New Milestones Thread

Not a lit milestone-other than it wouldn't happen if I never started here-but a writing milestone.

Earlier today, I notched sale number 32,000 all time on Smashword's main site.

Hmm, maybe I should also post that in the "romance jargon" thread where a troll was putting myself, @KeithD, and a couple of other folks down, and acting like they're all that.

Finally hit 700 followers, any chance I can double that with an entry in Loving wives?
Those aren't followers, they're stalkers.

On the plus side, they'll pad your stats, on the downside they'll bring down your average score.

You’re so cynical…spoken like an author who has way too much experience in LW
I'm cynical period, sometimes with cause, sometimes it's just my nature.

But in this case, there's truth to the comment.

Trolls there will fav you, so they can see whenever you release a new story and immediately bomb it. That's not a behavior limited to LW, but its far more common there, and is getting worse as time goes on because the category has become a safe haven for a group that most sites work hard to expel.

I don’t have a big enough eyeroll gif for this one.

This, however, is somewhat accurate, depending on the content you write. I haven’t had any problems with two people in relatively romantic scenarios, or even one night stands. Anything involving humiliation, BDSM, group (at least involving married folks, since I have no group stories with unmarried folks), etc. tends to not do as well, though. Que sera sera.

In the spirit of not hi-jacking a good thread, I'll reply in PM. Its time I did anyway.

Yes, possibly. I wouldn't worry too much about what Lovecraft wrote. What I've found is that the really nasty Loving Wives commenters/voters hit right away, but over time my LW stories rise a bit in score and I continue to get favorites and the comments trend nicer. The LW readership is not a knuckle-dragging monolith. It's very diverse. There are thousands and thousands of readers who enjoy stories about wives having sex outside the bounds of marriage as a fun, sexy experience. So, while the nasty readers will drive your score down and leave you some nasty (but often extremely entertaining, if you're like me) comments, I think that is more than offset by knowing you are connecting with a large, appreciative readership.

If you have the stomach for it, try it.

If you like the idea of writing a story purely to target and win over an audience, then the best sort of story to write for LW is one where the wife cheats on a blameless husband and gets her comeuppance. I personally don't care for those stories, but there's a huge, appreciative readership for them.

If you write a different kind of story in that category, I think you take your chances, but that can be part of the fun. One of the comments I received recently on my 7-year-old Loving Wives story was "What a contemptible bunch of characters. 5 stars." I loved that.

Yeah, my Hey Nineteen isn't very typical, and honestly, it was a stretch to even include it in LW. There's no cheating, there's no revenge, and the actually-loving wife has been dead for two years. It has lots of very negative comments and an H.

I just wrote a different kind of story for LW, "Aftermath, or "I Can't Go for That"".

One of my favorite comments is:

Christ, what a tale!!! I need a luke warm bath and some sharp razor-blades. I'm sure you meant well using rape as a catalyst for sexual enjoyment. But honestly, the outcome of her finding a benign rapist with a band of fellow rapists was not a successful resolution to this tale. Jesus, the counselor wasn't much help to either of them. Poor taste all round.

And here I was just aiming for people to vomit!

The non-consent event was prior to the start of the story. I wanted to show the trolls that it's not a Martian Slut Ray, but sometimes things beyond our control which changes people. And sometimes, it's the person who doesn't change who is worse. It's risen to 2.86 with over 600 votes!

And the milestone there is what?
That was an example for Duleigh on what he might do in LW to double his followers, an example of Simon's suggestion to write something different.

Have you ever had someone needing a razor blade after reading your story? Now THAT was different!

I was hoping to announce half a million views of my 5-story series "My Little Sister Sal" ("Too Cold Not to Fuck" etc.) one of these days. Nearly there now: 497k, to be more or less precise, and going up by about 500 a day.

Last night I uploaded a new instalment, so I expect to hit the milestone soon. Still, it feels like cheating, as if I'm breaking some rule that doesn't exist, or cutting a corner. It's stupid, of course: there's no intrinsic merit in getting those last 3000 views organically. In fact, 500k is not meaningfully better than 497k.

Even so, it's bugging me. Just not enough to unsubmit the new story and wait another week.

So here's my milestone: "My Little Sister Sal" very nearly has half a million views!

Not much, having a little story break until i post a new one... but had a couple of authors comment on stories and follow me, so that's a morale boost

Looks like I might get there before the new story goes live:

A milestone of sorts: I created a Lit account one year ago today (or a year and a day allowing for 29 Feb).
My first story posted on 7 July last year. My 100th is scheduled for 7 July this year.

100 stories in 1 year is an incredible milestone!! You have done yourself and all of your AH compatriots mighty proud.

A hundred stories in a year?! Is it possible to learn this power?
