Just a dragonfly that finally landed long enough so i could take the picture.

I once read that dragonflies and damselflies will return to a perch almost every time after they've been disturbed, so I tried it. Turns out it was true! Every time I've scared off a dragonfly, it came right back to where it was and I was now prepared for a perfect picture. And if they flew off again, I would just wait for another chance. 😃

That's cool. i'll remember that.

When a camera's focal plane is something other than perfectly perpendicular to the ground, the vertical lines of a building will tend to converge (usually at the top) and define a vanishing point above the horizon line. In fact, your eyes do this, too, but our brains are adept at noticing that those lines are, in fact, parallel, so while we might see the convergence of the sides of the building, we recognize that it's not actually falling backwards.

Almost all professional architectural photographers use what's called a "tilt-shift" lens to counter the effects of pointing a camera up or down at a building. The lens barrel has a mechanism that allows for the internal elements to tilt, as well as shifting a few millimeters side-to-side. The whole lens also rotates so these other actions can be set at any angle.

If you've ever seen a view camera (the lens and focal plane are connected only by a flexible bellows), the tilt-shift lens works on the same principle, although in a more compact and portable mechanism.

Some editing software can also mimic the effects of a tilt-shift lens, removing the need for specialty lenses and allowing very precise control of how a building or its interior look in the final output.

I made this shot back in 2006 and was attempting to illustrate the visual distortions caused by pointing a camera up at a building and how to correct them. The first image was processed with no correction and you can easily see the convergence of the vertical lines. While it might seem trivial, that convergence disguises the true lines of the building, especially in the case of an Art Deco structure with lines that are other than horizontal and vertical.

This is the corrected shot with only a single vanishing point somewhere to the lower left. All the vertical and horizontal lines that are parallel to the focal plane are perfectly aligned to their respective edges of the photo. Now you can see exactly how the buildings were designed and built with true representation of the scale and angles. It's very clear that the other buildings in the lower left are square and not leaning to the right as in the shot above. If you look very carefully, you can see that the balconies of the main building actually project from the side of the building at an angle instead of being a constant depth across their width.

I have been using the VSCO app on my iPhone to capture RAW images and process them with the same app. The ability to capture RAW is a relatively new feature of iOS 10 and this app just updated for this feature a couple months ago. I love the results.

Sycamore leaves on my front porch in the early morning or late afternoon light.

Wow. Over two years since the last entry on this thread. This will not do.

Blowing Rocks Preserve in Jupiter, Florida. Not many people—even people who live on the east coast of Florida—know this place exists. The landscape here is different from anyplace in Florida and even most of the Atlantic coast of the US. To get these, I had to schedule my time to be here on a morning when sunrise coincided with low tide so I could get the sun on the faces of the rocks while they were exposed from the water. This day was the tail end of a trip to Miami, so I left there at 4AM to make it to Jupiter at the right time.

From that same trip to Miami....

Florida Bay from Flamingo at sunset, Everglades Nat'l Park. The mosquitoes here were intense. From the time I parked the rental car, I could hear them buzzing outside the windows. I was already coated with bug spray, but I had to slather on some more before I could get my gear out of the trunk. I swear those biting fuckers were drinking it from the nozzle of the can. I spent maybe five minutes planning and making some photos, then ran back to the safety of the vehicle and sped off. The bites wore off eventually, but the sound ... the sound.

Ancient Spanish Monastery Museum, North Miami Beach. Originally built starting in 1133 AD and completed eight years later in Sacramenia, Spain, this building and several outbuildings were purchased in 1925 by William Randolph Hearst. They were disassembled brick-by-brick and brought to America where they sat in a warehouse for 26 years. A year after Hearst's death, the remains were sold again and after 19 months of work, they were reassembled in their current location in south Florida. Today, the Church of St. Bernard de Clairvaux is an active congregation as well as a tourist exhibit.

MJ was riding her motorcycle when I met her. I was driving in the opposite direction and she was leaned over her bike at a red light, so I made a u-turn at the earliest opportunity and followed her (stalker alert!) into a shopping mall parking lot. I blocked— uh, stopped behind her and asked if she had ever done any modeling. She replied she had not done anything professionally, but was an active instagrammer and seemed interested in what I proposed. I gave her a card and she contacted me in a couple weeks to set up a shoot. It took a few months for our schedules to align, but we eventually did two photo shoots. The first was in a small warehouse:

Wow... She's beautiful and great shots!!

She is! Sadly, she stopped posting to Instagram and her other social media after she grew tired of all the disrespectful comments. Basically, a bunch of idiots ruined it for the rest of us. She's a nice person, though.
