And conversely, you can be 21, but never become a Jersey girl. I think being a real Jersey Girl requires a certain je ne sais quoi, a certain undefinable something. Like knowing how to drive, not necessarily what you drive. Like knowing the truly cool bars and the actually good restaurants, as opposed to the trendy ones, and the actual cool nights to go there. Like knowing the sunrise is one of the best parts of the day, even though, when you're in a horn dog frame of mind, that's not usually where the action is. (Couldn't resist giving you a little wink and a nod on that one.)

So what exactly is involved in becoming a Master Gardener? There's an actual certification process? Does that mean you could go design landscapes, or implement landscape design? Sounds like a wonderfully zen-like way to make a living, or just pass the time, and something that I for one would surely not have the patience for!

And knowing just the barest of details, bravo to you for articulating your own needs and mving beyond the roles that you and everyone else thought you should be confined to. Awesome! I always find it amazing how much is possible when we work up the courage to ask or even demand what we want out of life, and find out that what we thought was such a big deal isn't, in the end, really as big a deal as we thought, and may, in fact, be much easier than expdected. (As you can tell, I can relate to the overall issue, although for different reasons than yours.) And I am glad you could do it without leaving. Really, how nice is that? I am glad that worked out for you. And yeah, you waited maybe longer than you should have, but so what? Better late than never, or better now than 10 years from now. As Firestorm observes, a Jersey Girl never quits!

The Master Gardener certification is through your county Extension Office and local college. It's a 4 month course covering all aspects of horticulture and gardening for the home gardener. We then man the County Extension Hotline answering community gardener's questions (everything from what's eating my tree, to when do I fertilize my lawn, to what bug is this?) We teach community classes on things like composting, and help plant gardens at schools and community parks. I could work for a landscape designer, but there is a lot more to design work than I have been trained for. You can get a whole college degree in landscape design. I just love to get my hands in the dirt and watch flowers grow. It's the other thing that brings me peace besides being at the beach.

Congrats on the certification, Beachlover! I'm envious, as I appear to have a black thumb and kill any plant or flower within my reach. Was given a 30 year old spider plant when I got married...it survived 10 cross-country moves before it got to me...I had it a week...it died. LOL

Seaside is okay, nothing compared to Wildwood. Seaside gets kinda of dangerous once night falls.

I dunno...last time I was in Wildwood, I was kinda scared to be outside at night. It's changed a lot! Trying to find somewhere else to take a 9 year old who LOVES the beach!

A good beach to take a 9 year old...hmmm. Belmar is nice during the day. There is a boardwalk, but no games and rides and all that fun stuff that the others have. At night it becomes a haven for drunk college kids.

Beachlover, unfortunately I am with Firestorm on the gardening thing. Anything more complicated than a house plant is beyond my capabilities. Each summer I have a few planters of begonias and such on the porch, and they're beautiful in bloom, but the only things that make it through the winter are the three spider plants I've had forever. Sigh. But a man's got to know his limitations.

Believe it or not I've never been in Wildwood, or Seaside, but I've heard Wildwood is more and more the family haven now. But Seaside is dangerous? Really? Is that dangerous, dangerous, or is it just drunken college kids frolicking? Very interesting. You learn something new every day.

Jerseyman, Seaside at night can be a dangerous place. You get a lot of "gangbangers," bikers and people just looking for trouble. Not to mention all the drunks you get from the various bars. You usually see quite a few cops on every corner. It's not like you'll get jumped if you go there or anything, but you do have to watch yourself at night. Point Pleasant has Jenkinson's, which draws people from New York over on the weekends and during the summer. Tons of drunk college kids and guys with big gold chains dangling from their necks. Manasquan and Belmar and the big college towns. The kids come and rent nearly every house. It's like Mardi Gras at night down there, with drunks all over the place. Kinda bums me out in a way. So many gorgeous college girls, and I go home alone lol.

Ok...so now that I'm done sucking up to Jerseyman and Beachlover (LOL) I have a serious question about this state....

Are they serious about this smoking ban??? I swear...I'll never go to another bar after the 15th! Can't drink without smoking!!! I even know non-smokers who will smoke when drinking. I also know a lot of bar owners are gonna lose a lot of money. I know I'm gonna get hammered by people who don't smoke...but jeez...
