New Poetry Recommendations

Tuesday: En martes, ni te cases ni te embarques

Whoa! What a lovely group of New Poem offerings. I've been blessed with my Tuesdays of late. I can't even begin to express how admirably today rocked. And there were twenty-three poems today! A special mention for the Lit virgins, Demon_Ted with Acceptance, SensuousLady with Infinite Sensuality (oh, SL...thanks for starting my day off RIGHT), and sybarite_sympath with a visitor in the Master's house. Nicely done, you three. You are more than welcome.

I do have a few personal favorites.

A lot of people have found this one disturbing, but I enjoyed it immensely. slavetouch has an excellent method of taking you to the unknown, and does it mercilessly with ...her dream.... The constant use of third person could have been gimmicky, but ends up perfect in several ways. Dirty, dirty girl. Thanks, hon.

Best first line goes to cavu182's orbital planes.

"Dark as the inside of a cow."

Yeah. Nice.

But today's MVP, out of some damn stiff competition, is MagicFingers69. Brother, take a bow. Three excellent poems. Please, check out The beast within, Sleepless love, and Shaken.

Beat that, Wednesday! (Hi, LeBroz)

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday

Ok, it's not Tuesday anymore but I just got around to reading the poems submitted yesterday and I really liked Fists by lindiana. It's short and rather terse with a haunting quality that really got to me. Well done!

Edited to add:

And then I read Raw by 4degrees, which really is. He twists his words back and forth and weaves a maze of a poem. And I'd highly recommend Blowing with Mr Escher by the estimable bogusbrig. It's good.

I apologize for the lack of links on the last few poems, but my computer is screwing up (as usual) and I have to go dry my hair and run to work. (It's effing 11 degrees out there--sans the wind chill. I don't want an ice sculpture on my head this morning.)

Wednesday's Review

.

Good! Today's poems are up fairly early. I've waaaay too much to do today and too little time in which to do it. Perhaps it has something to do with this holiday shopping season?

I lucked out today. Specs got hit with 23 yesterday and my load's a light half dozen. Sad to say today's offerings have little that are very special.

vixen_2006 continues her prolific ways with 9 posted so far in December. Today's offerings are Expectations and Falling. While not spectacular there seems some promise with an active imagination; proper spelling could stand a hand (your vs you're) in her latter verse.

On the other hand, I found another couple pieces to recommend from Lit's treasured vault.

irishcatsmeow has an amusing piece in Blind Date. Too bad this is just the perspective of the woman headed for her blind date.

seranade starts us with a wake-up call with her black water. A quirky piece whose final word may just cause you to go and reread the piece.

There you have it, a light day today. None of Specs' treasures, but what there is you ought to read, vote, and comment on ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry. And perhaps you'll welcome and strengthen a future member poet.

Thursday - So many children

So, brief tangent. I recently stated teching at an elementary school. I'm getting my tubes tied. It's imperative.

Okay, onto the poems. The are six today. Not to reflect the Chicago weather, but none really grabbed me. Tuesday was great, though.

December 8, 2006

There are 32 new poems posted today. This could take a while. I'm off to read and will be back with my favorites later.

In the meantime, here's a poem I found with the poetry spinner to get us started:

Office Monkey
by Smaugfire ©

always want her attention, her eyes, her goofballishness
the silliness could kill drudgery at 300yrds
she’s sick sick and twisted behind those eyes with
slapstick shrubbery knowledge and two coconut halves

her smile always bludgeons boredom, those eyes, so lost
in them, color is meaningless, punk girl loves
White Strips & Strokes, black nail polish & blue eyeliner
nothing serious, nothing sacred, nothing goth about her

short stuff, tomboy, fetch monkey for
my water and humor, the comical cubical entertainer
think I’ll buy her a collar and take
her home with me... feed her bananas

dark skin, she’s never been to reality
loves sponge bob & groty stuffage
running all about, can’t even work hard
at not working, shuffle them papers.

saw all those bands, got all those stickers
the glittery lunch box and Donkey-Kong board game
writing online diaries for friends and stalkers
yea, she’s a real hamburger helper gourmet.

December 8 Redux

Here are my picks for the day:

lobomao has three submissions today. They're all good (though two could use some editing imo), but my favorite is matinee in which he ponders the meaning of a brief encounter. This poem, like many by him, is an interesting mix of twisty wordplay and stop-you-in-your-tracks truths:

Eyes blindly led followed forward
Folded open reveling in revealed skin
Held tight as jealous petals might
Bekon wanton bees a little deeper in
I smile a wicked smile and pretend
I am richer for all this in the end

You may also enjoy reading his three murders on monday and Everyman ponders the odds.

My Erotic Trail gives us Twilight of the Night, which is short (and frankly seems interrupted to me), but has some great lines:

Under a mime faced moon
two souls embraced
warmth of the sun
where bodies lay

Twinkle stars
in terrestrial eyes
wrapped in a milky-way,
shadows and fireflies

I also like Zephyr by TLCwFire. This is his first submission to Lit and I look forward to reading more from him.

When you open up like a flower,
Enchanting, beautiful flower,
My fairest, loveliest flower,
Your gentle breeze, your fragrant breeze,
Fills my heart.

Sweet Maria2394 gives us a short, cohesive poem in I, the familiar. It balances beautifully somewhere between bitterness and regret and, for its brevity, packs some punch.

Your smile used to be mine
but now, when we kiss
even I can taste the longing you possess
for the nape of your virgin's neck.

EmilHoff has a first submission to Lit with RSVP. It's a kinky little invitation, and too short too quote here, but go read it for its racy little thrill. :)

Thunder Fruit by vampiredust is also brief and metaphorical. I'd argue for changing the last line, which seems counterintuitive to me (because thunder follows lightning, not the other way around), but otherwise it doesn't miss a step.

We ate thunder fruit plucked from the underworld
last night, using our sins as knives to unpeel
the skin before swallowing it whole.

And finally I recommend Yarn Puppet by the lovely swirly one. It's really a teriffic poem though I think the title doesn't quite fit it because the content suggests marionettes rather than yarn puppets to me, but really that's a nitpick cause I hold her to a higher standard lol. It has just enough quirk of detail to draw the reader into the story of love that dances on wires until it tangles with confusion--but never unravels.

We promised: no edges,
let the weeds grow
over onto the walk. We promised:
no ties or knots. No wonder
I have yet to be able to weave our story.
Unpackaged, without instructions,
without a marketing plot, no tangle free dancing,
some kind of endless braid.

Please read, vote, and comment on these and--if you please--all today's entries. There may be others there today that catch your fancy. If so, please recommend them in this thread.

Stay warm (it's coooold here in Maine) and have a great weekend. Write some poetry. ;)

Peace,
Angeline

Things worth a second look
Our Happen Stance by Preta
One of the better new writers, I honestly don't know what he is doing, but some of it is done well. Well worth visiting.

microwave by Senna Jawa
The fact that you can push 99 on a microwave may confuse some as to what you really get. Enuff said.

The President Has Cancer by ramonathompson
I did not know that! It pays to keep up with current events, in new poems.

since Tzara is busy channeling
How to Channel Courtney Love

it appears a wonderful new writer  may be channeling something besides up his nose
Bennie the tiger by ParrotDee
I would say it needs more polish, but since who he channeled never polished anything but a bar table with his nose I forgive the ampersands.

Ask not for whom the Taco Bell tolls.

Comment, vote, leave names. :rose:
Disclaimer
I really don't think any of them are extraordinary, but they may be just a little different than the standard fare.

Tuesday: En martes, ni te cases ni te embarques

Hey y'all.

10 New Poems today. AnAmericanDarling has an excellent short piece up called Goin' Easy. AAD is one of my favorite writers on the site. Always naughty, always clever, always twisting away from cliche, except when using it to an advantage. Sweet.

Some nice work today, but AAD was the only poet that made me do a double take.

Wednesday's Review

.

Another light day. Hopefully we'll find some good originality without any checkered pasts. This is the part I call reading live. It's where as I read each piece I either comment on it here or let it by.

SexyJedi has a small piece today in My Fists. I have this image of a small petite woman kick boxer; think I'll stay celibate.

My Erotic Trail has a bit of a thinking piece out in his Thinking like a Star.

Since last week I've been burrowing through Lit's massive archival treasures and here are just a few I think worthy of your attentions:

SeattleRain had a fun piece out a couple years back, bovine road side that had me thinking of Chick Fil A and their commercials.

WickedEve had a piece out nearly two years ago that seems a bit different from some of her other writings, Bread. Give it a read and see what you think.

smithpeter had a piece out nearly 5 years ago that packs quite a wallop in, Breakup. I didn't even see it coming till the very end; makes you want to read it all over again.

neonurotic had an excellently descriptive piece out in, Breathless Before 99 Steps. The only thing I didn't feel was the bone chilling cold of the Washington coast; the rest all seems so real.

WickedEve has another good piece out that I came across, a social commentary that could be about any small town but {having lived in the South} seems to fit especially well any small southern town, Buzz About Bea.

That's it for now. I've several gems in reserve for next week. Don't want to overload you with too many of the better pieces. Want to give the new poets and their pieces a chance as well! In any case, read, vote, comment ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry.

Thursday

Hey y'all.

Some really nice work in New Poems on Thursday. Particularly:

bartanka by Senna Jawa

Feline Cannibal by Jamison

Back in the day by Lady_Blackhawk

Sympathy by cantata

Each great in their own way, but if you're going for "hot' then check out Jamison's piece first. Funny, go over to Senna Jawa. Scary and sad, hit up Lady-Blackhawk. Fucking awesome overall, then there's cantata.

Have a lovely weekend, y'all.

12/15/06

There are two new poems submitted today. Read 'em and if doing so is your cup of tea, please vote and comment.

For my recommendation today, I offer a poem by a poet who was here relatively briefly, but contributed some marvelous poems in that short time: Linbido

I'm Not A Poet
by Linbido ©

Oh, to translate,
decipher, unfold
this state of abstraction
and diligent distraction,
to caress ideas,
clarify ideals,
construct and convert
into human tongue.

Oh, to wield a pen,
to chisel, carve, curve
letters into words
into lines, spines, hearts
and open minds
so unrefined,
unguarded
from the impact
that only language
welded into weapons
can muster.

Oh, to script
the storm inside
into black and white
so beautiful, precise
perfect linguistic
power tripping,
to turn the fire
inside out
and let them read
my electricity.

But here I sit
numb, tongue tied
and all I can wield
is my wish
to break the dam
and flood the universe
with this...

This!

This raging whatever
that can not will not
take form and be written
nor heard.
Hiding, taunting, teasing
just out of reach.

Today
I'm not a poet,
so this will have to do.

Peace,
Angeline

Its Christmas Week

Last minute shopping, traffic, too many parties with too much food and ale...hope we all have a safe and happy holiday filled with laughter and dance..
I am proposing an idea for Christmas day next Monday..any new poems are reviewed by
as many poets as possible...a christmas present for the posts on Christmas...a lot of us will be unavailable so pitch in those who are at home ok...

Two poems by Liar are my pick

Zen Of A Gravedigger by Minor Monster and
Words Don’t Stick Like Velcro by Minor Monster
the second having the edge with its alliteration
"when my momentum
turned from slipstreamed
to slippery," delightfully drips from the tongue ...well strung words make it rule the thread today...

Anymore thoughts are welcome go read enjoy and drive safe...blue

Actual Thursday Review...I Hope

Hey y'all. Thanks to those that've sent "Get Well Soon" messages. I fly to Florida later tonight so that might help, but for now I'm still in a very medicated place. Anyway, there are 10 New Poems up today. Here is my pick:

Bruised Thigh by KittenishJane

Everyone have a great holiday. See y'all in a bit.

Happy Shopping Crazy Weekend, Poeticizers!

There were 27 (!) new poems posted Saturday, apparently a bit too late for MET, the normal reviewer for the day, to read and comment on. He's probably somewhere standing in line trying to buy the last Playstation 3 in his area for an ungrateful nephew who will break it within a week.

Anywho, that's a lot of poems, several of which are interesting, but I will just mention one in particular, because, well because I liked it the best. So there.

Go read catch of the day by normal jean. It's short, but distinctive--an odd and vivid little poem.

Then go read everything else too, why dontcha?
