Pfft, Dell's always busy with nubkacs.

I wonder...

if I called Dell- would I get you on the first try?

nubcaks? Is that similar to PEBCAK?

Nubcak is based upon pebcak. It's a word a friend of mine coined for someone worse than a pebcak; a total noob at computer. I theorize it stands for noob user between chair and keyboard.

If you called Dell, you wouldn't get me because I do American business support, not Canadian support. I can't even dispatch to Canada.

Oh, and I just got a haircut. I've gone from wolfboy to basically bald.

That... That sounds a lot like SkyNet...
I, for one, happily bow before our new silicon masters.

That's precisely what a friend of mine said when he saw that article.

I find it amusing as hell that you at the call centre in the middle of Canada and likely down the hall from Canadian tech support, that you can only do American support.

That's the wonder of bureaucracy.

Tell me about it.

I work for the government. Specifically the Canadian Forces. I work as a supply technician doing materiel receipts for a combat unit here. Despite what you may think, my job is not nearly as interesting as you might think, but it does have its moments.

My most notable brush with bureaucracy is an odd story.

Stuff comes in to our unit from many places, but the majority comes from Base Supply. Which happens to be in the same building as the main western Canada supply depot. So when we go to pick our stuff up, its usually all in the same bin. Last week, the person doing the pick up that day brought in a couple of packages and I set to receiving them. One box, full of sewing kits (which actually doesn't matter really), that I laboriously counted and verified, was marked for us, but apparently was not. It had been sent from the depot to base supply to be forwarded to us. So there I was, sitting with my stuff, that I could not receive in the computer, because it needed to be processed through base supply. So I had to seal the box back up, return it to the depot, and have them send it on its correct way. I figured I'd see it in a couple days and finish it then.

I wish it were that easy.

The next day, same exact box arrived with the slightly different paperwork indicating it could now be processed by me. Still fairly straightforward. Except it was directed in the system towards our secondary warehouse at the unit. Strange says I, but not that strange. So I received it, then found out the reason it was going to the secondary warehouse was that the primary warehouse had ordered it automatically from the secondary, which had no stock and had ordered from base supply, which had no stock and ordered from the depot. Still with me so far? I'm still confused about the logic of the system creating 4 separate orders to fill one need.

And it gets better.

I managed to do all the sequential receipts, then found out that the reason the primary warehouse had ordered this stuff automatically was because our personal kit account had an order created on it to get some of these sewing kits. Which is a fairly common type of order that gets finished in 1 or 2 steps. Instead it created layer after layer through the system. At last count it was at 9 or so steps, not counting the multiple steps processing it in the computer requires. Efficiency at its finest.

And last but not least...

The next day, another box of sewing kits arrives from base supply because I had ordered more on the kit account a couple days earlier because nobody had told me this automatic order (initiated by my Sargeant) was in the works.

(I apologize if this story is incomprehensible in any way. I'm trying to leave out the supply tech mumbo jumbo and mundane details that would interest only other supply techs. Also it is late for me and I is tired)

Oh and before I forget again... Thanks muchly for the files Cleric. I will make much use of the stuff I have downloaded.

Glad you like the files.
They download ok?

And as for the package hassle, I hear you.
I worked as a roofer for a summer, and managed to get myself injured.
Nothing major, just fell off of a ladder and pulled a leg muscle, but the paper work involved...

Cripes, you'd think I killed a man...
Forms in triplicate, and then again to another company/person.
Fun times.

Well, the American support floor is the floor above the Canadian support floor, and currently I work from home, but basically, it is amusing.

It took a while and I accidentally cancelled one of them twice by closing Firefox, but I got it ok.

In the vein of more bureaucracy stories, a couple months ago I got my finger caught in the door at my unit. No big deal, and the only result was that I lost my fingernail and had to grow a completely new one. But the paperwork for it went on and on to so many different people. You'd think I lost an arm or something.

Heya everybody, just got back on the intarweb after four months in Air Force Basic Military Training (yay Medical Hold, yay Get Fit Flight) and three weeks of waiting for my new laptop to arrive in the mail (yay Dell shipping estimates, three to five days my ass).

So, how's things? I just got a new Dell Inspiron laptop with a built-in webcam and a Helio Ocean cell phone (I like the unlimited data plan they have me on, and the little keyboard that slides out of the side is handy).

Nah, but I can beat the ever loving crap out of him with the blunt end of an assault rifle. Or, for that matter, shoot him at a distance with the pointy end of the rifle (Expert Small Arms)
