I had a photo shoot scheduled today with one of the models I've shared here before, but it was postponed due to the rainy weather. Instead I decided to go out with my camera and umbrella and find something to take a picture of. I had a pretty good day!

Sadly, some of my favorite subjects, the iguanas, weren't around today. I wondered if the garden staff had finally succeeded in eradicating their population (they are terribly destructive to the plants and flowers of the garden), but forgot to ask on my way out.

Then I went downtown to check out some urban blight and got these before and during a torrential rainstorm:

Wow these pictures are amazing. You truly have a gift! My mother hates iguanas down in FL so she would have been elated in your situation lol!

Thank you!

The iguanas are known to be pests, but they certainly do love posing for pictures. I have hundreds of photos of the little guys from past trips to Fairchild.

Phil I seriously think you could take a picture of a rotting apple and still make it look beautiful. Just saying....

Well now... some excellent shots being posted. I'm quite envious.

Sorry for my absence, but my wife's just out of hospital so I'm on duty as carer/pack mule :D

Went into town a few days ago for a local festival thing and took a few shots, and then noticed masses of dust specs. Hopefully come payday I can get it cleaned off the sensor.

Don't waste your money on a professional cleaning or some over-priced "sensor cleaning kit." Go to your local art supply store and buy a good quality nylon bristle paint brush with a flat profile and about 3/4-inch wide. Also get a can of compressed air (not CO2).

Clean the brush bristles with dishwashing soap and let it dry for a day. After cleaning, don't touch the bristles with your fingers or anything else that may have an oily residue. The next day, clean out a bathroom of all towels and anything that may contain dust or lint. (If your bathroom has a vent for central air conditioning, turn off the AC.) Bring your camera, the compressed air, and the brush into the bathroom and close the doors. Run the shower with cold water for about ten minutes (this cleans the air of any dust particles). Turn off the water. Squeeze a shot of compressed air across the brush bristles. Nylon picks up a static charge when air passes across it and this charge will make it sticky to the dust particles on your sensor. Kinda like a dust magnet.

Now put your camera in the "cleaning" mode. This will lock the shutter open, usually until you turn off the camera or until the battery dies (so make sure you have a fully charged battery before you begin). With the clean, dry brush, swipe across the sensor with a single motion using just the tips of the bristles (no need to press down), then lift the brush and do the same thing in the other direction with the other side of the brush. Now stop. Don't put those bristles back onto the sensor until you've checked the sensor to see if it's cleaner than when you started.

The best way to check for dust particles is to stop down the lens to it's smallest aperture (ƒ22-32, depending on the lens), point the camera at a clear section of the sky, and shoot a frame with the focus set to its minimum distance. The defocused sky and tight aperture will exaggerate any dust spots, and you can make them even more apparent by adjusting the image for maximum contrast. Do this before and after cleaning and you should see a reduction in the largest particles.

This will probably not get all the dust off your sensor, but it should make a big difference in what you can see in the photos. Plus, it should cost less than ten dollars for the brush and the compressed air.

Best wishes for your wife!

Wow, Ekserb, your latest pics are great! The colors on the botanical pics are wonderful, and you really captured that "after the rain" feel on the urban pics, as well as the quiet desolation of cities. I'm so not going to post here now. :)

No, no, no! Please don't stop posting! I can't keep this thread alive by myself (though sometimes it seems like I'm trying to). :)

Oh, you son of a bitch. How dare you play the big breast card? ;)

Not just breasts, butts, too. Big bouncy butts. OK, I don't want to turn this into a discussion thread, but when I don't have pics to post, that's all I can do! :D

Having found a way around Flickr's link-back issues, here are a few shots I got at the weekend in Winchester Cathedral.

As an atheist, I find the very idea of such a lavish and wildly extravagant church obscene and detestable, but they sure are pretty to look at. Not too many churches like that in America, I'm afraid.

I wish when I was stationed in Germany that I had been as interested in photography as I am now. There was a lot of history there that was ripe for a picture or two. I remember visiting a church in Heidelberg (I think) that was over 600 years old. It was built before Columbus came to America to rape and slaughter the native Americans! Good times....

I'm not a religious person myself.

However, the Cathedral has been standing where it is for over a thousand years, so I don't really think it matters what you or I believe (or not) - it'll still be there long after we've shuffled off.... :)

Oh, I'm sure the evidence of our collective fear of the unknown will be here long enough for the next race of inhabitants to look at it and laugh their asses off at our ignorance.

There have been so many wonderful photos posted since I was last here I hardly know where to start.

Th Cathedral: amazing architecture and Phil your downtown Miami shots (?) have a great mood; I like the tone you've used.

What's the old saying: "Jesus saves and the Pope spends".........sad but true.

The basic premise of religion (all kinds) is sound I think; it's how man chooses to interpret those religions and use them for his own benefit, that's the problem. "It's the will of God"!..................yeah right.

I'm not a religious person.

Very cute KitKat... looks a lot like a cat I lost a couple of years ago. Was an absolute terror to photograph.
