Heart of Darkness, as far as i can remember...

Conrad uses makes a noticeable effort to make sure that the most horrifying things are described to the minute detail, but that the overall scenery is somewhat obscure and lacking definition. The tone throughout is that of confusion and the progression downriver is paced at the same degree of the slow descent into madness of the characters involved.
