North to the Future

Caribou Creek running into the Mat at Lion's Head. I've paddled this route. The Matanuska glacier in the background.

I like the yellow truck best, too. I love Alaska for the glaciated geography , the wildlife and the history. And the people. What surprised me the first time I went there was relics like that yellow truck that somehow persevere. Is it the cold storage and lack of road salt? My favorite was going to an outdoor tourist banquet dinner ( Fairbanks I think. I plead jet lag.)only to find an honest to God steam shovel with a boiler that had helped to dig the Panama Canal. Totally unexpected. Last place I would have looked for such a thing. Reminded me of a book Captain Kangaroo read called Mike Mulligan and Maryanne.

Okay, hard to choose my favorite Alaska experience. There are too many. But it was a total surprise.
