I've got over 4k followers but it has taken me a long time to collect them.

The only follower that means anything to me is the one who introduced my work to a mainstream editor.

Its beyond pathetic that the category now has a readership so full of malice that an abused woman killing her low life abuser is target of their hatred. You don't get much lower than that.

Like a lot of authors I would get a kick out of tweaking them from time to time and sitting back and watching them froth. I even did an over the top satire of the genre for fun to see if they'd realize the story in no way should bee taken seriously...nope, they could not figure it out.

But the last 3-4 years especially the hatred has gotten even worse and we now have the incel movement feeding the already woman hating bitter little pissants. So that's the type I don't need to encourage because at this point it isn't eye rolling anymore its pure raw and disturbing hatred and threats of violence towards women.

The BTB stories are not even erotic, some border on torture porn and truth is they don't even belong on an erotica site, or at least not in an erotic category, stick them in non erotic.

The lack of reads and comments there would probably cause those authors to lose interest in writing their incel manifestos rather quickly.

And thank you for your post. I was just telling someone here yesterday I was thinking of dropping something in LW to get a rise out of the little shits even though I swore I wouldn't just because of a comment I got on a non LW story that I know was one of those turds crawling out of their cat box.

But your post reminded me of why this is no longer funny to encourage a group that possesses that much vitriolic hate.

I'll just have to stick with my longtime fantasy of getting to meet one of them in person some day.

There's actually one poor troll who messages me, cackling about leaving 1-bombs and so on, because they could, and how they're even someone I communicate with on here on a regular basis.

Based on verbal and grammar cues, I've worked out who it is, but I also just don't care. I publish here to get ideas out of my head, and to hopefully entertain some folk. If I want validation, approval, and someone humping my leg, I'll get a Pomeranian.

And name him Smut-Zulu.

I got told in no uncertain terms that I am only capable of writing self-indulgent, fanboyish pap, not fit for real peoples' edification.

Some of my stories are feel-good stories, it's true. Some are fanciful. Some are grim and exceedingly violent.

But the grim and exceedingly violent ones tend to attract the 'Well, actually...' zoilists out there, as opposed to the broad-brush ninnies who have no constructive criticism to offer.

As I said, since they were so very firm in their rejection of certain aspects of my style, I will simply have to add more and more and more of these elements, because you KNOW this person is going to keep reading. It's clearly important to them, and I'd hate to see them just walk away unfulfilled...

Sometimes I respond if there is something worth saying. Occasionally, I even get worthwhile criticism that I don't appreciate right away. I had one anonymous guy (I assume a male) who from his syntax and tone I suspected was posting a number of comments. In fact, he claimed to have read other stories of mine.

Assuming this was indeed a single person - he got tiresome after a while (he was really on my tail) and I stopped responding. I assume he was looking for some validation, because he stopped commenting too. Then the other day he was back, I think, again claiming he knew my work. I almost responded - I had the rebuttal comment written and I was ready to push the button. Then I pulled back and didn't do it. I didn't want to encourage him.

The funny thing is, I believe this reader genuinely does hate the story. These chapters run about 6 Lit pages. That's over 40 Lit pages of hate-reading!

It is seven paragraphs that are primarily about the reader's dislike of the relationship dynamic between my lead characters. This has been the theme for this person's posts after several chapters. I have a male lead that a lot of readers love to hate (and say so), but this reader just hates the entire dynamic. This is a relationship based on coercion, and so is in the non-consent/reluctance category, but some readers are quite fixated on his poor communication skills and domineering attitude. So, it's an accurate comment that the male lead is control freak with poor relationship skills. The fact that he's supposed to be that way also aggravates the reader, who in one of my favorite lines says, "You are proud of writing him as an ass, and you've done a spectacular job of that, so you should be." (Followed by an excoriation of his character.)

In terms of the actual writing, the critique is that it's "monotonous," "humdrum," and "flat." I'm not sure if that is worthy criticism so much as it is an opinion, since no specifics or explanations were provided. The only suggestion in it is that she should resist more until she gets what she wants. The reader takes issue with the fact that she enjoys sex with the male lead, even though she doesn't like everything about the arrangement. There was a complaint about lack of character development, but it sounded more like a complaint that the characters hadn't developed in the way the reader wanted them to develop.

It sounds miserable to put oneself through over 40 Lit pages of something one finds monotonous, humdrum, and flat, but that's what this reader has done.

I think we all have those readers who claim to hate our stuff and vow to never read the 'undistilled toxic swill' we put out ever again, but for some reason, they're the ones who keep coming back and offering their opinions again.

And these people were doing this BEFORE covid had us all shut indoors with nothing to do. I agree, talk about dedication to a cause.

UPDATE: one of my critics REWROTE my story and sent it to me, showing me how it should have been done. And this was my multi-chapter flagship story. I was in tears laughing, because instead of I/T or Romance, this rewrite belongs in Humour/Satire. It's freaking hysterical.

The cripplingly bad grammar and numberless spelling errors aside, all he really did was just remove the sexual agency from the female character, insuring their total physical and emotional dedication to their man.

In my story, that was already the case, the couple are desperately in love, but the girl has a wild and libertine past she makes no bones about, and the guy doesn't care about her past. The Male character can still have sex with whomever he pleases, mind.

So all this turned out to just be some incel raging about how a woman has a sexual past and had not intrinsically known to keep herself pure for the man she would one day meet.

I feel very let down, I was hoping this vitriolic hostility was based on something more substantive.

Wow... I thought reading 40+ Lit pages of stuff you hate was dedication, but a whole re-write? That's commitment to a cause. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it's commitment. Or do I mean, the reader might need to be committed?

So, are you going to send him a review of his masterpiece? I wonder if he rewrites other stories, too, or if yours is special. Maybe if it is different enough from your original story, you should encourage him to post it.

I would like to see what happens if a quantum reality wall breaks. Maybe I should figure out what a quantum reality wall is before I root for seeing it broken. Do you suppose you can break the quantum wall without collapsing the quantum tunnels? Oh, what the heck, just roll the dice!

I'm not sure whether to be admire the persistence, be flattered by the fact that the he (or she - not sure on this one) is so fixated, or be sad for someone who spends so much time voluntarily subjecting themselves to reading something they genuinely hate. I did warn this reader on more than one occasion that the story will not turn into something the reader will enjoy yet, I keep receiving more opportunities to disappoint!
