Im Back!

Oh Man I missed this thread!

Okay so here is the story. Every morning my kitten wakes me up at around five am. I refill his bowl full of food and then he eats and runs off to the living room for a few hours. I did not know why until I started staying up with him. Apparently he loves to sit in front of the window and watch the sun rise over Brooklyn from Manhattan. I thought I would share the pictures that I took with you all if that is okay, I uploaded them to my blog to make it easier:

Beautiful pics, KitKat!

Great shots Phil. And I do love me some motorcycle racing :D

Thanks! That was a "track day" at Homestead-Miami Speedway and there is almost unlimited access to the track sidelines and pits. I could walk around and take pictures from all kinds of angles.

Looks like Ray finally got his links worked out. :) Love that sunrise!

Yeps, flickr are changing the way the site operates and this includes link production. I went back to using the old method and it worled fine.

If it ain't broke.....

A sunset and thunderstorm combo. :)

Terrific images everyone.

Your kitten is one smart cat KitKat :)

Ice cool clarity in the motorcycle pics Phil.

The 'sun rise' pic Ray looks as though it has been hanging in a gallery. Is the pic in a frame? or is it a digital frame?

Spectacular cloud formation FC.

I wanted to try this just to see what techniques I should use, and let me tell you, taking pictures of a mirrored object is a bitch! It reflects every damn thing including your fingers and other objects in the room. This kind of subject really compels you to control the light and force it to be only where you want it to be.

The watch was a gift from an ex and I wear it often, so it has a few scratches and nicks. The crystal is sapphire, so it hasn't a single scratch, though I did have to clean it after I took a few pictures and noticed some smudges in the photos.

The "ice cubes" are some kind of super clear plastic in random shapes used to simulate ice for beverage photos. I bought them on Amazon for $20.

The only thing I would do differently next time is hold an additional piece of white paper just above the watch to give a little reflection off the top of the band to differentiate it from the dark background. (This is why I love photography: I learn something new almost every time I take a photo.) EDIT: I couldn't stand it so I went back and reshot the photo (everything was still in place) with the aforementioned white blocking paper instead of the black. I like it much better than the original.

These are behind-the-scenes shots of the setup I was using. It took me a while to get the position of the snoot (the long, dark tube) just right so it would illuminate the features on the dial without reflecting directly back into the lens. I found the position had to be exact—too high and it wouldn't produce a shine on the hands and letters of the dial; too low and it would blow out the crystal to pure white.

What I couldn't show here is that I had to hand-hold a black sheet of cardboard between the softbox (big square light source) and the white background to cut down the brightness of the background. Basically, I reached around the snoot and snapped the frame while holding the cardboard.

The stuff in the foreground was used for earlier attempts at the photo.

Here you can clearly see a little piece of cardboard I trimmed to fill the wristband of the watch and make it stand up and give the band a round shape. Typically, a photographer will use a piece of wire for this, but I couldn't find a single piece of stiff wire in my whole house. I was even prepared to cut up a coat hanger, but had none.

KitKat - nice captures of your cats view and during the thunderstorms. I wish I had my camera charged yesterday, we had a lovely sunset amidst dark and white clouds!

RayB - Nice captures! I've got to work on a few moon shots myself, been cloudy all week!

Ekserb - wonderful colours in the pics! love them

FC - nice capture! :)

Wonderful work again Ekserb! you put a lot of work into your shots and it translates into amazing pictures :)

This one is really intriguing, Kitkat. Almost looks like you've manipulated it, what with the green just on the rocks. Doesn't matter either way. Nice bit of photography, as are all of the other 'Big Misty Apple' shots.

I have not done a thing, the moss developed over those rocks for the last few years. Those are actually broken pieces of the old promenade that they chiseled apart to make way for the new one.

Ekserb, I've saved your post for future reference. Really appreciate the behind the scenes look, and also admire your dedication. Is your name really Bond, James Bond?

Unfortunately for you, yes, it is my name. Now I'll have to kill you.

I'm licensed to do that, you know.
