel herself get sad. This human it seemed didn't want to play or be friends and because of what she had thought to be a game she had this awful taste in her mouth.

Knowing that the human had no where to go she dove into the ocean and went hunting. Because the humans were scared of this area the fish were thick and after a nice fat fish and a some krill the taste in her mouth was gone. Surfacing near the short after her meal, Romy wondered if the human had done any hunting and figured that it hadn't and dove back into the water.

Romy had caught a rather large cod and her first thought had been just to eat it but she hadn't given up on the human yet and swam back so she could give the fish to it. By now it had to be hungry. She had been but since she had left, came back to leave again it didn't seem that the human had moved. Slowly Romy inched up the sand knowing that this was risky. On land the human would be faster then she was but the hope that it would get distracted by the dropped fish gave her enough courage to keep moving towards it.

At one point Romy stopped moving, dropped the fish and just watched. She was about ten yards from her stick and leaf pile, another fifteen and she would be at the human. She gave a soft bark and waited. Barked again and waited. Tried of waiting Romy gently picked up the fish again and moved another five yards up, dropped the fish again and barked. This was a far as her body would let her go and without a means to get the human's attention other then to bark she sat there and barked until she got the human's attention.

James kept glancing over at the seal as he put his shelter together. He was amazed to see that the animal was mimicking him and putting it's own shelter, well pile, together. As he rested there under his shelter the seal disappeared and he wondered if he scared it away. Hunger taking over, making his stomach rumble he needed to do something about food. He started scavenging the treeline for some coconuts or anything to eat.

Then he heard the bark of the seal again and looked over to see it with a fish. "Hey there buddy, can I have that?" After speaking softly he started making his way slowly towards the seal. seeing that he scared it a little he put his arms out by his side. "Hey hey I'm not gonna hurt you I just want some food. You caught that so fast you would have no problem catching another one." He was now a couple feet from the seal and the fish he wanted. Reaching out with his long arms he grabbed the fish and placed his other big hand on the seal's head. "Good girl thank you"

James then backed off slowly with a smile on the meal that lay ahead. Now all he needed to do was find firewood and start a fire and find a sharp rock to cut the fish open. "Alright first I need to get a fire going" He said to himself as he headed a couple feet into the treeline starting his search for some dry firewood or anything to start a fire with.

There was a warm feeling that flooded Romy's body when the human patted her on the head and took her offering of food. She hadn't expected to feel so... giddy with happiness, yet that was it Romy nodded her seal head bobbing up and down. She was happy to have helped and she knew now that they were friends and because the human hadn't hurt her she could trust him. With little to be afraid of now she followed the human more closely.

She watched as he took the fish and wondered the tree line. Romy didn't understand why the human didn't eat the fish. It took the fish so it must have been hungry so why wasn't it eating it. Maybe it wasn't what it wanted. She thought about it and figured that it must be okay because it took the fish from her. She also didn't understand why the human stayed here when there was a perfectly fine cave around the point and in the next cove. It was the place she stayed and slept when she played in her human form. Of course the human hadn't ever been to her island before so how would it know of the beach cave. Flopping in the sand Romy wondered if the human stayed in the area it was washed upon for a certain reason.

Bored with just laying there thinking and watching Romy chased after the human and when she was close enough bumped her head into it's backside before scampering off again. She waited there for the human to chase her and bump her back but he didn't seem to be moving. Maybe it didn't get the game so Romy approached the human again with every intention of bumping into it again. This being one of her favorite games there was a big seal smile on her face.
