New Poetry Recommendations

Angeline, goddess of the poetry reviews, thank you.
I'm drying (edit: drying? It's suppose to be dying! lol) to read small things and I will.
I second S.J.'s poem.

You're welcome. You do know I'm doing this every Friday now, right? I think you were in the middle of your cold ickiness when I volunteered.

You meant I was drying. I was just drying the dishes. We don't need no new-fangled dishwashers around here.

(And yes I, a moderator, just went against moderator rules and posted drivel in this thread. But I can make it right. I recommend everything WickedEve ever wrote. Ok, almost everything.)

A few More

for Monday, November 20:

The Dove and the Worm by steve porter, which is just marvelous, full of images that touch every sense.

A symbol of peace

descended from heaven,

a fallen angel to earth,

dropping down down dropping

down from celestial light,

white as cloudpuff but then

primitive as a pteranodan,

clawed, beaked and beady eyed,

strut hunt peck peck hunt strut.

My Name Means Love Song, which is SpectaclesInSkirt's riff on Eliot's Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock (and which you can read before Spec's poem in the November Challenge Thread).

Lonely ships in fleshed out ports:
Sheets that wrap like winter coats
For unmoored and frosty boats
To keep you silent and anchored...
Please don't ask what I am thinking,
Stay a while and prevent my sinking.

And finally I recommend If by Quiet_NY_Tech, which is short (too short to show here), but manages to convey an elegaeic feel.

My two cents. That is all. ;)

:rose:

There are a few poems out today that I had to mention ...

A brief journey into naturalized american from our friend Senna Jawa

Put a scare into your night with As Nights Are Growling by Minor Monster
In this one, there is more than the eyes do see ... ;)

We also welcome a new poet on board
Unbridled_Passion with her rendition of the Sexual Alphabet

My pick for the day goes to

AnnaSwirls for her poem Catching Up With The Dead

I know there is more, I really have not finished my reading.
Please go read The New Poems and leave a comment or two.

What is right? Wrong? Could be better?

That's why we're here ... right~

Happy Reading and hoping I didn't step on any toes ...

Wednesday's Review

.

The day before Thanksgiving and the roads will be getting nuts. :nana: :nana: Think I'll do some grocery shopping, then go get some wine {for after I get home!}.

The New Poems listing for today seems rather short (so far); only 3 are up.

bogusbrig presents a rather somber picture in his Late, Just When.

Over the weekend, while digging through Lit's treasured vault, I discovered a pair of poets to highlight. I'll leave you hanging about one of them till next week; for now I'll just say she's rather gifted {and hasn't posted lately}. This week I'm highlighting a prolific poet most long-time members are sure to recognize, smithpeter. I've only had time to read a few, but here are a pair you might want to read:

a good hamburger might taste rather good after undergoing turkey overload.

Bad Friday ought to resonate especially well today for folks trying to get the workday to end in the face of a 4-day weekend.

Now while you're rushing to get ready for the big day tomorrow, take a little break and read, vote, comment ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry.

Sorry!

A special thanks to RhymeFairy who saved my ass yesterday. I had an unexpectedly awful session at the dentist's and had to be carried home by friends and family. Have a great holiday, all.

The Lit community is always willing to help when someone's ass needs saving. How about your breasts, are they in grave danger?

Re: Angeline's post 11/20/06

I thank you for your kind words, and for picking up on the lesser said that most don't realise. Your input is much appreciated.

November 24th

and there do not appear to be any new poems posted yet. I guess they have the day off, too. :)

So I Now Have

two malfunctioning computers in my house. I just spent an hour doing the new poems reviews for today (and I was almost done when the screen froze and the computer shut down. Sigh.

All I can tell you is you should read today's offerings by Tzara, Tristesse2, and Senna Jawa. They're all really good. Of course you might prefer others, but those were my picks.

Sorry for the lack of links, but I'm outta here before this damn screen freezes yet again.

If anyone wishes to expound on these (or other) offerings today, please do. I'm off to sulk.

Frustratedly,
Angeline

Tuesday: En martes, ni te cases ni te embarques

Good God, today rocks! Please, please check out the New Poems page and comment. Peruse, enjoy, they're almost all really wonderful.

But, alas, I must pick a scant few for particular commendation. Very well.
MinorMonster is today's MVP with Faidros on the 7th pepper shot, Fudge and the things it does to me, and The Organic Architect. My personal favorite is the last, because of lines like:

and acorns on the outer limbs
fell off, one by one.
Some into soil, to sprout
in cities near and countries far
and always, almost always,
coming back for Christmas.

Others into dirt, to rest there,
leaving chairs empty.

But they're all good. Seriously. Check out the riches.

Wednesday's Review

.

A lighter load today, not like the riches Specs had yesterday. But still, there are 3 pieces that caught my eye.

seannelson has an odd piece up today with a title sure to make annaswirls' list next week, At Hermano's Mexican Dream Theater.

My Erotic Trail brings us a humorous solution to the mistletoe problem in Murdered Mistletoe.

RhymeFairy has today's best piece IMHO in her I Want You !!.

As promised last week, here's another find from Lit's poetic vault. Today I'm suggesting y'all check out JUDO. She has quite an impressive listing, so for now I'll just mention a couple I've gone over. But don't let just the mention of a couple stop you from checking out all she has to offer!

A Dream of Ocean Wine - A Sonnet ~ a salty mermaid treat.

A Meal Sharing will surely satisfy the heartiest appetite.

Now give the rest of today's offerings a look. Perhaps you'll find something that melts your butter, so read, vote, comment ~ it's the least you can do. Above all, comment ~ a fair exchange for the pleasure of reading free poetry.

SiS is suffering a hair emergency and asked me to do the reviews this AM. It is actually a great opportunity for me as I rarely get over to the sumbission side of Lit anymore. Plus, I am laid-up after knee surgery so I'm not going anywhere anyway. :( Forgive me if I start to hallucinate-- vicodin is powerful stuff.

Not many new poems today, but I enjoyed reading them all. Here are a few that stuck with me:

Angeline takes us back to a charming childhood in 528 + Infinity. This poem never quite delivers on the profundity implied in the title or opening lines, but it is an Angeline poem, and that means fresh and beautiful imagery (...the dogwood a spindly shiver,/bare brittle...)

Bogusbrig throws the oppressive blanket of social inertia over lofty ambitions in Farewell Superman. I confess, I hadn't thought of Superman as a crossdresser before.

MinorMonster gets caught in a Cartesian Crunch as he contemplates his six-syllable-old self.

Digits are a theme in Lindiana's Fingers and Syndra Lynn's Beneath the Tilden Pines. Fingers are broken a bit raggedly, and Tilden Pines wanders off the path a bit, but they are both enjoyable reads.

Cavu182 shares a lazy winter day with us in Led Zeppelin green. This poem nicely blurs its time frame, but abandons some wonderful imagery. A little cohesian will make this good poem an excellent one.

Two new contributors today: YenaVamp and vixen_2006 would undoubtedly enjoy some encouragement.

Those are my recommendations. Kick back with a cup of coffee, wrap your knee in a cryo-cuff and have a great day.

12/01/2006

Happy December, poets. Today’s my lucky day because there are some absolute gems of new poems posted today. Here are my favorites:

Meager Inspiration is by a newer poet to Lit, Preta. The poem is wistful and spiritual and mixes longing for meaningfulness with a reality that is tragically human and small by comparison. Great pairing of title and theme.

How I drank indigo tea in some
third world god box and stained
their unglazed toilets with blue piss,
staggering down unpaved alleys,
like Kerouac,
taking each minute like a dishrag,
wringing all sensations,
sour sponge bitter, into my veins,
ringing a fleshy temple bell with each thrust
of my ever expanding cock consciousness,
then leaving hung over but wiser,
and empty of another need.

Empty Stage by DeepAsleep is a tour de force (as only he can write them) on a theme he often visits: the public and personal politics of poetry readings. The piece is a wonderful mix of poetry and prose and is a personal narrative that swings between fear and confidence (a la Prufrock). In spite of its seeming rambling, the poem strikes me as being cohesive with the image of homelessness used in various creative ways that tie it all together.

i am sick
at the bar
writing poems about the bartender
and the way that she pours drinks and i wish
i could write sensitive sex poems
about the softness where thighs meet
but i've always been the, "lay back, baby
& pretend your feet hate each other!" type,
so the girl at the end of the bar,
the one with calliope hair & corinthian legs -
she's got tits like homeless children, cos
don't i wanna take them home & hold 'em &
tell them everything's gonna be alright -
she got no interest in me and my
hastily scribbled poems about scuffmarks on my shoes
cos she's infatuated with a fuckpoet
& a sewing circle.

I’m not Irish (though living with eagleyez has blarneyed my up to the point where I now refer to myself as “McJew”), but I was caught in the Spell of Arainn, the second poem submitted to Lit by IrishAngel. This a a lovely lover’s journey to a mythical Eire that is lush with sensual imagery.

Had we tripped or fallen, our journey
would have had a different ending.
Even so we returned wet with clouds,
already knowing the flight of fish,
the drowning of birds,
already seduced by the edge
of world, suspended beyond
ourselves in the maelstrom.

Older Works, the first submission by scottmcc begins with a reference to Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy and follows the cycle of a love affair through 25 (!) parts. It’s a lot to read and probably could be edited down, but I found its honesty and searching quality very moving.

23. Shadow’s Confession:
I try to be the light, I respect the brightness, yet I cannot fully become
I have tasted the darkness, it was sweet for a time, yet I cannot put that behind me
A change to purge myself of the light, after I would still be a shadow
To enjoy who I am fully, yet mourn my loses truly
True yet false, the shadows are still my place

Please read, vote and comment (if you are so moved) on today’s poems. You may have other offerings from today’s list that you really enjoyed: if so, recommend them in this thread.

Have a wonderful, poetic weekend.

Peace,
Angeline
