My insomnia stumbled across this piece.

The angle of the piece is pretty obvious, but I'm assuming that the stats and facts are accurate. What are your thoughts on it?

Traffic doesn't really bother me. As long as the radio works, I'm fine just chilling in my car. I wouldn't last a year though. Honestly, I couldn't handle the accents for that long.

Seems to me that a high percentage of people in the U.S.A. speak with little regard for using correct English. I realize that we all mess up with certain words but as I have traveled in the U.S.A I find that I can't even understand some people even though they were born here. What be up wit dat?

To a non-american, Americans have accents. And only the most extreme regional variations are obviously different. It's all just American.

One could argue that my received pronunciation is the official accentless English, but to anyone who doesn't speak with received pronunciation, I speak with a very English and somewhat posh accent.

I've heard scousers claim not to have an accent, because they "just speak normal", which is clearly utter fucking insanity.

We need to up the production on Death Row, Newsome needs to be kicked out of office for refusing to enforce the law Californians voted for and recently reaffirmed. Newsome proves he isn't man enough for the job.

Obviously you're pro and I'm anti,
But what about the issues with defence attorneys? The very basis of a fair and righteous justice system is the right to an effective defence. Without that, you can't possibly have a fair trial. Without a fair trial, you might fry the wrong man and have a kiddy killer still roaming free to kill again.

And it seems unlikely that no white guys commit crimes on a par with those landing people on death row. It might be a weird, statistical fluke... Might... But, if the people vote for the death penalty, how do you make sure you fry all the fuckers that cross the line of fryworthy sins, even handedly?

Though the prisons are full of dangerous white guys and there are plenty of them on Death Row they do not commit the vast majority of violent crime in California or the country writ large. That would be black and latino males between the ages of 15 and 27.

In California a death penalty case can be a huge income stream for a defense attorney. Out of the last 13 people executed in California 10 have been white men. so tell that lying bitch in L.A. to STFU.

Last time I checked (granted, it's been a while), what we call ineffective assistance of counsel could be grounds for a new trail on appeal. Doubly so in a death penalty case.

How do you ensure a good quality defence for those who can't afford to pay? Is there a bonus for winning, or do they get paid the same if they sleep through the trial?

I'll say this it took 17 years on Death Row before Harris was executed. His lawyer never had to take another client during that time and the taxpayers are not allowed under California law to know what the State paid in legal fees for him or those on death row.

I'm just yanking your chain, obviously but amongst Americans I'm considered accentless because I've lived in so many places that I don't sound like any particular regional affectation.

No matter where I go no one has any obvious preconception about where I might have lived before.

I was born in the upper midwest but until the middle of first grade I was in Louisiana so I had a fairly soft southern accent. Had we not moved when I was but a toddler I would probably sound like Jezzie.

I was in an agricultural area of California after that and most of the Southern flavor was over-written. Connecticut, and a very good school polished things up and I never did sound like people in Maine who sound a little bit like lazy, friendly bostonians. And yes a friendly Bostonian is an oxymoron.

Been in the southwest for four decades now so if anything I probably have a little bit of a twang but mostly if I'm around people that have that like texicans.
